2014 NFL Week 16 Game Recaps

Tennessee Titans 2-13-0
Jacksonville Jaguars 3-12-0

Game Recap: JACKSONVILLE-As far as playoff implications go this was an extremely boring game. The loser was guaranteed the #2 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Jesse Lucas recapped this game.

That doesn’t mean that the Jaguars weren’t gonna put up a fight against the Titans, especially on defense. Rookie linebacker Telvin Smith had an impressive 10 solo tackles plus 5 assisted tackles. Rookie Aaron Colvin also seemed to be really on the ball tonight with 7 solo tackles. Blake Bortles was 50% on his passing for 115 yards and a touchdown while Todman, Gerhart, and Bortles all ran for 50+ yards. Todman and Gerhart also had carries for touchdowns. Bortles stats don’t jump off the page, but by watching him you can tell his play is starting to get better and I think he is going to end up being a great QB in this league.

Jaguars fans should be excited with how good these rookies are playing!!!! Jacksonville did an awesome job building through the draft by drafting Bortles, Robinson, Lee, Smith, and Colvin. They need to build around this excellent 2014 draft class in 2015 when the 2015 NFL Draft rolls around.

Philadelphia Eagles 9-6-0
Washington Redskins 4-11-0

Game Recap: WASHINGTON-Both teams had injuries at middle linebacker. DeMeco Ryans was on injured reserve and Keenan Robinson was absent for Washington as well.

Mark Sanchez fumbled the ball. Washington settled for a field goal on the opening drive. It was disappointing to see Washington settle for a field goal. By now you would think Robert Griffin III would turn easy drives like that into an automatic 7 points.

LeSean McCoy gave the Eagles the lead. This offensive line did an awesome job run blocking. Center Travis Kelce and right tackle Lane Johnson set up McCoy's 11-yard rushing touchdown. The Eagles had 102 total rushing yards in the first half. When you consider that London Fletcher retired and that Keenan Robinson is out, running the ball is just too easy for the Eagles.

Alfred Morris ran a counter to the left for a rushing touchdown. Washington's offensive line struggled to protect Griffin. Mychal Kendricks a 3-4 middle linebacker, got by Trent Williams at left tackle before sacking Robert Griffin III.

The Eagles secondary does not really have a big name cornerback, but the secondary did a phenomenal job limiting the success of the Redskins receivers. Griffin went 7 for 12 for 95 passing yards in the first half.

Sanchez outplayed Griffin. His offensive line did worse than Washington's in pass protection. Yet Sanchez rose to the occasion. Sanchez picked apart this secondary which has both of their starting cornerbacks on injured reserve.

Tight end Zach Ertz did an awesome job blocking. There were plays where he was used as a 6th man on the offensive line passing situations. There were other plays where Ertz set up big rushing plays for LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles. Outside of center Travis Kelce, I think Ertz was the best blocker in the first half for the Eagles.

Ertz also contributed in the passing game. Ertz led the Eagles with 6 receptions for 69 receiving yards.

The Eagles recovered the ball on a kickoff return. Washington was supposed to get the ball to start the second half, but they fumbled on the kickoff and Eagles cornerback Nolan Carroll recovered the ball.

Philadelphia missed two field goals in the third quarter. Washington got two touchdowns in the second half thanks to fullback Darrel Young.

A 55 yard pass from Robert Griffin III to DeSean Jackson set up Young's second touchdown on the ground. Jackson hauled in 4 receptions for 126 receiving yards.

Riley Cooper caught his second receiving touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Left tackle Trent Williams left the game with an injury and RGIII threw his first pick of the game with Williams gone. Philadelphia finally kicked a field goal which tied the game at 24.

Late in the game, Trent Williams returned to the field. This happened after Mark Sanchez threw a pick. Robert Griffin III avoided turnovers and managed the game well enough to set up a Kai Forbath game-winning field goal.

San Diego Chargers 9-6-0
San Francisco 49ers 7-8-0

Game Recap: SAN FRANCISCO-San Diego needs to win to remain in the AFC Playoff race. They traveled to San Francisco to face the 49ers in a rematch of Super Bowl 29.

