2024 MLS Mock Draft: Final Mock 3 Rounds
Round 2
Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: December 19, 2023.
Toronto F.C.: Charlie Harper, D, North Carolina
- The 6-2 180 lb Charlie Harper is the second of two freshman redshirt players in the 2024 MLS Super Draft. He's also my twenty first underclassmen in my 2024 MLS Mock Draft kicking off the second round.
- Charlie Harper is the son of Allan Harper. He's also versatile enough to play the 4 at sweeper or the 5 at center back with his versatility. Charlie Harper is only 19 or 20 years old as a 2022 High School graduate born on June 6th. Toronto can stash him in MLS Next or use one of their three Under 22 International roster slots on Charlie Harper if he plays well enough to make the MLS right out of the gate. Toronto F.C. can also let Charlie Harper continue to develop at North Carolina as a sophomore redshirt in 2024 and a junior redshirt in 2025 before having to decide whether to sign him or let him walk. Charlie Harper helped North Carolina get 8 shutouts in 2023.
Previous Pick: Kenny Nielsen, D, Georgetown
Colorado Rapids: Ernest Mensah Jr., D, Xavier
- The 5-10 177 lb Ernest Mensah Jr. has the versatility to play the 2 at left back, the 3 at right back, the 4 at sweeper, or the 5 at center back with his versatility. He also is a domestic born player that will not require an International roster slot. Ernest Mensah Jr. has spent the last two seasons at Xavier playing the 3 at right back.
- Ernest Mensah Jr. had 0 goals, 2 assists, 2 points, helped Xavier record 7 shutouts, and played 1,109 minutes as a true freshman in 2022. Ernest Mensah Jr. had 0 goals, 1 assist, 1 point, helped Xavier record 8 shutouts, and played 1,283 minutes as a true sophomore in 2023.
- Ernest Mensah Jr. has put on 14 lbs of muscle since graduating High School back in 2022 since he was 5-10 163 lbs during his senior year of High School in the Fall of 2021. Ernest Mensah Jr. is the twenty second underclassmen in the top thirty one of my 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
Previous Pick: Mouhameth Thiam, M, Virginia
Inter Miami C.F.: Palmer Ault, F, Butler
- Inter Miami C.F. drafts a striker in the second round to groom behind Luis Suarez who signed a one year contract with an option for a second year. Palmer Ault is a player Inter Miami C.F. can draft by gambling on him to be a successor for Luis Suarez down the road.
- The 5-10 160 lb Palmer Ault dominated the 9 at striker with 10 goals, 6 assists, and 26 points to the point where he was named Big East Freshman of the Year during his freshman season in 2022. Ault did so well as a freshman, that he entered the preseason as the early favorite to go first overall in the 2024 MLS Super Draft. Palmer Ault only had 6 goals, 0 assists, and 12 points as a sophomore in 2023 at Butler.
- Palmer Ault is only 19-years-old. He won Mr. Soccer in the State of Indiana as a High School senior after his dad won Mr. Basketball in the State of Indiana. Honestly, Inter Miami C.F. is a team that can gamble on Palmer Ault in the second round as this pick could become a massive steal if Ault reverts to the player he was in 2022. Palmer Ault was the twenty third underclassmen to get picked in this mock draft.
Previous Pick: Hale Lombard, F, Lafayette
Los Angeles Galaxy: Taylor Calheira, F, UMBC
- Los Angeles runs a 3-4-2-1 formation with three defenders, three midfielders, two attacking midfielders, and one striker. Douglas Costa at attacking midfielder is the one building block the Los Angeles Galaxy have.
- The Los Angeles Galaxy need a striker after getting rid of Javier Hernandez also known as Chicharito. The 6-0 170 lb Taylor Calheria was considered a prseason first round prospect and he's one of the most consistent forwards in college soccer that an MLS team can land in the second round of what is a very deep striker class. The Los Angeles Galaxy have two International roster slots, but so if they spend their first second round pick on a domestic player that is consistent at striker, they can save those International roster slots for their last two selections.
