2016 NFL Week 17 Game Recaps

Chris Ransom Last Updated: January 1, 2017.

Baltimore Ravens 8-8-0
Cincinnati Bengals 6-9-1

Game Recap: CINCINNATI-Both of these teams are eliminated from the playoffs. Baltimore does not have Jimmy Smith. Cincinnati does not have A.J. Green or Tyler Eifert.

Cincinnati took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Baltimore kicked a field goal. Cincinnati led 14-3 after one quarter. Cincinnati led 20-3 at halftime. Dalton had a lot of success picking apart the Ravens without Jimmy Smith.

Baltimore had a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Breshad Perriman's touchdown got overturned. Kenneth Dixon had a rushing touchdown which made it a 20-10 game.

Rex Burkhead had two rushing touchdowns. Burkhead was the biggest reason the Bengals won.

Houston Texans 9-7-0
Tennessee Titans 9-7-0

Game Recap: TENNESSEE-Houston already locked up the 4 seed winning the AFC South last week. That made this game pretty meaningless.

Tennessee led 14-0 in this game. Tom Savage got injured and Matt Cassel played well in relief of Marcus Mariota. Tennessee took a 7-0 lead off a fumble recovery in the end zone. Matt Cassel threw a touchdown in the second quarter to make it 14-0. That was the score at halftime.

Brock Osweiler threw a touchdown. That made it 14-7. Derrick Henry had a rushing touchdown to make it a 21-7 lead. Nick Novak kicked a field goal. Tennessee led 21-10 after three quarters.

Ryan Succop kicked a field goal in the fourth quarter. Tennessee took a 24-10 lead.

Houston got another touchdown. Time ran out though. Rishard Matthews had 9 receptions, 113 receiving yards, and 1 receiving touchdown. Matthews was the biggest reason Tennessee won this meaningless game.

Carolina Panthers 6-10-0
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 9-7-0

Game Recap: TAMPA BAY-Tampa Bay needs a win and a lot of help to make the playoffs. Carolina got eliminated.

Roberto Aguayo kicked a field goal. Tampa Bay led 3-0 in the first quarter.

Jonathan Stewart had a 2-yard rushing touchdown following an interception by James Bradberry in the first quarter. Carolina led 7-3 after one quarter and Carolina led 7-3 at halftime as well.

Brent Grimes returned an interception for a touchdown in the third quarter. Tampa Bay led 10-7 after three quarters.

Graham Gano tied it in the fourth quarter. Mike Evans caught a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to give Tampa Bay a 17-10 lead.

Kelvin Benjamin got a touchdown. Ron Rivera went for a two point conversion and did not get it. Chip Kelly's two point conversion cost the 49ers Myles Garrett and Ron Rivera's two point conversion got the Carolina Panthers a top 10 pick.

Keith Tandy had 10 solo tackles, 10 total tackles, and 2 interceptions. Keith Tandy was without a doubt the player of this game at strong safety. Tandy played free safety at West Virginia too and is versaatile enough to be a nickel corner. Tandy has cemented a starting spot on Tampa Bay in 2017 with his brilliant play down the stretch.

Jacksonville Jaguars 3-13-0
Indianapolis Colts 8-8-0

Game Recap: INDIANAPOLIS-Doug Marone had a chance to solidify himself as Jacksonville's head coach with a win in Indianapolis. This was also the final game for Colts pass rusher Robert Mathis at 3-4 outside linebacker.

This was a pretty meaningless game. Jacksonville led for much of the game. Andrew Luck made his fair share of mistakes, but celebrated like a kid at Chuck E Cheese after throwing a game-winning touchdown in the Colts home finale against Jacksonville. Frank Gore became the oldest running back since John Riggins to have 1,000 rushing yards in a season at age 33. The last running back to reach 1,000 rushing yards before John Riggins at age 33 was Franco Harris. I'm not sure what happens to Chuck Pagano after the season, but the Colts won a pretty meaningless game 24-20.

New England Patriots 14-2-0
Miami Dolphins 10-6-0

Game Recap: MIAMI-New England could secure home field in the AFC with a win. Miami had a chance to play spoiler and improve their seeding with a win assuming the Kansas City Chiefs lost.

Tom Brady began the game with a 13 play 75-yard drive that took up 7 minutes and 32 seconds. That gave New England a 7-0 lead. During that drive Brady threw a 20 yard pass to Julian Edelman before firing a 2-yard touchdown pass to Martellus Bennett.

New England's defense held Miami to a 3 and out. On the Patriots next possession Tom Brady threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Michael Floyd on a very quick drive after LeGarrette Blount had a huge 19-yard run to set up a first down before Brady threw a touchdown pass to Michael Floyd.