San Francisco dominated this game. Frank Gore had 98 rushing yards in the first quarter and 129 rushing yards in the first half. Gore scored the opening touchdown.

Bruce Ellington caught Colin Kaepernick's only passing touchdown in the first half. The South Carolina rookie also ran for a rushing touchdown later in the second quarter which put the 49ers up 28 to 7.

Rivers threw some good passes to Antonio Gates who led the Chargers with 34 receiving yards in the first half and Eddie Royal who led San Diego with 5 receptions plus the Chargers only touchdown after the 49ers took a 21-0 lead.

Antonio Gates caught two receiving touchdowns in the second half. The problem was he caught these receiving touchdowns when the Chargers were still trailing by significant margins. Gates caught a 1 yard receiving touchdown which made it 28 to 14 in the third quarter. Gates caught another 21 yard receiving touchdown later in the fourth quarter which made it 35 to 28.

It looked the 49ers would lead 35 to 14, but a penalty negated a touchdown. Then Colin Kaepernick fumbled the ball which Corey Liuget recovered for a touchdown. Liuget had 2 fumble recoveries in the game. After Liuget's fumble recovery, the 49ers led 28 to 21. Colin Kaepernick had a 90 yard run that gave the 49ers a 35 to 21 lead.

Late in the fourth quarter, Rivers fired a passing touchdown to Malcolm Floyd. This tied the game at 35 with seconds left in the game.

Phil Dawson attempted a 60 yard field goal at the end of the game. The kick was no good and this game went into overtime as a result.

Less than a minute into overtime, Eric Weddle forces a fumble. The San Diego Chargers got the ball back. Chargers went for a field goal. Nick Novak gets the Chargers 3 points in overtime and the win. Chargers win 38 to 35.

This was a mixed review for Rivers who began the game 5 for 10 with 0 touchdowns and 2 picks. Rivers had 356 passing yards, 4 passing touchdowns, and 3 interceptions in a must win game for the San Diego Chargers.

Baltimore Ravens 9-6-0
Houston Texans 8-7-0

Game Recap: HOUSTON-Baltimore has their supporting cast at full health. Meanwhile Case Keenum is starting at quarterback for the Texans.

Houston kicked a field goal and the Texans took a 3 to 0 lead thanks to the leg of Randy Bullock.

The Texans got another field goal in the second quarter to gain a 6 to 0 lead. Bullock kicked another field goal late in the second quarter before Arian Foster threw a passing touchdown and ran for 96 rushing yards.

Kicker Randy Bullock kicked six field goals in the Texans 25 to 13 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Green Bay Packers 11-4-0
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2-13-0

Game Recap: TAMPA BAY-Win and your in! That was the Mantra for The Packers, as they dismanted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday afternoon. Brian Thornsburg recaps the rest.

Eddie Lacy found the endzone first for The Packers, with a monsterous 44 yard touchdown run, to put the Packers up 7-0 over the Tampa Bay Bay Buccaneers. Surprisingly, this would be their only touchdown of the first half, as Rogers and the Packers struggled in the endzone on many occcasions.

Despite having a mostly lackluster offense in Sundays game, the Buccaneers did hold the Packers to a field goal late in the first quarter. The Buccaneers were able to back the Packers up three yards, and forced a incomplete pass intended for Randall Cobb later in the drive. That stop set up a long field goal, which the Packers failed to make.

Tampa Bay had scoring issues during the entire game, only managing to score one field goal from 48 yards about. McCown finished the game with 12 of 26 for 147 yards and one interception. The Tampa Bay running game was equally lackluster, with a total of only 16 yards by two diffrent backs.

Rodgers iced the game late in the third quarter for the Packers, with a deep left pass to Jordy Nelson, to set the Packers up at the Buccaneers one yard line. The Packers failed to punch their way into the endzone on first and second down, but Rodgers connected with Nelson for a one yard pass on third down to score their second touchdown of the game.

The Packers destroyed the Buccaneers 20-3. This is the first time all season, that the Buccaneers were kept out of the endzone for the entire game. Rodgers looked spectactular all game, going 31 of 40, for 318 yards and one touchdown. Lacey had 17 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown in the Packers win over the Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers move on to face their division rival, the Saints , next week. The Packers are playoff bound now and will move on to face the Lions next week in the final regular season game of the year.

