Chris Ransom grades the Chicago Bears 2015 NFL Draft. Do the Bears have a bright future after drafting Kevin White with the seventh pick in the draft?
7. Kevin White, WR, West Virginia A+ Grade
Chicago would have gotten an A+ grade for taking either wide receiver Kevin White or 3-down nose tackle Danny Shelton. Chicago went with White hoping to boost the receiving core. White had an awesome 2014 season at West Virginia where White had 109 receptions, 1,447 receiving yards, and 10 receiving touchdowns.
White ran a 4.35 40 time at 6-3 215 lbs. Kevin White is a better overall blocker than Amari Cooper. There were questions about his route running, but he corrected this one weakness at West Virginia's Pro Day and looks like a pretty complete receiver outside of Amari Cooper.
Chicago is lucky to find a replacement for Brandon Marshall. He should make an immediate impact next to Alshon Jeffery in Chicago.
39. Eddie Goldman, NT, Florida State A+ Grade
Eddie Goldman is a first round talent. Chicago gets another starter in the second round. Goldman may have been a 4-3 defensive tackle at Florida State, but he weighs 6-4 320 lbs, and is a better fit for a 3-4 at nose tackle. There were some plays where Florida State ran 3-4 plays so Goldman has some experience in the 3-4 at nose tackle.
This is easily another A+ grade. Call me crazy, but Chicago could end up with two Pro Bowlers in the first two rounds of the 2015 NFL Draft with Kevin White and Eddie Goldman.
71. Hroniss Grasu, C, Oregon A+Grade
Another smart pick. Hroniss Grasu may have had durability issues at Oregon, but when healthy, he is hands down the best pass blocking center in the entire 2015 NFL Draft.
Chicago usually gets run blocking offensive linemen. This time, they got a pass blocker at center to ensure Jay Cutler's protection. Grasu called a ton of blocking schemes and communicated plays with the other Oregon offensive lineman. Chicago needed an infectious presence in the trenches on their interior offensive line.
Grasu will be the third rookie on the Chicago Bears to start in week 1. Way to keep acing these picks Chicago.
106. Jeremy Langford, RB, Michigan State A Grade
I originally gave this pick an A- grade. When you consider that Langford provided incredible value along with the fact that Langford is already the #2 running back on the depth chart you have to make this an A grade.
Matt Forte is in a contract year. Forte will turn 30 next season, and may want out of Chicago if the Bears miss the 2016 NFL Playoffs. I feel pretty confident that Langford could take over for Forte right now. At the same time, it would be smart for Langford to sit out his rookie year behind Forte until his time to start at running back arrives.
I think Langford will start by 2016 next season. There's no way the Bears take Langford at this point in the fourth round unless Chicago believes Michigan State's running back can succeed Matt Forte with the Bears the same way he succeeded Le'Veon Bell at Michigan State as the Spartans starting running back.
142. Adrian Amos, SS, Penn State A Grade
Adrian Amos has the versatility to play either safety spot. The Bears needed an upgrade at both safety spots.
Right now Amos is a second string strong safety as a backup to Ryan Mundy who was once a backup free safety with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Amos is talented enough to beat out Mundy for a safety job. Amos might not start right away in Chicago, but the Bears will start him at some point before the 2015 season ends. Excellent pick by the Chicago Bears.
I previously gave Amos a B grade before bumping this pick up to an A grade. USA Today had Amos as a top 5 safety in their draft guide, plus Amos is an upgrade at strong safety over Ryan Mundy so you cannot fault Chicago for taking Amos at this point in the fifth round.
183. Tayo Fabuluje, LT, TCU A- Grade
Tayo Fabuluje is a third string left tackle on the Bears depth chart. I gave Chicago an A- grade before finding this out. I thought Fabaluje would have to move from left tackle to right tackle and transition to a new position completely. Fabuluje won't have to do that yet, so I'll keep the A- grade up for now.
Chicago Bears Team Grade: A+ Grade
Chicago had an awesome 2015 NFL Draft. The Bears still need to address left guard, center, right tackle, quarterback, and 4 linebackers for their 3-4 defense.
The Bears got a good amount of long term building blocks for a rebuilding franchise. I think Kevin White can get over 1,000 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns as a rookie. If White struggles to achieve this, it's not his fault since Jay Cutler is the most overpaid quarterback in the NFL.
Jay Cutler is going to get one more shot at quarterback with Jimmy Clausen as a backup and 2014 draft pick David Fales retaining his third string role. With guys like Kevin White and Hroniss Grasu starting at wide receiver and center, there's no excuse if Cutler screws up. I think that will be too much pressure for Cutler, but White could guide Chicago to a playoff appearance in the future if the Bears get good quarterback play and if White can stay clean off the field.
Chicago and Oakland both had two of the best drafts in 2015. How Amari Cooper and Kevin White's careers play out in the NFL will determine which team made the better picks in 3 years from now.