Matt Moore threw an interception to Logan Ryan. New England ended the first quarter with a 14-0 lead. New England had the ball for 12 minutes and 25 seconds in the first quarter while Miami only had the ball for 2 minutes and 35 seconds in the first quarter.

New England got a field goal on the first play of the second quarter. New England led 17-0.

New England's defense made another stop with Matt Moore in for Ryan Tannehill. New England had a 15-play 82-yard drive that took up 8 minutes and 19 seconds in the second quarter. New England got a field goal on that drive and took a 20-0 lead.

Matt Moore threw a touchdown to Jarvis Landry with 28 seconds left in the first half. Tom Brady put New England in field goal position with such little time left. Stephen Gostkowski could not make a field goal as time ran out in the first half. New England led 20-7 at halftime.

Miami appeared to have momentum early in the second half. The Dolphins got a touchdown in the second half. The Dolphins took 6 minutes and 21 seconds off the clock in the second half. New England led 20-14 after Matt Moore threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stills.

Tom Brady threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Julian Edelman on third and seven in the third quarter. That made it a 27-14 game and to make matters worse for Miami Tony Lippett got injured on the play.

Both defenses regrouped in the third quarter. New England led 27-14 after three quarters. Devin McCourty forced a fumble in the fourth quarter. THat fumble put New England in scoring position where LeGarrette Blount would get a rushing touchdown to give New England a 33-14 lead. The Patriots went for two and got it to go ahead 35-14.

New England won 35-14 to clinch home field in the AFC. Miami secured the 6 seed and will head to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers in the wild card game.

Quarterback Tom Brady went 25/33 with 276 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. Wide receiver Julian Edelman had 8 receptions, 151 receiving yards, and 1 receiving touchdown. Both Brady and Edelman can make a convincing case to be player of the game. You could argue the same for Logan Ryan or Devin McCourty on defense.

Chicago Bears 3-13-0
Minnesota Vikings 8-8-0

Game Recap: MINNESOTA-Matt Barkley and Sam Bradford played a meaningless football game in Minnesota.

Matt Barkley threw 3 interceptions in this game and had 10 interceptions in the last three games. It's highly unlikely that Jay Cutler, Brian Hoyer, or Matt Barkley will be back as Chicago's quarterback. Sam Bradford completed the season with a 71.6 completion percentage breaking the 71.2 completion percentage Drew Brees set in 2011. Even though Bradford had such a high completion percentage he may not start next season if Teddy Bridgewater makes a smooth recovery. Chicago finishes 3-13 after losing to the Vikings while Minnesota finishes the season 8-8.

Buffalo Bills 7-9-0
New York Jets 5-11-0

Game Recap: NEW YORK-E.J. Manuel faced off against Ryan Fitzpatrick. The irony is both backups started with both the Bills 2013 first round pick and Ryan Fitzpatrick in contract years.

E.J. Manuel did so bad that Cardale Jones got inserted into the game. Ryan Fitzpatrick played turnover free football in what was likely his finale with the New York Jets. New York won 30-10.

Dallas Cowboys 13-3-0
Philadelphia Eagles 7-9-0

Game Recap: PHILADELPHIA-Dallas was going to play backup quarterbacks Tony Romo and Mark Sanchez in this game.

Tony Romo threw the only passing touchdown for Dallas in this game. Philadelphia won 27-13 thanks to tight end Zach Ertz who had 13 receptions, 139 receptions, and 2 receiving touchdowns.

Cleveland Browns 1-15-0
Pittsburgh Steelers 11-5-0

Game Recap: PITTSBURGH-Cleveland could lock up the first pick in the 2017 NFL Draft with a Pittsburgh victory. Pittsburgh secured the 3 seed last week with their win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Cleveland led this game 14-0. Pittsburgh did make it 14-7. Landry Jones threw a pick 6 which got called back. That helped Pittsburgh tie the game at 21 and send it into overtime. Cleveland had a chance to win in regulation, but fumbled the ball at the Pittsburgh five yard line as time ran out in regulation. Cleveland got the ball first, but only came away with a field goal. Pittsburgh won the game in overtime on a touchdown. Browns keep the #1 pick in the draft after Pittsburgh defeated Cleveland with their second team offense.

New Orleans Saints 7-9-0
Atlanta Falcons 11-5-0

Game Recap: ATLANTA-Atlanta could lock up a first round bye with a win. New Orleans had a chance to play spoiler.

Atlanta had the ball for 11 minutes and 37 seconds in the third quarter really doing a good job controlling the clock winning the time of possession battle.

New Orleans had 19-unanswered point sin the fourth quarter. Drew Brees rallied New Orleans back to make it 38-32. New Orleans failed to get the onside kick. Atlanta held on to the win 38-32.