Kansas City Chiefs 8-7-0
Pittsburgh Steelers 10-5-0

Game Recap: PITTSBURGH-Jesse Lucas covered this AFC game with playoff implications. One of these teams would be playing for a wild card spot or possibly more.

Alex Smith is gonna be sore the next couple days. He was 31 of 45 for 311 yards. No touchdowns or interceptions and he was also sacked 6 times. Lawrence Timmons recorded 9 tackles and Worilds had 2 sacks. Big Ben had a pretty average day, 18 of 25 for 220 yards and a touchdown. It was a pretty quiet day for Le’Veon Bell, 20 attempts for 63 yards and a touchdown. With the win the Steelers clinch a playoff spot in the AFC. Only 2 playoff spots in the AFC remain thanks to the Steelers win.

Cleveland Browns 7-8-0
Carolina Panthers 6-8-1

Game Recap: CAROLINA-Jesse Lucas also covered this game. Johnny Manziel VS Cam Newton was arguably the most hyped quarterback I was really looking forward to seeing how Johnny Manziel played in his second game out. I really think the Browns should’ve played him the entire game instead of giving the majority of the reps to Brian Hoyer.

Cleveland’s quarterbacks struggled. The best thing that I saw from Cleveland was Pierre Desir completely blanketing Benjamin.

Cam Newton completed 18-31 passes. He threw for 201 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and no picks. Carolina won 17-13.

Detroit Lions 11-4-0
Chicago Bears 5-10-0

Game Recap: CHICAGO-Jesse Lucas gave us his take about the Bears decision to bench Jay Cutler in favor of backup Jimmy Clausen. It was Clausen’s first start since 2010.

Jimmy Clausen got the start this week as the Bears give the ultimate middle finger to Jay Cutler. The funniest thing about it is Clausen actually didn’t play that bad. 23 of 39 for 181 yards, 2 touchdowns, and only 1 interception. He outperformed Jay Cutler this entire year and outperformed Matthew Stafford on Sunday. Alshon Jeffery led the receiving with 6 catches for 72 yards and a touchdown. Calvin Johnson had a whopping 103 yard on only 6 receptions for Detroit and Joique Bell had 13 rush attempts for 74 yards and a touchdown. Detroit got the win to stay in the lead in the division.

The one player that stepped up for th Lions was defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. Suh hauled in 2 sacks and did an excellent job pressuring Clausen. Such also anchored a Lions run defense that kept Matt Forte to a measly 55 rushing yards in a 20-14 victory over the Bears.

Minnesota Vikings 6-9-0
Miami Dolphins 8-7-0

Game Recap: MIAMI-Jesse Lucas covered a majority of the 1 PM games, and this was the highest scoring game of this week leading up to the 4 PM games. You knew that Miami would pull through, but there were moments where the Vikings looked like they were bound to play spoiler.

Ryan Tannehill completely tore apart the Minnesota defense. He was 35 of 47 for 396 yards, 4 touchdowns, and only 1 interception. Lamar Miller had almost 4 times the total combined yards of the rest of the team(98 yards and 1 touchdown). Charles Clay had more than double the receiving yards of the next highest teammate with 114. Mike Wallace pulled in 2 touchdown passes with a total of 58 yards.

On the other side of the ball Teddy Bridgewater had 259 yards and 2 touchdowns on 19 of 26 completions. Probably the next biggest helper on the team was Robert Blanton who had 9 tackles and 2 assists. With their win the Dolphins keep their playoff hopes alive in a very tight AFC playoff race.

Atlanta Falcons 6-9-0
New Orleans Saints 6-9-0

Game Recap: NEW ORLEANS-This game had NFC South implications on the line. The winner was the favorite to win the NFC South while the loser was most likely eliminated from the NFC Playoffs.

New Orleans scored first as running back Mark Ingram gave the Saints a 7 to 0 lead. Atlanta ended up winning 30 to 14 in a blowout statement victory on the road. It seems possible that the Saints might part ways with Sean Payton. If Payton goes, I could see another team hiring him as a head coach possibly the 49ers.

