This makes Trevor Lawrence the seventeenth different starting quarteback to win player of the game.

Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals and Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers both have job security from their current contracts. Both of them got paid. You can argue that Sam Darnold is in this category too despite his inconsistency this season on the Seattle Seahawks. C.J. Stroud won a playoff game in his rookie and sophomore seasons with the Houston Texans despite a down year in year three. Houston will pay C.J. Stroud, but if he takes too much money, desiring to be the NFL's highest paid quarterback, Houston will have to let talent walk to stay under the NFL's salary cap.

That leaves nine teams either in quarterback pergatory or in the market for a quarterback entering next season. The Tennessee Titans and New York Giants will continue to develop their first round rookie quarterbacks Cam Ward and Jaxson Dart hoping for improvement from both in year two. Cleveland can wait until 2027 to take their quarterback if they do not believe a quarterback in 2026 has more upside than Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders remaining in quarterback pergatory. Minnesota can do the same if they believe J.J. McCarthy's sample size as a starter is too small despite McCarthy becoming an actual NFL meme and playing historically bad in limited action, but I believe Minnesota brings in a veteran like Mac Jones to compete with McCarthy allowing Minnesota to delay drafting another quarterback in 2026. New Orleans can do the same too wth quarterbacks on rookie deals like Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler. Atlanta has both Michael Penix Jr. on a rookie deal and Kirk Cousins in year two of his four year contract with Penix recovering from a torn ACL while Cousins will be the only healthy quarterback on Atlanta for most of next season possibly all season in 2026, plus Atlanta traded their 2026 first round pick to the Los Angeles Rams. Arizona has both Kyler Murray and Jacoby Brissett under contract for next year, they cannot buyout Murray, but can trade him if a team wants to take on his salary. Indianapolis can pay Daniel Jones his market value of $54 million dollars or use a fifth year tender on backup Anthony Richardson, who was drafted fourth overall in 2023, so I'm putting the Colts in pergatory as well. Sure, the Colts could pay Daniel Jones, but Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman Jr. and Quinton Nelson all enter contract years in 2026 paying them when you have $145 million in cap space for 2027 needs to be prioritized before you decide whether to make a financial investment on quarterback Daniel Jones whose been in a career year for most of this season. Las Vegas can keep Geno Smith or cut him to save $8 million making them a wild card as to whether they stay in quarterback pergatory or try to fix their quarterback problem now.

That leaves two teams that will need a quarterback in 2026. Those two teams are the New York Jets who benched Justin Fields for Tyrod Taylor and the Pittsburgh Steelers if Aaron Rodgers retires. If Rodgers comes back next season, Pittsburgh gets upgraded to quarterback pergatory. Also the 2026 NFL Draft is historically bad as Miami FL Carson Beck is my only quarterback with Pro Bowl upside with a first round grade. Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza could be a very good starter, but in terms of upside I see Ryan Tannehill with a much weaker arm. A good high end starter like Matt Schaub or Ryan Tannehill, but not a guy who makes the Pro Bowl consistently.