- Taylor Calheira had 9 goals, 5 assists, and 23 points as a sophomore in the Fall of 2021 Taylor Calheira had 11 goals, 7 assists, 29 points, and won 2022 American East Striker Of The Year as a junior in 2022. Taylor Calheira had 10 goals, 4 assists, 24 points, and won 2023 American East Striker Of The Year as a senior in 2023. Taylor Calheira is the second UMBC player to do that after scoring 30 goals in his final three seasons at UMBC.
- Taylor Calheira is the second player in UMBC history to repeat as an award winner for UMBC since Pete Caringi III in 2012 and 2013. What makes Taylor Calheira's achievement more impressive is that his teammate Ryan Becher transferred to UCLA. Ryan Becher is the younger brother of Vancouver Whitecaps 2022 first round pick Simon Becher, ad Taylor Calheira showed he could still be the man at UMBC without Ryan Becher.
- Taylor Calheira had an assist against Maryland as a sophomore. Taylor Calheira finished his four year career at UMBC with 32 goals, 16 assists, 80 points, 207 shots, 102 shots on goal, 10 game-winning goals, 5,086 minutes played with three consecutive seasons of 1,300 minutes played, and went 4/6 on penalty kicks in his career.
Austin FC: Dylan Kropp, D, Xavier
- Austin F.C. runs a 4-2-3-1 formation. Austin FC drafts a center back that the team can stash in MLS Next and potentially promote down the road. Austin FC needs a replacement to Kipp Keller at center back and they get Keller's replacement here with this second round pick.
- The 6-2 182 lb Dylan Kropp can play the 4 at sweeper or the 5 at center back with his versatility. Dylan Kropp is also the twenty fourth underclassmen to be featured in my 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
- Dylan Kropp shows flashes of first round ability despite only being a sophomore. While he's improved each season, he hasn't dominated in his two seasons at Xavier.
- Dylan Kropp had 0 goals, 1 assist, 1 point, and helped Xavier record 8 shutouts in 18 starts as a true freshman in 2022 when Cole Jensen was the first goalie picked in the 2023 MLS Super Draft. Dylan Kroop had 0 goals, 3 assists, 3 points, and helped Xavier record 9 shutouts without Cole Jensen in 2023. Dylan Kroop is a domestic born player that will not require an International roster slot.
Previous Pick: Finn McRobb, D, High Point
Chicago Fire F.C.: Ruben Mesalles, M, Duke
- Chicago Fire F.C. started three different guys at right back. Chicago Fire F.C. gets someone who can play the 3 at right back here.
- The 6-0 165 lb Ruben Mesalles might be the most versatile player on Duke. The former IMG Academy midfielder, Ruben Mesalles can play the 2 at left back, the 3 at right back, the 6 at defensive midfielder, the 7 at right winger, and the 11 at left winger.
- Duke's junior has the versatility to play five different positions, but his natural position at Duke was the 11 at left winger. He is also the twenty fifth underclassmen to crack my 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
- Ruben Mesalles had 4 goals, 4 assists, 12 points, and helped Duke record 6 shutouts in 2023. Ruben Mesalles played a minimum of 1,340 minutes in all three seasons at Duke. He also received an invite to the 2023 MLS College Showcase following his junior season. Chicago can draft him, let him play out his senior year at Duke, and sign him in 2024 if they don't want to add him to the roster right away too from a flexibility standpoint.
Previous Pick: Cameron Briggs, D, New Hampshire
D.C. United: Eliot Goldthorp, M, Hofstra
- D.C. United grabs an International player. One player who could be available in the second round is Hofstra midfielder Eliot Goldthorp.
- The 6-0 170 lb Eliot Goldthorp is one of the more consistent International players in the 2024 MLS Super Draft. Eliot Goldthorp's hometown is Leeds, United Kingdom. D.C. United still has 2 International roster slots available.
- Eliot Goldthorp had 17 goals, 6 assists, 40 points, and 6 game-winning goals starting all 21 games for Hofstra as a true sophomore in 2022. Eliot Goldhorp had 8 goals, 15 assists, 31 points, and 5 game-winning goals starting 21 out of 22 games in 2023. Hofstra made the Sweet 16 in the 2023 College Cup this year. Eliot Goldthorp took 74 shots in 2022 and 67 shots in 2023. He's also got 62 career shots on goal and 11 game-winning goals in his career at Hofstra.
