2014 NFL Week 8 Game Recaps

San Diego Chargers 5-3-0
Denver Broncos 6-1-0

Game Recap: DENVER-The Thursday Night matchup in week 8 between the top 2 quarterbacks in the NFL took place. Philip Rivers and Peyton Manning both had the best touchdown to Interception ratios. Manning’s 19 TDs/3 INTs ratio bested Rivers 17 TDs/ 3 INTs. Rivers was ranked third in the NFL in passing yards behind Matt Ryan and Andrew Luck while Manning had the best yards per pass attempt in the entire NFL with 8.5 yards per throw. Many fans wondered which quarterback would triumph.

Both teams began the game well defensively. You saw early stops as both defenses anticipated how the quarterbacks would throw. For the first ten minutes of the first quarter you saw a cat and mouse game where you knew Manning or Rivers would throw. You did’nt know who they would throw to. Both defenses reacted properly on the first series for each team.

Near the end of the first quarter Emmanuel Sanders had three game-changing receptions which ignited the Broncos’ offense. First he caught a 38-yard pass which put the Broncos in field goal range. After that, Sanders recorded a first down on 2nd and 3. HIs best play came on a third down situation where he caught a touchdown where Peyton Manning decided to throw on the run.

Denver gave the Chargers offensive line some issues. Philip Rivers highlighted his frustration by continuously yelling at teammates on and off the gridiron. You saw Rivers bark at backups on the sidelines and you knew he was pissed off about trailing his arch rival Manning. Wide receiver Keenan Allen finally cheered Rivers up when he caught his first receiving touchdown in 2014. What is even more amazing is that Allen caught two receiving touchdowns against the Broncos in the 2014 NFL Playoffs, and went 7 regular season games without catching a receiving touchdown. Allen has to remain this proactive at wide receiver in the Chargers’ offense if Rivers hopes to win a championship.

Following the touchdown, Andre Caldwell fumbled the ball on a kickoff, but the officials later ruled him down due to his forearm hitting the ground.

Sanders ended the first half with another epic touchdown. Sanders executed his second receiving touchdown on third down once again after making a remarkable catch when lining up for a short pass on 3rd and goal. His previous touchdown involved route running on a short yardage situation. The touchdown near the end of the first half was a play where Sanders outran cornerback Shareece Wright.

The most controversial play int the game came following the touchdown the tied the game at 7. San Diego Following the touchdown, San Diego recovered a fumble, but the officials reversed the call. The officials were biased towards Denver in the first half. It continued until a Malik Jackson unnecessary roughness penalty following an interception. To make matters worse the Chargers were called for unsportsmanlike conduct which basically made Jackson’s penalty obsolete. After that Ronnie Hillman caught a touchdown on a counter route to put the Broncos up 21 to 7 before Hillman was ruled out of bounds. Then Emmanuel Sanders caught a third consecutive touchdown.

After Sanders gave the Broncos a two score lead we saw a game of tug a war between San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates and Denver Broncos running back Juwan Thompson. The Kent State veteran and the Duke rookie scored meaningless touchdowns in the second half after Emmanuel Sanders sealed the Chargers faith.

It was not just the tug of war. When Manning guided the Broncos to a 35-14 lead fans witnessed the same Peyton Manning Nationwide commercial for the 50,000th damn time. As Denver was running up the score I got so upset that I began making my own Nationwide commercial during the commercials for by improvising Nationwide.

Screw you San Diego. Omaha set dinosaur. Fat Albert The Florida Gator Can Suck Smokey’s balls. Rocky Top Tennessee. Eli is adopted. Jim Haslett is Archie Manning’s real dad. Nationwide is on your side. Sorry, but I’m not sorry that Nationwide’s commercials are that repetitive.

In addition to the Nationwide commercials you also had some excessive touchdown celebrations that were cheesy in the best way. The Keep away touchdown Denver did as a team. Emmanuel Sanders giving Coach Fox a high five. These were wholesome celebrations unlike the NBA Slam Dunk touchdown celebration with Jimmy Graham of the spike by Rob Gronkowski.