Matt Ryan took care of business in this game. Ryan had another phenomenal game against the Saints. He went 30 for 40 with 322 passing yards, 1 passing touchdown, and no interceptions.

Julio Jones had 7 receptions for 107 receiving yards in a road victory against the Saints at the Super Dome. Atlanta faces Carolina at home in week 17. There is no excuse if the Falcons do not defeat the Panthers at home in week 17. Last season the Falcons spoiled the Carolina Panthers season with a week 17 home win after the Panthers clinched the NFC South Division. That is what will make this match up between these two teams at the Georgia Dome so fun.

Atlanta won the battle in the trenches too. The Falcons front 7 had 5 sacks and they surrendered 0 sacks to the Saints defense. Obviously that was the difference in such a significant road win.

New England Patriots 12-3-0
New York Jets 3-12-0

Game Recap: NEW YORK-Jesse Lucas posted the next two games. This game featured the Patriots and the Jets in New York.

As I predicted on Draft Utopia earlier this week this was a very close game. Rex Ryan may not be that great as a head coach but he is an amazing defensive coordinator. Who else could take the horrible Jets defense and get them to play as well as they always do against Tom Brady. The Jets sacked Brady 4 times and picked him off once.

Brady was 23 of 35 for 182 yards and a touchdown. Amendola led the Patriots in receptions with 8 for 63 yards. Geno Smith had a pretty decent outing. He went 17 of 27 for 210 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Chris Ivory led the rushing for the Jets with 53 yards on 11 attempts. At the very end of the game Nick Folk missed a 52 yard field goal attempt that would’ve given the Jets the lead. Nick Folk may be looking for a new home next season.

On defense the one player that dominated for the Patriots was Jamie Collins. Collins had 6 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles, 11 total tackles, and an interception in a narrow 17 to 16 victory over the New York Jets.

New York Giants 6-9-0
St. Louis Rams 6-9-0

Game Recap: ST LOUIS-This was probably the least exciting game of the week for anyone that was not a fan of one of the teams involved. Literally no playoff implications in this game, but both teams showed up to give a great performance

Eli Manning showed a flash of his old self this week. He was 25 of 32 for 391 yards and 3 touchdowns. Eli usually heats up towards the end of the season to make a playoff run. This year it was just a little too late.

Odell Beckham Jr. is showing week in and week out how great he is going to be this year. This week he totaled 8 receptions for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns.

On the other side of the ball Shaun Hill was 24 of 32 for 290 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Kenny Britt got the majority of the receptions with 9 for 103 yards.

McDonald and Ogletree topped the defensive players with 9 and 8 tackles respectively, McDonald also got a sack. This was probably one of the better games to watch this week if you are a fan of offense.

Indianapolis Colts 10-5-0
Dallas Cowboys 11-4-0

Game Recap: DALLAS-I expected a Colts blowout. I was surprised with how this game went.

Tony Romo began the game throwing 12 completions on 13 pass attempts. He also had 3 passing touchdowns and 0 interceptions in the first half.

By the time the second half started, Indianapolis benched Andrew Luck after trailing 28 to 0 in the first half. This was a very forgettable week 16 game and a major reality check for the Indianapolis Colts. Cowboys won 42 to 7.

Buffalo Bills 8-7-0
Oakland Raiders 3-12-0

Game Recap: OAKLAND-This game was an easy win for the Bills right? You would think the time zone would not affect Buffalo coming off a home win against the Packers.

Derek Carr had 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. To be straight to the point, Oakland took care of business early in the first 3 quarters by playing turnover free ball putting themselves in a position to win.

The Raiders got the confidence to win at the end of the season. I think they have a chance to keep improving and building for the future in 2015.

Seattle Seahawks 11-4-0
Arizona Cardinals 11-4-0

Game Recap: ARIZONA-Most people knew Seattle would win this game leading up to kickoff. At the same time most were also hoping the Cardinals would pull in the upset of the century.

Seattle won with the (Wilson X Wilson)+Lynch formula. How did that go?

Russell Wilson threw 2 passing touchdowns to tight end Luke Wilson. Russell threw 339 passing yards and no picks. Luke caught 3 receptions for 139 receiving yards.