- Eliot Goldthorp is an underclassmen that got invited to the 2023 MLS College Showcase. He's the twenty sixth underclassmen to be featured in my 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
- Eliot Goldthorp plays the 8 at central midfielder and the 10 at attacking midfielder. Eliot Goldtorp is one of the more consistent midfielders in the NCAA and is talented enough to get drafted in the second round of the 2024 MLS Super Draft.
Previous Pick: Filip Mirkovic, M, Pittsburgh
Real Salt Lake: Ian Smith, D, Denver
- Real Salt Lake uses this second round pick from the New York City F.C. on a future left back at the 2 with Real Salt Lake's starting left back Bryan Oviedo being 33-years-old. I narrowed this pick down to Denver left back Ian Smith and Notre Dame left back Paddy Burns. Ian Smith is one of the younger, but more consistent left backs that a team like Real Salt Lake could gamble on here.
- The 6-1 185 lb Ian Smith redshirted in 2021, but played the 2 at left back for the Denver Pioneers the last two years. He's Denver's best left back since the Josh Drack who got drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the first round of the 2021 MLS Super Draft. Ian Smith had 4 goals, 3 assists, 10 points, helped Denver record 12 shutouts, and started all 20 games as a freshman redshirt in 2022. Ian Smith had 0 goals, 8 assists, 8 points, helped Denver record 11 shutouts, and started all 20 games for the second year in a row as a sophomore redshirt in 2023.
- Ian Smith is a durable consistent left back that defends effectively. He's got the body and size to play center back despite being a natural 2 at left back. Ian Smith is the twenty seventh underclassmen to crack my 2024 MLS Mock Draft. The crazy thing with Ian Smith is he is consistent enough as a defender for a team to gamble on him in the first round.
Previous Pick: Peter Mangione, F, Penn State
Charlotte FC: Roberto Ordonez, M, Cal State Fullerton
- Charlotte FC runs a 4-3-3 formation. Charlotte FC has quality starters at forward, midfielder, defense, and goalie. The problem with Charlotte FC is their coaching led to this team underperforming in 2023. Dave Tepper fired Charlotte FC's head coach for the second time in two years as Charlote FC's owner. Charlotte FC has 8 International roster slots along with 3 Under 22 International roster slots.
- The 5-11 165 lb Roberto Ordonez had 9 goals, 10 assists, and 28 points so far in 2023. The junior redshirt on Cal State Fullerton might be a senior in the 2024 MLS Super Draft, but Roberto Ordonez can declare for the 2024 MLS Super Draft if he believes he is a first round pick. Roberto Ordonez was the number one player in the midseason on Top Drawer Soccer among all upperclassmen including sophomores, juniors, and seniors in Men's College Socer.
- Roberto Ordonez can help Cal State Fullerton now, and he's the twenty eighth underclassmen to get picked in this mock.
Previous Pick: Eliot Goldthorp, M, Hofstra
CF Montreal: Hugo Bacharach, D, Indiana
- CF Montreal drafts a center back here. The 6-4 210 lb Hugo Bacharach was a three year starter at Farleigh Dickinson, but he transferred to Indiana after his junior year hoping to step in as an immediate fill in player at center back with Daniel Munie no longer on the team. Hugo Bacharach has the versatility to play the 5 at center back or the 6 at defensive midfielder. He's a great complimentary center back, but he's not a lead center back that can play the sweeper too. Having the size and versatility that Bacharach has should get him picked in the third round though.
- Hugo Bacharach had 4 goals, 4 assists, and helped Indiana record 8 shutouts in 2023. Hugo Bacharach's play at center back next to Joey Maher was a big reason why Indiana shutout Penn State 1-0 to win the 2023 Big 10 Championship.
- I mocked Hugo Bacharach in the third round, but noticed that a few MLS Mock Drafts have Bacharach at 10 even though he would require an International roster slot. CF Montreal gets a center back that will help the franchise now here and then waits for a developmental goalie with their third round pick.