After Gates scored again this game lost all excitement. San Diego called their final timeout with 2 minutes and 34 seconds left. Emmanuel Sanders finished the day with 9 receptions, 120 receiving yards, and 3 receiving touchdowns. Peyton Manning did well too going 25 for 35 with 286 passing yards. Manning threw all 3 of his touchdowns to Sanders. This was a week where the wide receiver had just as big of an impact if not a bigger impact on the game then the quarterback. Great team win by Denver.

Detroit Lions 6-2-0
Atlanta Falcons 2-6-0

Game Recap: LONDON-Detroit ruled running back Reggie Bush and wide receiver Calvin Johnson before the game. Atlanta ruled left tackle Jake Matthews as active before the game. Starting Matthews at the last seconds is a huge shift after losing Sam Baker and Peter Konz.

Matt Ryan began this game with a bang going 9 for 10 with 104 passing yards, 2 passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. Having Jake Matthews back at left tackle gave the Falcons a lot more confidence. Detroit did not expect Matthews back and probably expected a cakewalk win without either offensive tackle. Ryan threw 5 more completions and finished the first half 14 for 17 with 160 passing yards.

Ryan nearly threw pick, but a Detroit Lions penalty negated a pick 6. Steven Jackson ran for a 1 yard rushing touchdown to give the Falcons a 21-0 lead. Detroit looked lost in this first half.

At the end of the first half right tackle Gabe Carimi left the game with the injury. That left defensive end Ziggy Ansah facing the overrated Lamar Holmes. Ansah has Holmes number.

Detroit turned the corner in the second half. A 7 minute drive resulted in a field goal. After holding the Falcons to a 3 and out, Matthew Stafford threw a 59 yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate which made it 21-10. Detroit intercepted Matt Ryan and returned it to the Atlanta 5 yard line for a 1st and goal situation. Atlanta maintained an 11 point lead after 3 quarters.

Atlanta held Detroit to a field goal early in the 4th quarter. Detroit threw a touchdown following the field goal. The Lions were denied a two point conversion.

Detroit gets a false start when a kick was no good and then they kicked a field goal and now it is good. Lions win 22-21.

Minnesota Vikings 3-5-0
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1-6-0

Game Recap: TAMPA BAY-Gerald McCoy got a record-breaking $98 million dollar contract this weekend making him the highest paid defensive tackle in NFL history. Teddy Bridgewater has to have a big game where he throws more touchdowns than interceptions. Tampa Bay’s defensive line combined for 8 sacks on the year, ranks 25th in run defense, and 31st in pass defense. There was no excuse for Bridgewater having a bad game when you look at all of those statistics.

Neither team scored in the first quarter. This surprised me when you considered that Tampa Bay had one of the leagues worst overall defenses.

The only score in the first half was a Blair Walsh field goal. Teddy Bridgewater went 13 for 18 with 101 passing yards. Mike Glennon went 6 for 12 in the first half with 0 touchdowns and 1 interception.

One of my friends was pissed off about Greg Jennings having only 1 reception for 11 receiving yards in the first half. Vincent Jackson did not do anything for Tampa Bay in the first half so calm down. More people have Jackson starting in their leagues.

Jennings caught another reception which was a 17 yard receiving touchdown. That put the Vikings up 10-0.

Vikings maintained their 10-0 lead until the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay got two field goals in regulation. Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins got a go ahead touchdown before kicker Blair Walsh tied this game.

Overtime Mike Glennon throws a pass to Austin Seferian-Jenkins. The pass is fumbled and recovered by right outside linebacker Anthony Barr. The rookie out of UCLA recovers a fumble for a touchdown and the Vikings win. 19 to 13 in overtime. Teddy Bridgewater finishes the day 24 for 42 with 241 passing yards, 1 passing touchdown, and 0 interceptions. The Vikings first round picks from the 2014 NFL Draft get the job done.

