2014 NFL Week 17 Game Recaps

Carolina Panthers 7-8-1
Atlanta Falcons 6-10-0

Game Recap: ATLANTA-The winner of this game clinched the NFC South. The Panthers were 3-0 in December and the Falcons were 5-0 in the NFC South heading into today. Both teams need to keep their streaks alive in order to make the playoffs.

Carolina simply dominated this game. Following a Graham Gano field goal, Cam Newton fired a touchdown to tight end Ed Dickson.

Matt Bryant got a field goal in the second quarter, but it meant very little with Roman Harper picking off Matt Ryan for a pick 6.

Cam Newton ran for a rushing touchdown. Carolina led 24 to 3 at halftime.

Carolina scored 10 more points in the third quarter. Defensive tackle Star Lotulelei had 7 solo tackles and 2 sacks in the Panthers 34 to 3 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Cleveland Browns 7-9-0
Baltimore Ravens 10-6-0

Game Recap: BALTIMORE-Cleveland had their hands full with Johnny Manziel and Josh Gordon out for this game. Jesse Lucas recaps this game.

Conner Shaw got the starting nod for the Browns with Hoyer and Manziel both out with injuries and it actually wasn’t bad. Shaw was 14 of 28 for 177 yards. He did have 1 interception too. West led rushing for Cleveland with 94 yards and a touchdown. No really outstanding stats on the Cleveland side of the ball, but the Ravens had a few standouts this week. Joe Flacco was 22 of 36 for 312 yards and 2 touchdowns. Justin Forsett had 119 yards rushing. Steve Smith Sr. had 8 receptions for 90 yards. Torrey Smith had 4 receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown. The blocking by center Jeremy Zuttah helped the Ravens win this contest.

There really was not too much to love about this game. In terms of excitement Cleveland controlled this game for the first three quarters until Flacco stepped up in the fourth quarter. Ravens fans loved this game since they locked up a playoff spot. Other than that there was not too much to celebrate.

Dallas Cowboys 12-4-0
Washington Redskins 4-12-0

Game Recap: WASHINGTON-Washington needed a big game from RGIII in order for his job to be save. Dallas needed a win and some help if they wanted to lock up a first round bye.

Robert Griffin III had 336 passing yards. Besides throwing 2 passes to Bruce Carter on the Cowboys he did alright. You would like to see him play like this in year 4, but I get a feeling he will start somewhere next season.

DeMarco Murray and Dez Bryant had huge games in the Cowboys revenge victory at FedEex Field. Murray had 100 rushing yards which gave him 1,845 besting Emmitt Smith's 1,773 receiving yards. Dez Bryant surpassed Terrell Owens for most receiving touchdowns in a season with 16 receiving touchdowns besting T.O.'s 15 touchdowns. Cowboys won 44 to 13.

Indianapolis Colts 11-5-0
Tennessee Titans 2-14-0

Game Recap: TENNESSEE-The Colts faced the Titans in a meaningless game. I wondered if backup Matt Hasselbeck would start against his former team the Titans.

Luck started and took care of business early. Luck threw 2 touchdowns to give the Colts a 14 to 0 lead. Luck finished the season with 40 passing touchdowns, 16 interceptions, and 4,761 passing yards. Luck only threw 16 passes before starting Matt Hasselbeck in a 27 to 10 win over the Titans. Coby Fleener had 2 receiving touchdowns in this contest.

Detroit Lions 11-5-0
Green Bay Packers 12-4-0

Game Recap: GREEN BAY-Lions VS Packers. This game decided the NFC North.

Micah Hyde energized the crowd when he returned a 55 yard punt for a touchdown. Packers led 7 to 0 after one.

Aaron Rodgers threw a touchdown to Randall Cobb before getting injured. Rodgers left Lambeau Field after the Packers gained a 14-0 lead on the Lions. Rodgers returned later in the second half following the injury. Rodgers reunited with Cobb shortly after to put the Packers up 21 to 14 after Calvin Johnson scored two touchdowns to tie it up at 14.

Rodgers captured the flag that was the NFC North division when he ran it in for a touchdown that gave the Packers a 28 to 14 lead. Pack won 30 to 20.

Jacksonville Jaguars 3-13-0
Houston Texans 9-7-0

Game Recap: HOUSTON-Jesse Lucas recapped our next 4 games. This game featuring the Jaguars and the Texans was probably the least interesting of those 4 games.