Previous Pick: Kris Shakes, G, Penn State
Portland Timbers: Richie Aman, M, Washington
- The 5-9 160 lb Richie Aman had 1 goal, 4 assists, and 6 points as a sophomore playing the 10 at attacking midfielder for Washington in 2023. Richie Aman had 1 goal and 1 assist in Washington's road win over the Indiana Hoosiers. Richie Aman is 19-years-old and turns 20 in March. Richie Aman is somewhat raw, but he's got the upside to be a really successful player at the 10 at attacking midfielder. If Portland takes Kevin Bonilla at 11 it means they will need a forward, midfielder, and goalie while only having two more picks to address three different needs.
- At this point, I'm going to say Portland stays patient with their goalie room and tries to address the other needs with their remaining picks. Richie Aman is a player you can develop into a quality attacking midfielder down the road. Richie Aman would be the twenty ninth underclassmen to get picked in this mock.
Previous Pick: Nick Zieloka, M, Massachusetts
Charlote FC: Paddy Burns, D, Notre Dame
- Charlotte FC runs a 4-3-3 formation. Charlotte FC has quality starters at forward, midfielder, defense, and goalie. The problem with Charlotte FC is their coaching led to this team underperforming in 2023. Dave Tepper fired Charlotte FC's head coach for the second time in two years as Charlote FC's owner.
- The 6-0 175 lb Paddy Burns is a 22-year-old left back on Notre Dame who can play the 2 at left back. Paddy Burns had 5 goals, 0 assists, and 10 points in 2022. Paddy Burns had 3 goals, 1 assist, 7 points, and helped Notre Dame record 10 shutouts when starting in 2023. In the other two games where Notre Dame recorded shutouts, he came off the bench.
- Paddy Burns has a great motor despite turning 23 in January. He's not afraid to call out teammates and challenge them to get better. Even if it means cussing at them when they miss assignments by giving younger less experienced defenders tough love. He would be a first round player in any other MLS Super Draft. He falls to round two outside of the top 40 with the surplus of underclassmen.
Previous Pick: Roald Mitchell, F, Wake Forest
San Jose Earthquakes: Andrew Johnson, D, Cornell
- San Jose has a ton of good center backs that they've drafed in the MLS Super Draft. San Jose drafts another center back that the Earthquakes can start out in MLS Next in 2024. After letting go of both Tanner Beason their 2020 first round pick and Oskar Agren their second 2022 first round pick, San Jose spends a 2024 second round pick on a developmental center back at the 5 that could pair with Daniel Munie down the road in San Jose.
- The 6-2 170 lb Andrew Johnson can play the 4 at swepeer or the 5 at center back since Andrew Johnson was a two year captain with FC Delco prior to enrolling into Cornell. Andrew Johnson has 0 points in both seasons at Cornell going from starting 16 games and helping Conrell produce 4 shutouts as a freshman in 2022 to starting 15 games and helping Cornell produce 3 shutouts as a sophomore in 2023.
- San Jose would draft the 20-year-old center back as a project. Andrew Johnson is the thirtieth underclassmen to be picked in my 2024 MLS Mock Draft. San Jose could develop Andrew Johnson at Cornell in 2024 and then decide whether to keep him for a fourth year at Cornell before signing him by December, 31, 2025. The other option, is San Jose signs him and brings him up to MLS Next right now to develop him more. Either way, this pick would be a long-term development pick rather than an immediate impact selection.
Previous Pick: Noah Singelmann, D, Syracuse
New York Red Bulls: Hosei Kijima, M, Wake Forest
- The New York Red Bulls run a 4-4-1-1 formation which produced 12 shutouts in 2023. The New York Red Bulls have 6 of their 8 International roster slots occupied as well as all 3 of their Under 22 Interational roster slots occupied. Frankie Amaya the first pick in the 2019 MLS Super Draft is one of the teams two central midfielders. Hosei Kijimi would be a depth player at central midfielder, but could compliment someone like Frankie Amaya at central midfielder.
- The 5-10 165 lb Hosei Kijima had 3 goals, 2 assists, and 8 points in 2023. Hosei Kijima is versatile enough to play the 6 at defensive midfielder, the 8 at central midfielder. or the 10 at attacking midfielder. I think his best role of those three may be a box-to-box role at the 8. He's good, but not great defensively, and you'd like to see more offense from him if you wanted him to play the 10 in the MLS.
