Matt Murray Needs To Build Off Of His Flawless Rookie Season

Posted By: Lisa Donovan on 8/16/2015

Matt Murray dominated for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins in 2014-2015 with a 1.48 GAA in 40 games. Murray set an AHL record with 4-consecutive shutouts and was simply phenomenal.

Murray had a 4.08 GAA when the Penguins drafted him in the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft so for Murray to reduce his GAA by nearly 3 goals while doing it against much more experienced players is simply phenomenal. Murray also improved his save percentage from .876 in 2011-2012 to .941 with Wilkes-Barre in 2014-2015 once he joined the AHL.

Murray will remain in Wilkes-Barre until 2016-2017. As long as Murray can keep his GAA to under 3.00 while maintaining a save percentage of above .900 then he should be Marc-Andre Fleury's backup in 2017 when Fleury is 33-years-old. Murray is 21-years-old right now so that works out perfectly for him as long as Murray continues to progress.

Matt Murray was as good as it gets in year 1. Penguins' fans have to hope for more of the same moving forward.
