2016-2017 Bowl Games Recap

Baker Mayfield Leads Oklahoma To A Sugar Bowl Win

Posted By Chris Ransom on 1/2/2017

Auburn gave Oklahoma problems early. Baker Mayfield kept his composure under pressure and rallied Oklahoma to a win. Once the Sooners gained the lead in this game they never looked back.

USC Rallies Back Against Penn State

Posted By Chris Ransom on 1/2/2017

Penn State led 49-35 at one point in the fourth quarter. Sam Darnold led USC to a huge comeback winning 52-49 in the final seconds. Mcsorley threw an interception at the wrong timg. That put USC in position to get the game-winning field goal.

Wisconsin Ruins Western Michigan's Unbeaten Season

Posted By Chris Ransom on 1/2/2017

Wisconsin defeated Western Michigan 24-16. Wisconsin wasn't spectacular on offense, but the defense did just enough to win this game. Corey Clement is probably the top prospect on Wisconsin's offense.

Florida Crushes Iowa

Posted By Chris Ransom on 1/2/2017

This game started out close fairly early. Iowa cornerback Desmond King made a huge interception early.

King also gave up a missed tackle on a run and a touchdown on a pass by missing a tackle. King is moving down in my cornerback rankings. Teez Tabor really stepped up today. Tabor dominated in coverage and should be one of the first two cornerbacks drafted in the 2017 NFL Draft. Florida manhandled Iowa 30-3 thanks to Tabor's outstanding ability in coverage. Quincy Wilson is more consistent against the run compared to Desmond King so both Florida corners should move ahead of Desmond King.

Georgia Tech Wins Tax Slayer Bowl

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/31/2016

Georgia Tech defeated Kentucky 33-18. The concerts after the bowl game were almost more exciting than the actual Bowl game itself.

LSU Frustrates Louisville

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/31/2016

LSU defeated Louisville 29-9. LSU did a great job shutting down Lamar Jackson thanks to strong safety Jamal Adams. Adams has easily cemented himself as the top safety in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Dalvin Cook Runs Wild

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/30/2016

Dalvin Cook had 20 carries, 145 rushing yards, and 1 rushing touchdown. Cook ran wild and had a field day with Jabrill Peppers injured. Florida State won a nail biter 33-32. This was arguably my favorite bowl game outside of the playoff games so I'm not one bit surprised that this bowl game came down to the wire.

Air Force Blows Out South Alabama

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/30/2015

Air Force destroyed South Alabama 45-21. This may have been the worst bowl game all bowl season.

Tennessee Destroys Nebraska In Music City Bowl

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/30/2016

Tennessee defeated Nebraska 38-24 in the Music City Bowl. Derek Barnett had 4 quarterback hurries, 1 sack, 1 tackle for a loss, and 2 deflections from pass breakups. Barnett ended his junior season with 19 tackles for a loss, 16 quarterback hurries, 13 sacks, and 5 deflections from pass breakups.

Stanford Edges North Carolina

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/30/2016

Solomon Thomas did an awesome job pressuring Mitch Trubisky who many believe is the top quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft. Trubisky had 2 touchdowns, 280 passing yards, and 2 interceptions. Trubisky got sacked twice in the loss and Thomas had an excellent finale for Stanford with Stanford winning 25-23 sacking Trubisky on a game-tying two point conversion.

Nick Chubb Runs Over TCU

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/30/2016

Georgia defeated TCU 31-23. Nick Chubb had 17 carries, 142 carries, and 1 rushing touchdown. Chubb did an awesome job running the football. Chubb will be back for his senior season in 2017.

Mason Rudolph Puts Up A Clinic

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/29/2016

Oklahoma State embarrassed Colorado 38-8. Mason Rudolph picked apart Colorado cornerback Chidobe Awuzie on tape. Awuzie looks like a fourth round pick after watching Rudolph pick him apart on tape. Wide receiver James Washington could be a 2018 first round pick. The junior redshirt is returning for his senior season in 2017.

Virginia Tech Rallies Back In 2016 Belk Bowl

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/29/2016

Arkansas led the Belk Bowl 24-0 at halftime. Quarterback Jerod Evans had 2 passing touchdowns and 2 rushing touchdowns in the second half to rally Virginia Tech back in a 35-24 win.

South Florida Wins Shootout

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/29/2016

South Florida defeated South Carolina 46-39. South Florida won an offensive shootout.

Kansas State Upsets Texas A&M

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/28/2016

Kansas State defeated Texas A&M 33-28. The Cleveland Browns were on hand to see Myles Garrett. Garrett had only one tackle in the entire game while Kansas State came away with a narrow victory.

Joe Williams Runs Wild

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/28/2016

Utah running back Joe WIlliams dominated on the ground. Williams had 26 carries, 222 rushing yards, and 1 rushing touchdown.