- Hosei Kijima is the one player with a consensus first round grade in most 2024 MLS Mock Drafts that is still available in the middle of the second round. The New York Red Bulls may go for value over drafting a younger player with a higher ceiling that they can stash.
F.C. Dallas: Jahlane Forbes, M, Wake Forest
- F.C. Dallas gets a player who is versatile enough to play forward, midfielder, or defender. The 6-0 154 lb Jahlane Forbes is versatile enough to play the 2 at left back, the 8 at central midfielder, the 9 at striker, the 10 at attacking midfielder, or the 11 at left winger. Jahlane Forbes had 5 goals, 7 assists, and 17 points as a left winger for Wake Forest in 2023.
Vancouver Whitecaps: Jacob Babali, F, Portland
- Vancouver ran a 3-4-2-1 formation in 2022, but ran a 3-1-4-2 in 2023. I felt like Vancouver had the forwards, midfielders, and defense to go toe-to-toe with someone like LAFC. The defending 2022 MLS Cup Champions, LAFC swept the Vancouver Whitecaps in the first round of the 2023 MLS Playoffs.
- The one unrestricted Free Agent that Vancouver is losing in their starting 11 is left back Tristan Blackmon. Vancouver brought back Blackmon despite trading their 2024 first round pick away.
- Vancouver adds another offensive player for depth. The 6-3 178 lb Jacob Babali had 12 goals, 4 assists, and 28 points playing the 9 at striker as a junior redshirt. Jacob Babali was seen taking a photo with Vancouver Whitecaps co-owner Steve Nash at the 2023 MLS College Showcase. Vancouver has all 11 starters back, so the Whitecaps can go with the best player on their board at pick 45 in the second round as Jacob Babali is the thirty seventh underclassmen to get picked in my 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
Previous Pick: Eitan Rosen, M, Boston University
Los Angeles Galaxy: Turner Humphrey, D, Oregon State
- The 6-4 188 lb Turner Humphrey is a junior redshirt on Oregon State with the versatility to play the 4 at sweeper, the 5 at center back, and the 6 at defensive midfielder. Turner Humphrey had 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 points, and helped Oregon State record 7 shutouts in 2023.
- Turner Humphrey helped Orgon State shutout Washington, San Diego State, UCLA, Portland, and North Carolina with five of those seven shutouts coming on the road. Tanner Humphrey is the thirty first underclassmen to get picked in my 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
Previous Pick: Aidan O'Connor, D, Virginia
Real Salt Lake: Luis Flores, F, Oral Roberts
- The 5-10 170 lb Luis Flores is versatile enough to play the 3 at right back, the 7 at right winger, the 9 at striker, the 10 at attacking midfielder, and can also play right midfielder if needed. Luis Flores was the 2023 Summit League Player Of The Year. Luis Flores had 15 goals, 2 assists, and 32 points as a junior. The Lufkin, Texas native would be eligible to declare for the 2024 MLS Super Draft as a junior. A team like Real Salt Lake can take a flyer on Flores midway in the second round round hoping this pick pays off as Luis Flores is the thirty second player that's an underclassmen in my 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
Previous Pick: Quenzi Huerman, M, North Carolina
Atlanta United F.C.: Mouhammeth Thiam, M, Virgnia
- The 5-5 150 lb Mouhameth Thiam began his career at Radford where he had 5 goals, 3 assists, and 13 points starting 16 of Radford's 17 games 2019 before transferring to Oregon State for three years. Mouhameth Thiam spent the next three years at Oregon State. Mouhameth Thiam had 3 goals, 6 assists, and 12 points in the Spring of 2021. Mouhameth Thiam had 7 goals, 3 assists, and 17 points playing in all 18 games while only starting 9 in the Fall of 2021. Mouhameth Thiam had 5 goals, 4 assists, and 14 points in 17 starts in 2022. Mouhameth Thiam entered the transfer portal once again in 2023 and enrolled at Virginia. Mouhameth Thaim had 5 goals, 4 assists, and 14 points starting all 18 of Virginia's games in 2023.