Buffalo Bills 5-3-0
New York Jets 1-7-0

Game Recap: NEW YORK-Buffalo will have Kyle Orton at quarterback. How would he do without C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson at running back. Having Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown in the backfield will make things more interesting. The Jets offense will feature Percy Harvin and Eric Decker for the first time. How would Geno Smith do in year 2 with 2 competent wide receivers?

Geno Smith threw 2 completions and 3 interceptions in the first quarter. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore, middle linebacker Preston Brown, and free safety Aaron Williams all picked off Smith. I despite Michael Vick for what he did to dogs, but if Geno Smith is going to throw 3 interceptions in the first quarter than Geno has no business starting. Smith finished the day with an astounding 5 passing yards.

Buffalo took a 14-0 lead thanks 2 passing touchdowns by Kyle Orton. How did Orton start so well while Geno Smith started so horrible? That is a mystery that baffles me. Orton finished the day throwing 2 more touchdowns.

Geno Smith got pulled and ended up with a -3.35 points in most fantasy football leagues. With Michael Vick starting, it is pretty evident that the Jets have to sign Brian Hoyer or add a quarterback in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Michael Vick did better leading the team downfield before running back Chris Ivory ran it in for a touchdown. While Vick looks better than Geno, he is not the long-term starter.

Vick began the game 6 for 13. If it is any consolation Kyle Orton began the game 6 for 12 after throwing both touchdowns.

The Jets gained some momentum with a Chris Ivory rushing touchdown and a field goal. Bills led 24 to 17 at halftime.

Kyle Orton is better than the Jets quarterbacks. Still not ready to say he isn’t overrated. Orton is on a really good Bills team. I will say Orton is average now.

Buffalo wins 43 to 23. New York Jets are now 1-7 on the season.

Chicago Bears 3-5-0
New England Patriots 6-2-0

Game Recap: NEW ENGLAND-Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall threw Jay Cutler under the bus last week. Cornerback Brandon Browner will make his first career start for the Patriots this week in week 8.

New England did an excellent job in coverage on the first series. Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner successfully locked down Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery on the first series.

The Patriots had some big plays on their opening possession. They began with Tom Brady throwing a 19 yard reception to wide receiver Brandon LaFell. Then Brady threw a 6 yard touchdown to Rob Gronkowski.

One player who surprised today was former Notre Dame running back Jonas Gray. Gray ran for 46 rushing yards on 7 carries.

New England had the ball for 7 minutes and 5 seconds following a second failed scoring chance by the Bears. Patriots led 7-0 after 1 quarter.

In the second quarter, Chicago held them in check on third down. Patriots committed a false start on a failed 4th and goal attempt. Patriots ate more clock and settled for a field goal.

New England stopped the Chicago Bears once again. The New England Patriots offensive line looked awesome early thanks to the return of left guard Dan Connolly.

Brady with a completion to Rob Gronkowski. Gronkowski down at the 1 yard line. Tim Wright with a touchdown and that puts the Patriots up 17-0.

New England had a pick by free safety Devin McCourty. An illegal contact play by Brandon Browner gave the Bears the ball back. Cutler threw a 25 yard passing touchdown to Matt Forte. Not only did the Patriots keep themselves from gaining a 20-0 or 24-0 lead with that penalty, they also allowed a touchdown following the penalty.

Rob Gronkowski with his second touchdown. Gronkowski delivers after 10 play 80 yard drive that took up 3 minutes 40 seconds.

Tom Brady threw a fourth touchdown to Brandon LaFell. New England scored 4 touchdowns and a field goal on 5 possessions in the first half.

New England would score again on a fumble recovery. That was the Patriots third touchdown in 57 seconds.

Jay Cutler ended the first half throwing a hail mary that resulted in a Darrelle Revis pick. Chicago allowed 38 points in the first half against the Patriots. That is the most in Chicago Bears history.

Tom Brady threw another touchdown to Rob Gronkowski. Gronkowski caught 9 receptions, ran for 149 receiving yards, and scored 3 receiving touchdowns. New England went ahead 45 to 7.

