2018 NFL Combine: Day 4 Recap

Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Posted on: 3/5/2018.

Minkah Fitzpatrick is the top defensive back in the 2018 NFL Draft. He's versatile enough to play cornerback or safety.

Defensive Backs Combine Results

Iowa cornerback Josh Jackson is my favorite cornerback not named Minkah Fitzpatrick. He could be a top 10 pick.

Defensive Backs Combine Recap: The crazy thing is last year was a cornerback and safety group for the ages with the defensive backs. This years class may be even deeper at cornerback. Minkah Fitzpatrick is going to headline this class as a blue chip defensive back since he can play cornerback or safety.

You also got Iowa cornerback Josh Jackson as another blue chip cornerback. There are three blue chip safeties in my mind, Derwin James, DeShon Elliott, and Ronnie Harrison. After that there is a huge drop off in talent at defensive back.

From that point you have to decide if you want to draft based on speed of corners, draft based on a cornerbacks floor, or draft based on their potential. Jaire Alexander may not have the ceiling you want, but he has the speed and floor after entering the preseason as my top ranked cornerback. It won't be easy with these defensive backs, but you got 10 more defensive backs in this combine compared to the 2017 NFL Combine on day 4. Overall it's a very exciting group and I can't wait to see what happens.

The cornerbacks proceeded to turn their hips and go. Pretty much every cornerback in this class excelled in this drill. One cornerback who nearly tripped in this drill is Isaiah Oliver out of Colorado. Maybe balance is something you want to revisit when watching Oliver on tape. Oliver caught the ball in the zone coverage drill, but ran out of bounds desite finishing the play.

Donte Jackson and Josh Jackson looked outstanding in the zone coverage drill cementing their first round status as two of the top defensive backs behind Minkah Fitzpatrick. Both Donte and Josh Jackson did well in the man coverage drill too. Isaac Yiadom made an incredible one-handed interception in zone coverage.

A lot of cornerbacks did awesome in the man coverage drills. Even guys lie Danny Johnson and Duke Dawson who struggled in Mobile stepped up in these drills. Dawson struggled in the zone coverage drill as did Carlton Davis who dropped a pass.

My top three remains exactly the same with Minkah Fitzpatrick, Josh Jackson, and Donte Jackson being the top corners. The two cornerbacks that moved into my top five were Denzel Ward and Jaire Alexander. I now have a late first on Denzel Ward even though I also feel like he will get over drafted. Holton Hill and Isaiah Oliver are still guys with the ceiling to be Pro Bowl cornerbacks, but I feel like they are day 2 guys worth taking in the second round. The one cornerback that moved out of that Pro Bowl range that I project for cornerbacks was Mike Hughes out of Central Florida. Hughes dropped some balls in coverage plus coming in at 5-10 instead of 5-11 makes you wonder if he's a nickel corner. He didn't do anything to answer questions about his character either so I have a third round grade on Hughes now.

Dane Cruikshank did well in zone coverage. Minkah Fitzpatrick also aced this drill. Northwestern free safety Godwin Igwebuike did well in zone coverage and dominated today with a fast 40 time. Godwin showed the versatility to play both strong safety and free safety.

Derwin James separated himself from the other safeties today. DeShon Elliot and Ronnie Harrison are still guys capable of becoming Pro Bowl safeties. I don't see them as the blue chip safeties I once did. You also got Kyzir White out of West Virginia and Justin Reid out of Stanford rounding out my top five still. Dane Cruikshank and Troy Apke were not in my top 300 on my draft game, but now I feel the need to go back and watch their tape because they impressed and balled out at the 2018 NFL Combine.