- Mouhameth Thiam was 2023 ACC Co-Midfielder of the year along with Jeorgio Kocevski. Jeorgio Kocevski is a domestic born player while Mouhameth Thiam is a player that will require an International roster slot if he's promoted to the MLS. Atlanta United F.C. drafts Mouhammeth Thiam and stashes him in MLS Next.
- Mouhameth Thiam has the versatility to play the 7 at right winger, the 8 at central midfielder, the 9 at striker, the 10 at attacking midfielder and the 11 at left winger. His three best positions are left winger, right winger, and striker making Mouhameth Thiam an ideal addition for Atlanta United F.C. here.
Previous Pick: Gabriel Perrotta, G, Marshall
D.C. United: Wayne Frederick, M, Duke
- D.C. United acquired this second round pick from the New England Revolution. I gave the D.C. United a player with the versatility to play both central midfielder and defensive midfielder here. The D.C. United pick the 2022 D.C. Gatorade Player Of The Year Wayne Frederick who enrolled into Duke for his freshman season at Duke in 2022 with the forty ninth pick in my 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
- The 6-0 145 lb Wayne Frederick is a 19-year-old sophomore midfielder on Duke with the versatility to play the 6 at defensive midfielder and the 8 at central midfielder. Wayne Frederick had 3 goals, 3 assists, 9 points, and helped Duke record 5 shutouts in 2023.
- Wayne Frederick is the thirty fourth underclassmen to get picked in the top 50 of my 2024 MLS Mock Draft. Wayne Frederick doesn't turn 20 until June 13, 2024 and is a domestic born player. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Frederick ends up sneaking into the back end of the first round because of this.
Previous Pick: Laurence Wootton, M, Ohio State
St. Louis City SC: Chris Meyers, D, Washington
- St. Louis City SC ran a 4-1-2-1-2 formation with four defensemen, 1 defensive midfielders, two central midfielders, 1 attacking midfielders, and 2 central forwards playing striker and secondary striker as goal scorers. Anthony Markanovich will be back at left back, but John Nelson will not be. One left back still on the board at 50 is Washington Huskies junior redshirt Chris Meyers who took over playing the 2 at left back on the Washington Huskies succeeding Charlie Ostrem in 2022.
- The 5-8 159 lb Chris Meyers played High School at Jesuit High School in California where he had back-to-back 50 point seasons as a junior and senior while recording 20 assists as a senior. Chris Meyers played the 2 at left back, the 6 at defensive midfielder, the 8 at central midfielder, the 10 at attacking midfielder, and the 11 at left winger at Jesuit High School.
- Chris Meyers enrolled at Washington and was the backup left back to Charlie Ostrem until 2022. Chris Meyers had 0 goals, 10 assists, and helped Washington record 7 shutouts while starting 5 of those games as a sophomore redshirt in 2022. Chris Meyers had 1 goal, 0 assists, 2 points, and 3 shutouts as a junior redshirt in 2023.
- Chris Meyers has a 3 star out of five star grade on Top Drawer Soccer. He's also the thirty third underclassmen to get picked in the top 50 of my 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
Previous Pick: Noah Adnan, D, Stanford
Sporting Kansas City: Joey Maher, D, Indiana
- Sporting Kansas City has stability at striker, midfielder, and goalie. Improving the depth on the back line after only recording 8 shutouts in 2023 is going to be the key for Sporting Kansas City this offseason.
- The 6-2 160 lb Joey Maher can play the 4 at sweeper or the 5 at center back. Joey Maher has played in 85 soccer games over the past four years starting in 83 different matches. Joey Maher has helped Indiana's backline produce 40 career shutouts over the past four years. You can argue that alone makes Joey Maher the most consistent center back in the 2024 MLS Super Draft.
- Joey Maher got Indiana to the Championship in the 2020 College Cup and the 2022 College Cup. Indiana won the 2020 Big Ten Championship, lost the 2021 Big Ten Championship to Penn State, lost the 2022 Big Ten Championship to Rutgers before making the 2022 College Cup, and won the 2023 Big Ten Championship over Penn State the same team that they defeated to win the 2020 Big 10 Championship in the Spring of 2021 before losing to that team in the Fall of 2021.