Brad Kaaya Picks Apart West Virginia

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/28/2016

Brad Kaaya began this game 5/13. Kaaya dominated afterwards in the second quarter finishing 24/34 with 282 passing yards, 4 passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. Kaaya had a huge bowl game and should declare for the 2017 NFL Draft after finishing 2016 with 3,532 passing yards, 27 passing touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.

Northwestern Edges Pittsburgh

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/28/2016

Northwestern defeated Pittsburgh 31-24. The biggest reason Northwestern won is due to Justin Jackson running the football. Jackson may be a day 2 pick if he declares for the 2017 NFL Draft. For Pittsburgh quarterback Nate Peterman, running back James Conner, and left guard Dorian Johnson all left this game injured.

K.D. Cannon Destroys Boise State In Cactus Bowl

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/27/2016

Balor wide receiver K.D. Cannon went off in this game with 14 receptions, 226 receiving yards, and 2 receiving touchdowns. Boise State has a weak secondary that Cannon exploited. K.D. Cannon would have been a 2018 first round pick, but he declared for the 2017 NFL Draft after playing the Cactus Bowl in honor of forme rhead coach Art Briles.

Minnesota Defeats Washington State To Win Holliday Bowl

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/27/2016

Minnesota defeated Washington State 17-12 thanks to Mitch Leidner who went 11/20 with 129 passing yards, 1 passing touchdown, and no interceptions. Leinder is likely a sixth or seventh round pick. Luke Falk is returning to school for his senior season.

Army Defeats North Texas

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/27/2016

Army defeated North Texas 38-31. Army quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw is a junior redshirt and reminds me of Keenan Reynolds. Bradshaw should be a late round quarterback prospect in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Brad Watson Stops Temple

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/27/2016

Wake Forest defeated Temple 34-26. Brad Watson dominated at cornerback with 7 solo tackles and 1 deflection for a pass breakup. Watson showed his athleticism and jumping in this game when swatting a pass which is something I wanted to see him do more during the regular season. Watson is a third round prospect at the moment and could be a good pick late in day 2 of the 2017 NFL Draft.

North Carolina State Crushes Vanderbilt

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/26/2016

North Carolina State crushed Vanderbilt 51-17. North Carolina State's tight end had a huge day. Also middle linebacker Zach Cunningham got exposed in this game. Cunningham had 3 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles, and 6 total tackles on the day. Reuben Foster should surpass Cunningham as the top middle linebacker at some point even though Cunningham finished 2016 with 125 total tackles.

Boston College Edges Out Maryland

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/26/2016

Boston College faced former ACC foe Maryland in a bowl game between Big 10 squad Maryland and Boston College who is still a member of the ACC. Patrick Towles did just enough for Boston College to edge out Maryland 36-30.

Nick Fitzgerald Steps Up

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/26/2016

Nick Fitzgerald faced Miami Ohio in todays 2016 St. Petersburg bowl. His predecessor Dak Prescott plays for the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football coincidentally. Nick Fitzgerald had 2 rushing touchdowns and led Mississippi State in rushing yards. Fitzgerald's duel threat ability is a huge reason why Mississippi State defeated Miami Ohio, but the blocked field goal which kept Miami Ohio from gaining the lead as time ran out was another huge reason why Mississippi State won. Right tackle Justin Senior had a good game for Mississippi State as well.

Hawaii Rolls Past Middle Tennessee State

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/24/2016

Hawaii defeated Middle Tennessee State 52-35. Dru Brown picked apart Middle Tennessee State cornerback Jeremy Cutrer. Cutrer is going to the East West Shrine Game instead of the Senior Bowl in Mobile. Cutrer may fall to day 3 now even though I really like his tape.

Trojan Men

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/23/2016

The Troy Trojans defeated the Ohio Bobcats 28-23. Left tackle Antonio Garcia made excellent plays most of the game. He wasn't flawless though. Garcia gave up a quarterback hurry that resulted in an Ohio interception when Troy took a lead in the first quarter. Other than that one play Garcia was fabulous. We need to see how Garcia does in the East West Shrine game and in Mobile before we assess him any further.

Trent Taylor Goes Wild In Armed Forces Bowl

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/23/2016

Louisiana Tech wide receiver Trent Taylor was the biggest reason Louisiana Tech defeated Navy. Trent Taylor had 12 receptions, 238 receiving yards, and 2 receiving touchdowns in Louisiana Tech's 48-45 win over Navy. Some believe Taylor has NFL talent, but being 5-8 178 lbs is a huge size disadvantage. Regardless, Taylor played lights out against Navy.

Old Dominion Wins With Dominant First Half

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/23/2016

Old Dominion held Eastern Michigan to a goose egg in the first half. That allowed the Old Dominion Monarchs to pull out a 24-20 win in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl. And yes the Monarchs ate Popeyes after winning the bowl game.