New England Patriots school Chicago. Patriots win 51 to 23.

Seattle Seahawks 4-3-0
Carolina Panthers 3-4-1

Game Recap: CAROLINA-The Panthers host the Seahawks. Both teams need this win after a 12-7 Seahawks victory back in 2013.

Carolina began the game scoring two consecutive field goals. One in each quarter. Seattle followed that up with a field goal.

Carolina led 6 to 3 at halftime. The Seahawks tied the game at 6 in the third quarter.

Carolina took a lead with a field goal that put the Panthers up 9-6. Russell Wilson threw a touchdown to Luke Wilson. Yes that Luke Wilson from Old School. Seahawks win in old school fashion with a game winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Seahawks won 13 to 9. Carolina loses by one less point and scores two more points. Seahawks are 4-3 and the Panthers are 3-4-1.

Miami Dolphins 4-3-0
Jacksonville Jaguars 1-7-0

Game Recap: JACKSONVILLE-Miami and Jacksonville meet in Jacksonville. The Dolphins and Jaguars dueled on Sunday in the Sunshine State known as Florida.

Jacksonville got off to a rough start. Free safety Louis Delmas caught a pick six from Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles. Kicker Josh Scobee missed two field goals in the first half. The most hilarious statistic is that the Jaguars led 10 to 0 in first downs despite trailing early.

After that each team had 4 first downs as the teams exchanged field goals with Scobee finally kicking a field goal. Dolphins took a 17 to 3 lead after Blake Bortles threw a second pick six to cornerback Brent Grimes.

Jacksonville kicked a field goal before Ryan Tannehill threw a passing touchdown. Dolphins kicked a field goal and took a 27 to 6 lead. Dolphins won 27 to 13 as Blake Bortles threw a touchdown after he threw 2 pick sixes.

Baltimore Ravens 5-3-0
Cincinnati Bengals 4-2-1

Game Recap: CINCINNATI-The Baltimore Ravens lost to the Cincinnati Bengals back in week 1. Baltimore winning means the Bengals are likely done. A Bengals win will make it anyones game in the AFC North with the Bengals owning a tiebreaker over the Ravens.

Dalton began this game 4 for 5 with 82 passing yards while giving the Bengals the first points of the game on a rushing touchdown. Ravens responded with a field goal in the second quarter.

One of the reasons the Ravens struggled was because Joe Flacco threw 0 touchdowns and 2 picks. Bengals led 17 to 10 because of Flacco’s turnovers.

Neither Joe Flacco or Andy Dalton threw a passing touchdown. Dalton ran for 2 rushing touchdowns which was the difference in a close and intense 27 to 24 Bengals victory.

The one player that stood out in this contest was Mohammed Sanu. Sanu recorded 5 receptions for 125 receiving yards. Baltimore Ravens are now 5-3. Bengals are 4-2-1 with the tiebreaker over the Ravens.

Houston Texans 4-4-0
Tennessee Titans 2-6-0

Game Recap: TENNESSEE-Zach Mettenberger will make his first career start today with first round pick Taylor Lewan making his third start at left tackle while Bishop Sankey starts his third game at running back. The Texans get Jadeveon Clowney the #1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Ryan Fitzpatrick and Arian Foster played well today. Foster had 18 carries, 144 rushing yards, and 2 rushing touchdowns along with a receiving touchdown. Foster carried the Texans on Sunday.

Fitzpatrick threw 155 passing yards, 1 passing touchdown, and 0 interceptions. Zach Mettenberger threw his first career passing touchdown to tight end Delanie Walker after throwing.

Texans won 30 to 16. Houston is now 4-3. Titans fall to 2-6.

St. Louis Rams 2-5-0
Kansas City Chiefs 4-3-0

Game Recap: KANSAS CITY-Both teams play in the state of Missouri. Kansas City fans get a free home game followed by a World Series game 5 on the same night.