The Jaguars didn’t have really anything to look positively at from this game. The only real good point of the game was seeing Cecil Shorts III throw a 23 yard touchdown pass. Blake Bortles was 14 of 33 for 117 yards and he was sacked 5 times. Telvin Smith did record 11 tackles. And Johnathan Cyprien and J.T. Thomas III each had 7 tackles. Casey Keenum had a much better game. 25 of 35 for 250 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Andre Johnson had 10 receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown. J.J. Watt had a dominate performance recording 6 tackles 3 sacks and a forced fumble.

New York Jets 4-12-0
Miami Dolphins 8-8-0

Game Recap: MIAMI-Both teams were out of the NFL Playoffs. One of these quarterbacks had a perfect game with a passer rating of 158.3 which is the maximum quarterback rating.

Geno Smith tore up Miami’s secondary this week. He threw 20 of 25 for 358 yards and 3 touchdowns. Smith really showed what he is capable of doing and I think it’s possible that the Jets will keep Rex Ryan as the head coach and bring in a new GM to give Geno Smith some weapons to work with. The Jets could be serious contenders next season. Eric Decker also had an amazing game. 10 catches for 221 yards and a touchdown. That’s an average of 22 yards a catch. This game was very high scoring and was almost completely offense. Ryan Tannehill was 23 of 39 for 259 yards and a touchdown. Lamar Miller had 19 rushing attempts for 178 yards and a touchdown. His longest was 97 yards. Brian Hartline had 5 receptions for 94 yards. Landry had 107 yards returning.

Chicago Bears 5-11-0
Minnesota Vikings 7-9-0

Game Recap: MINNESOTA-This game determined who got last place in the NFC South. Jay Cutler started this one after Jimmy Clausen was ruled out.

This game was meaningless for all parties involved. I continue to be disappointed by the Bears. I really expected big things for them this year but they’ve fallen on their butts time after time. Jay Cutler was 23 of 36 for 172 yards this week. No touchdowns, no interceptions. Mundy led the defense for the bears with 7 tackles. Teddy Bridgewater was 17 of 25 for 209 yards and a touchdown. Matt Asiata had 91 yards rushing. Audie Cole led the Vikings with 11 tackles.

Buffalo Bills 9-7-0
New England Patriots 12-4-0

Game Recap: NEW ENGLAND-It is a shame Buffalo lost to the Raiders. When you keep Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, and Tom Brady from throwing touchdowns in December you deserve to be in the playoffs.

This game had absolutely no effect on anything for the Patriots. However Bill Belichick in the past has played his starters throughout the entire season no matter what the post season picture looks like. The Bills played exceptionally well today even though they were playing against mostly second string players. Jimmy Garopolo had a decent outing going 10/17 for 90 yards. Kyle Orton was 16 of 23 for 176 yards and a touchdown. His wide receivers Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods are playing like franchise receivers in December. I think the offense will be more explosive with these two returning next season. Ron Brooks had 8 tackles on the day as well. For the Patriots Brandon LaFell had 4 receptions for 70 yards.

Philadelphia Eagles 10-6-0
New York Giants 6-10-0

Game Recap: NEW YORK-The Eagles entered this game on a 3 game losing streak while the Giants entered this game on a winning streak. You assume the Giants would win with all the momentum they had.

Jordan Matthews was the star of this game. Matthews had 8 receptions, 105 receiving yards, and 1 receiving touchdown for the Eagles in their 34 to 26 win over the New York Giants. Eagles end their 3 game losing streak against one of the hottest NFC North teams in December.

New Orleans Saints 7-9-0
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2-14-0

Game Recap: TAMPA BAY-Tampa Bay needed to lose this game to secure the #1 pick in the NFL Draft. Everyone picked the Saints to win.

It looked like the Titans might get the top pick for much of this game. The Buccaneers got off to a 10-0 lead and let 20 to 7 at halftime. Yet the Bucs still lost this game.

Usually Drew Brees plays well so his supporting cast steps up. On Sunday, Brees played like crap. His offensive line did an awesome job blocking and Marques Colston caught the game-winning touchdown before adding insult to injury with a safety.

Saints won 23 to 20. Buccaneers blow 13 point lead in second half and get rewarded with bad behavior as they win the Marcus Mariota sweepstakes.

San Diego Chargers 9-7-0
Kansas City Chiefs 9-7-0

Game Recap: KANSAS CITY-These teams met on week 17 last week in San Diego. Kansas City lost to the Chargers as San Diego got the 6 seed. Chargers had another chance to get the 6 seed with Alex Smith out at quarterback.