Marshawn Lynch had 10 carries for 113 rushing yards, and 2 rushing touchdowns. Lynch simply dominated on the ground today.

Seattle had 594 total yards of offense which was a franchise best. The Seahawks manhandled the Cardinals 35 to 6 in Arizona.

If Seattle beats the Rams at home, they will be the favorites in the NFC to return to Arizona for Super Bowl 49 on February 1, 2015.

Denver Broncos 11-4-0
Cincinnati Bengals 10-4-1

Game Recap: CINCINNATI-This Monday Night Game was certainly interesting. Brian Thornsburg recapped this thriller.

The Bengals second drive starts and ends with a pick six by Talib, who returned Andy Daltons throw for the first touchdown of the game. This is Talib's second pick six of the year, and is alos a horrible way for the Bengals to start this game.

The Bengals quickly return the favor, when Jeremy Hill takes off for a 85 yard touchdown run. He had great blocking from teammates all the way to the endzone. If Hill can continue to have runs like that, The Bengals might be able to stay in the game. The score is now tied 7-7.

The game started with the two teams trading touchdowns, now they seem to be trading three and outs. Manning tries a short pass to Sanders on third and eight, but Sanders is tackled shortly after the catch, resulting in a loss of two and a fourth down. Mike Nugent scores a field goal for the Bengalson their next drive, to make it a 10-7 game.

Manning throws his first pick of the game late in the first quarter to R. Nelson, who sets The Bengals up at the Denver 22 yard line. Dalton iced off a great drive a few plays later, with a two yard throw to Gresham. The Bengals now lead 17-7 over the Bengals.

The Bengals put together another impressive drive, going 54 yards down the field, but being forced to settle for another field goal. The Bengals now lead 20-7 over the Denver Broncons. The Broncos try for a 49 yard field goal, but the ball falls to the left and is ruled no good.

Manning finishes the first half with 9/15 for 88 yards and one interception, while Andy Dalton is 9/14 for 88 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the first half. I dont know what i find more supring, the fact that The Broncons have not scored one offensive touchdown, or the fat that Andy Dalton only has one interception in the first half.

The second half starts with a 63 yard kick return by Odin for the Broncos. Manning follows that up with a 19 yard pass to Thomas, to put Denver at the two yard line. Manning throws multiple incomplete passes, but is saved by a pass inference penalty, giving them a fresh set of downs. The Penalty allowed for Anderson to run it in from the one yard line. Bengals lead 20-14.

The Bengals get a great kickoff return as well, with Jones going 80 yards before finally being taken down. Dalton and the Bengals get backed up to third and eight, but Dalton responds with a short pass to Bernard for a touchdown. Bengals increase their lead 27-14. Manning is still without a touchdown in this game.

Broncos slowly catch back up with The Bengals, after Manning throws a four yard touchdown to Sanders, putting the Broncos within six points of the Bengals. This is Manning's first touchdown of the entire game.

Von Miller makes a huge play for The Denver defense, when he rips the ball out of Jeremy Hills hand during a run play inside the redzone. This is Hill's fifth turnover this year, and it also saves the Broncos from giving up a touchdown.

Thanks to the turnover by Hill, the Broncos were able to drive all the way down field, and finish of the drive with a five yard touchdown by Sanders. This is Sanders second touchdown of the game. He has over 60 yards in this game so far.

The Bengals get exellent field position, thanks to a long kick return from Tate for 49 yards. The Bengals then get forced three and out, and are forced to settle for a 23 yard field goal by Nugent. This is his third succesful field goal of the night. Bengals lead 30-28.

Peyton Manning seals his own fate, by throwing a untimely interception to Kirkpatrick in the final three minutes of the game. If The Bengals are able to hold this lead, it will be the first time ever that the Bengals beat Peyton Manning. The Bengals lead 37-28. Peyton now has three interceptions.

Kirkpatrick hands Manning his fourth interception of the game in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, ultimatley sealing the win for Cincinati. This is Manning's fifth game in his career where he has thrown four or more touchdowns. His last was in 2010. Bengals win 37-28 over the Broncos. The win puts the Bengals in the Playoffs.