Idaho Captures Potato Bowl

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/22/2016

Idaho won a 61-50 Idaho Potato Bowl over Colorado State. This was one of the bigger upsets and so far the highest scoring bowl game. Idaho is expected to be demoted to the FCS in 2018 so this was a huge bowl win for them.

Kai Nacua's Clutch Interception

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/22/2016

BYU defeated Wyoming 24-21 thanks to the clutch interception of Kai Nacua. Kai Nacua is a 6-5 215 lb strong safety on the BYU Cougars. He's versatile enough to play both strong safety and free safety, but is better at strong safety where he relies on his zone coverage to make plays. Nacua played Basketball and Volleyball besides football so he has the skill set to be a successful NFL safety. I don't have Nacua in my mock yet, but Tony Mario was wise to add Nacua to his mock.

Run Forrest Run

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/20/2016

Western Kentucky torched Memphis 51-31 thanks the flawless blocking and receiving by left tackle Forrest Lamp. The 6-3 300 lb left tackle already accepted an invite to Mobile.

Lamp is projected to play left guard in the NFL. I think Lamp has the versatility to play tight end, left tackle, or left guard in the NFL after seeing him on tape tonight. Lamp has the tools to be a complete tackle on tape. I want to see what he does in Mobile before moving him up on my draft boards.

A Tale Of Two Quarterbacks

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/19/2016

Two senior quarterbacks entered this game. Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rush and Tulsa quarterback Dane Evans.

Rush had a realistic shot of getting drafted while Evans didn't. Today Evans put together his best career game going 28/38 with 304 passing yards, 5 passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. Cooper Rush went 24/49 with 241 passing yards, no passing touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.

Tulsa won 55-10. Dane Evans really delivered today, but both quarterbacks have been too inconsistent on tape throughout the year to get drafted.

Southern Miss Wins New Orleans Bowl

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/18/2016

The New Orleans Bowl featured NFL Prospects in Southern Miss quarterback Nick Mullens and center Cameron Tom. Elijah McGuire was the one NFL prospect on Louisiana Lafayette.

Nick Mullens went 25/40 with 346 passing yards, 2 passing touchdowns, and 1 interception. Mullens was easily the MVP in Southern Miss's Bowl win over Louisiana Lafayette.

Arkansas State Beats Central Florida

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/17/2016

Arkansas State handled Central Florida with quite ease. Kendall Sanders had 5 receptions, 127 receiving yards, and 3 receiving touchdowns against Central Florida in Arkansas State's 31-13 win over Central Florida. Left tackle Jemar Clark did a great job on tape and may warrant an invite to the 2017 East West Shrine Game. I doubt Clark gets a Senior Bowl Invite at this point.

Appalachian State Delivers Win VS Toledo

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/17/2016

Ohio led Appalachian State 24-7 after 3 quarters. Appalachian State outscored Ohio 24-5 in the fourth quarter to win 31-29.

That was in 2015. This year Appalachian State faced Toledo in the 2016 Camellia Bowl.

This game was tied after each of the first three quarters. A field goal by Appalachian State helped them win 31-28. Running back Marcus Cox had 22 carries, 143 rushing yards, and 1 rushing touchdown. Cox did a great job running the football on Toledo's defense.

San Diego State Runs Over Houston

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/17/2016

Houston led 10-0 after one quarter. Houston would not score the rest of the game after that.

Houston led 14-6 at halftime. San Diego State hoped to score a touchdown in the second half.

San Diego State won thanks to Donnel Pumphrey having 19 carries, 115 rushing yards, and 1 rushing touchdown. Pumphrey had negative rushing yards in the first quarter, but finished strong. San Diego State won this Bowl game 34-10. San Diego State had 4 interceptions in the second half.

New Mexico Redeems Themselves In New Mexico Bowl

Posted By Chris Ransom on 12/17/2016

New Mexico faced UTSA University of Texas San Antonio after getting crushed by Arizona in the 2015 New Mexico Bowl. I.B. Brown a 5-11 185 lb cornerback made a critical deflection on third down which forced UTSA to settle for a field goal.

New Mexico led 7-3 after one quarter. New Mexico did a good job turning things around. New Mexico hit a 52-yard field goal to lead 10-6 at halftime.

New Mexico expanded their lead in the third quarter. New Mexico led 16-6 after three quarters.

UTSA made it close by outscoring New Mexico in the fourth quarter. The Lobos still ended up winning 23-20.

Quarterback Lamar Jordan showed why he can be a duel threat as a junior with 77 passing yards and 81 rushing yards leading New Mexico in both passing yards and rushing yards. Middle linebacker Dakota Cox had 6 solo tackles, 4 assisted tackles, 10 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss, and 1 deflection from a pass breakup. Cox struggled on a few passing plays in the game, but did enough on tape to warrant a day 3 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft with Cox graduating this year.