St. Louis had 3 big completions on their first series. Austin Davis hooked up with Kenny Britt for a 43 yard gain. Bennie Cunningham had an 8 yard gain for the Rams before tight end Lance Kendricks scored a touchdown to give the Rams an early 7-0 lead.

Following the Rams touchdown, Kansas City dropped 34 unanswered points. The Chiefs offensive line did a fantastic job run blocking setting up rushing touchdowns for Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis. The Chiefs had 144 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns thanks to this offensive line.

Another reason the Chiefs won was due to the play at 3-4 outside linebacker. Tamba Hali got by left tackle Jake Long at 3-4 right outside linebacker. Long got injured again thanks to the presence of Hali. Justin Houston had 3 sacks at 3-4 left outside linebacker. The Hali and Houston tandem gave the Rams offensive tackles fits.

Chiefs are now 4-3. Rams fall to 2-6.

Philadelphia Eagles 5-2-0
Arizona Cardinals 6-1-0

Game Recap: ARIZONA-Carson Palmer is unbeaten at home. The Philadelphia Eagles were coming off a bye week. Who would begin the season 6-1?

Philadelphia scored the only score in the first quarter as Jeremy Maclin caught a 21 yard touchdown pass from Nick Foles. Second quarter, Andre Ellington ties it up at 7. The game was tied at 7 heading into halftime.

Third quarter, Carson Palmer fires an 80 yard pass to Larry Fitzgerald. Cardinals took a 14-7 lead following his touchdown.

Later in the third, Eagles kicked a field goal. Third quarter, Cardinals up 14 to 10. Nick Foles threw a 54 yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin. Eagles take a 17 to 14 lead after Maclin caught his second receiving touchdown. That would be the score after 3 quarters.

Fourth quarter, Cardinals tie it at 17. Then the Eagles kicked another field goal. Carson Palmer threw a 75-yard passing touchdown to Jonathan Brown. The rookie from Pittsburgh State puts Arizona up 24 to 20. That would be the final score.

Carson Palmer did an excellent job going 20 for 42 with 329 passing yards, 2 passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. Larry Fitzgerald had 7 receptions for 160 receiving yards, and 1 receiving touchdown. Jonathan Brown had 5 receptions for 119 receiving yards, and 1 receiving touchdown. Michael Floyd had 0 receptions on 4 pass attempts. Palmer was fortunate to have big plays from Fitzgerald and Brown despite the absence of Floyd.

Indianapolis Colts 5-3-0
Pittsburgh Steelers 5-3-0

Game Recap: PITTSBURGH-Pittsburgh hosted Indianapolis following a Monday Night Football win over the Houston Texans. Now the Colts come to Heinz Field. What would happen on Sunday.

This game came down to one thing. Quarterback play. Andrew Luck threw for 400 passing yards, but not having Reggie Wayne at wide receiver severely limited his overall game. Ben Roethlisberger completed 40 out of 49 passes with 522 passing yards, 6 passing touchdowns and 0 interceptions.

Indianapolis dominated on the opening possession. Once the Steelers scored a touchdown and limited the Colts to a field goal you knew this game was theres.

Antonio Brown had 10 receptions 133 receiving yards and 1 receiving touchdown at wide receiver. Tight end Heath Miller has 7 receptions, 112 receiving yards, and 1 receiving touchdown.

Ben Roethlisberger delivered a statement win as the Steelers defeated the Colts 51 to 34. Pittsburgh also hosts the Baltimore Ravens in week 9. Both teams will be 5-3-0 when the rematch takes place at Heinz Field next Sunday Night.

Oakland Raiders 0-7-0
Cleveland Browns 4-3-0

Game Recap: CLEVELAND-The Browns hosted the winless Raiders. Cleveland was too good to lose to two winless teams in back-to-back weeks right?

Cleveland took care of business early with 3 consecutive field goals before the Raiders added two field goals. Nobody scored a touchdown until the fourth quarter when Brian Hoyer threw a touchdown pass to Andre Hopkins.

