Riley Tufte May Be The First USHL Prospect Drafted

Posted By: Robin Williamson on 3/11/2016

My name is Robin Williamson and I'll be covering USHL prospects for the NHL Draft at Draft Utopia. Last time, I broke down the Team USA prospects. Today I'm gonna examine a guy I scouted when I was with the Fargo Force back in 2014.

That player is Riley Tufte, the #1 overall pick in the 2014 USHL Future Draft. Tufte was a very promising player in high school with 35 points as a sophomore when we drafted him.

Right after our scouting department drafted Tufte, he got sent back to high school, right away. Our ownership at Fargo wasn't pleased because he didn't play right away and returned to Blaine High School. As a result myself and two other scouting interns in Fargo got dismissed from the team.

When Tufte returned to Blaine High School, he got voted team captain as a junior he had 23 goals, 28 assists, and 51 points with 6 goals, 6 assists, and 12 points in the Minnesota State tournament as a junior.

Tufte appeared to have more promise in 2015. He got off to such a hot start with 6 goals, 1 assist, and 7 points before returning to Blaine High School for his senior season where he was captain for the second year in a row.

Tufte has had a monster senior season with 47 goals, 31 assists, and 78 points in 25 games at Blaine High School. Tufte had 2 goals, 5 assists, and 7 points during the 2016 Minnesota state tournament as a senior in two gaemes.

Tufte is 6-5 190 lbs. He got nominated for the YHH Player Of The Year of the Award in Minnesota. Tufte was talented enough to play in the USHL, but he chose to return to high school in front of his family and friends for his final two seasons.

With Tufte back in the USHL, you will hear a lot more about him in the 2016 USHL Playoffs. For now, Tufte needs to buckle up for the homestretch that the Fargo Force are about to encounter in the USHL because Tufte has the ability to pass Clayton Keller who has been on a cold streak and Keiffer Bellows who has not been as productive since leaving Sioux Falls. How he does during this window of opportunity will likely determine his draft stock, but expect Tufte to get selected ahead of Chad Krys in June's 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