The Chargers controlled their own destiny going into this game. All the needed to do was win to wrap up the last wildcard spot in the AFC. But they never led in this game. The Chiefs got the lead early and never let it go. Phillip Rivers was 20 of 34 for 291 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. Manta Te’o led the Chargers defense with 9 tackles. The real story of the game was the Chiefs sack hungry defense. Justin Houston led the attack with 4 sacks. The Chiefs needed to win and also needed the Ravens and Texans to lose but they both won so the AFC West will only have 1 playoff team.

Oakland Raiders 3-13-0
Denver Broncos 12-4-0

Game Recap: DENVER-Denver needed this win to secure the #2 seed in the AFC. You knew the Broncos would win since they were 7-0 at home entering Sunday against one of the worst AFC squads.

Say what you want about C.J. Anderson getting 3 scores. He did not get 100 rushing yards while Demaryius Thomas dominated at wide receiver.

Denver won this with defense. DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib, and T.J. Ward played like the free agent signings that Denver paid big money for. Von Miller had a sack and dominated this game. Defensive tackles Terrance Knighton and Sylvester Williams clogged the running lanes and limited the Raiders to 67 rushing yards.

Arizona Cardinals 11-4-0
San Francisco 49ers 7-8-0

Game Recap: SAN FRANCISCO-Cardinals VS 49ers. Ironic that the Cardinals host Super Bowl 49 while the 49ers host Super Bowl 50? Would Jim Harbaugh end his coaching regime with the 49ers in a bang?

This game was a shootout in the first half. Colin Kaepernick played turnover free ball. He fired the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter to give the 49ers a 20 to 17 win over the Cardinals.

Kaepernick did threw for 204 passing yards while throwing 2 passing touchdowns and no interceptions.

St. Louis Rams 6-10-0
Seattle Seahawks 12-4-0

Game Recap: SEATTLE-Seattle needed to win to lock up home field. Last time these teams met, the Rams won on a B.S. call at the end of the game.

The Rams took a 6 to 0 lead. The Seahawks got their act together in the second half. Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman both did an awesome job in coverage. The Seahawks corner dominated in man and press coverage. Thomas stood out in zone coverage at free safety. Kam Chancellor did an effective job blitzing in the Seahawks 20 to 6 win over the Rams.

Cincinnati Bengals 10-5-1
Pittsburgh Steelers 11-5-0

Game Recap: PITTSBURGH-Like the Panthers VS Falcons and Lions VS Packers game, this was supposed to be a 1 PM game. Because this game had division implications they flexed the game back.

Antonio Brown started things off for the Steelers, with a 74 yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Suisman kicked the extra point for the Steelers , to lead 7-0. The Bengals responded with a long four minute drive, ending with a 17 yard pass from Dalton to Bernard for a touchdown. The game is now tied 7-7.

Mike Nugent and Shawn Suishman both scored field goals for their teams in the second quarter, tieing the game once again at 10- 10. This is where things went wrong for the Bengals. Dalton suffered a untiley interception by B. Mcain, setting the Steelers up for a touchdown by Martavis Bryant. The Steelers now lead 17-10. This is their first lead of the game.

The Steelers end the quarter with another field goal by Nugent. Big Ben and The Steelers now lead 20-10 heading into halftime against the Bengals. Dalton's two intercpetions have really set up the Steelers for some easy scores in the first half. If the Bengals want any chance in the second half, they need limit their turnovers.

Ben Rothlisberger ends the half with 16 of 26 for 191 yards and one touchdown, while Daltons first half remained lackluster, going 11-16 for 91 yards, 1 touchdown and two interceptions. Another special teams score for the Steelers should really kill off any remaining momentum for the Bengals and lock up this game.

The third quarter for a defensive struggle, with both teams trying hard, but failing to reach the endzone. The Bengals needed a comeback, and it started with Gresham. Still in pain from a injury in the first half, Gresham hauled in a five yard pass from Dalton, to make it a three point game.

While the Bengals needed a comeback, the Steelers needed to put the game away, and they did, with a monsterous 64 yard pass from Big Big Rothlisberger to Antonio Brown. The touchdown sealed Cincinati's fate and ultimately won The Steelers the game 27-17.

Despite a fourth quarter interception by Roethlisberger, he finishes the game with 24-38 for 317 yards and one touchdown. Dalton came up short for the Bengals with 27 of 38 for 244, one touchdown and two interceptions.

The win gives the Steelers The AFC North and puts them up agaisnt their rival, the Ravens, next week during wildcard weekend. The Bengals will play in wildcard weekend as well, agaisnt The Indianapolis Colts.