Cleveland stepped up in the fourth quarter. One big concern that must be corrected in week 9 is the running game. Cleveland cannot continue to rely on Hoyer without a running game. Hoyer got off to a hot start, but has struggled the past few weeks at times. Cleveland needs to be more productive on the ground after posting a measly 39 rushing yards against the Oakland Raiders.

Cleveland won 23 to 13. Browns have a winning record once again with a 4-3 record. Raiders fall to 0-7.

Green Bay Packers 5-3-0
New Orleans Saints 3-4-0

Game Recap: NEW ORLEANS-Aaron Rodgers had the best touchdown to interception ratio heading into this contest. The Saints were 2-0 at the Mercedes Benz Super Dome heading into Sunday Night. Those were the two statistics to watch for.

First quarter, 3rd and 10, Aaron Rodgers fires a 70-yard touchdown pass to Randall Cobb. Packers gain a 7-0 lead.

Next series, Drew Brees fires a 45 yard pass to Kenny Stills. Next play Drew Brees handed the ball off to wide receiver Brandin Cooks who ran for a rushing touchdown as a rookie.

Later in the first Aaron Rodgers fired a 67-yard pass to running back Eddie Lacy. First down Packers, Saints held the Packers to a field goal on the following series before tying it up at 10. This game kept going back and forth with the Packers and Saints tied at 16 at halftime.

Second half Saints got the ball. Mark Ingram with a 28 yard gain on the ground. Next series still tied at 16, Aaron Rodgers threw his first pick of the game to David Hawthorne. The Saints capitalized when Drew Brees fired a three consecutive touchdowns. Drew Brees established amazing chemistry with rookie wide receiver Brandin Cooks while getting tight end Jimmy Graham a receiving touchdown in his first game back.

Saints won 44 to 23. Drew Brees was phenomenal going 27 for 32 with 311 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns, and no interceptions. It was not just that. Brees talked about how the entire pass protection showed up by the offensive line, tight ends, and running backs and even credited Peppers and Matthews for sacking him without throwing his linemen under the bus. You have to tip your hat to Brees for doing this. Running back Mark Ingram had 24 carries, 172 rushing yards, and 1 receiving touchdown. Having multiple playmakers like Colston, Cooks, and Stillis in the World Series gives you a chance to win. Left guard Ben Grubbs and right guard Jahri Evans look phenomenal.

After watching the Saints play, you have to admit that they still have a shot. New Orleans capitalized on that by going 3-4 to begin the season. The fate of the Saints season will take place against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football.

Washington Redskins 3-5-0
Dallas Cowboys 6-2-0

Game Recap: DALLAS-Colt McCoy made his first start for the Washington Redskins in Dallas after playing college football at Texas. McCoy led the Texas Longhorns to the 2010 BCS National Title Game where Texas faced Alabama and lost after Colt McCoy got injured on the first series. If Washington wins then quarterback Colt McCoy can argue that he was a better draft pick than Sam Bradford if the Redskins turn this 2-5 season around.

First quarter not much happened. Kicker Kai Forbath kicked a field goal. Redskins led 3-0 after 1 quarter.

Brandon Meriweather had a couple of turnovers in the first half. Meriweather forced a fumble and then recovered a fumble near the Redskins goal line when Dallas was in scoring position.

Second quarter Tony Romo threw a touchdown to Dez Bryant. Dallas gains a 7-3 lead. That would be the score at halftime.

Third quarter Tony Romo gets injured, Brandon Weeden would come in. This game was tied at 10 after 3 quarters. This game would come down to former Browns like Colt McCoy and Brandon Weeden in a game would decide who won.

Fourth quarter, Colt McCoy runs for a rushing touchdown. Redskins take a 17-10 lead. Brandon Weeden followed that up with a passing touchdown to Jason Witten. This game was tied at 17 and headed into overtime.
Losing Tony Romo was huge. It helped Washington obtain a 20 to 17 victory in overtime. DeMarco Murray still posted his 8th consecutive game of 100 rushing yards despite losing to Tony Romo.