- Sporting Kansas may draft a center back that can quickly develop in the second round of the 2024 MLS Super Draft. Why not take the most experienced center back from a defensive standpoint who helped Indiana record 10 shutouts in the Spring of 2021, 13 shutouts in the Fall of 2021, 8 shutouts in 2022, and 9 shutouts in 2023. Those shutouts over a four year period add up to 40 career shutouts. Joey Maher also had a career high 2 goals, 1 assist, and 5 points during his senior season in 2023.
Previous Pick: Joel Sangwa, D, Akron
Seattle Sounders: Giona Leibold, M, Syracuse
- The 5-9 160 lb Giona Leibold has the versatility to play the 2 at left back, the 6 at defensive midfielder, the 8 at central midfielder, and the 11 at left winger.
- Giona Leibold had 0 goals, 5 assists, 5 points, helped Syracuse record 6 shutouts, and started 11 games as a true freshman in 2021. Giona Leibold had 5 goals, 2 assists, 12 points, helped Syracuse record 9 shutouts as a true sophomore, and started all 22 games on the Syracuse team that won the 2022 College Cup in 2022. Giona Leibold had 0 goals, 2 assists, and helped Syracuse record 3 shutouts in 5 starts before he suffered a season ending injury. Giona Leibold accepted an invite to the 2023 MLS College Showcase.
- The Syracuse junior is the thirty fourth underclassmen that I've mocked in this 2024 MLS Mock Draft. Giona Leibold would be a left back and left winger for depth in MLS Next to start. He could earn a bigger role over time if he does well in MLS Next.
Previous Pick: Ryan Baer, M, West Virginia
Philadelphia Union: Filip Mirkovic, M, Pittsburgh
- Philadelphia has a 3-4-1-2 formation. Philadelphia managed to retain this entire roster after losing the 2022 MLS Cup to LAFC. Philadelphia does lose their left back and three of their four midfielders in 2024. The Philadelphia Union put an extra left back at left midifelder and an extra right back at right midfielder. This essentially gives Philadelphia 5 defenders if you count the defensive midfielders on the left and right side with two central midfielders, one attacking midfielder, and two strikers. Philadelphia also signed a left back in MLS Next allowing the Philadelphia Union to retain most of their core.
- The 6-2 175 lb Filip Mirkovic had 3 goals, 2 assists, 8 points, and helped Pittsburgh get 5 shutouts in 18 starts as a freshman in both the fall of 2020 and spring of 2021 helping Pittsburgh get to the 2020 College Cup. Filip Mirkovic had 3 goals, 5 assists, 14 points, and 6 shutouts as a sophomore in the Fall of 2021. Filip Mirkovic had 3 goals, 12 assists, 18 points, and 7 shutouts as a junior in 2022. Filip Mirkovic had 0 goals, 9 assists, 9 points, and 5 shutouts in 2023.
- Filip Mirkovic is the All Time leader in assists for Pittsburgh. I'm not sure he's in the same tier as other Pitt players like Bertin Jacquesson, Valetin Noel, Edward Kizza, and Jasper Loeffelsend. At the same time, he's too talented to fall out of the second round even with a lack of production in Pittsburgh's final two games of the season where Pittsburgh lost a home game to Louisville and another home game to James Madison in the round of 48 in the 2023 College Cup. It's also worth pointing out that everyone else whose made a 2024 MLS Mock Draft has Filip Mirkovic in the first round of the 2024 MLS Super Draft.
- Someone is picking Filip Mirkovic in the first two rounds of the 2024 MLS Super Draft. I got Philadelphia taking him and stashing him on their MLS Next team while he develops.
Previous Pick: David Jackson, M, Navy
Orlando City S.C.: Carson Hodgson, M, Western Michigan
- Orlando City S.C. should consider a midfielder that generates double digit assists if one becomes available to compliment Duncan McGuire.
- The 5-8 147 lb Carson Hodgson showed the versatility to play the 6 at defensive midfielder, the 8 at central midfielder, the 10 at attacking midfielder, and the 11 at left winger. Hodgson played defensive midfielder, central midfielder, and left winger during his freshman season in 2022. He played attacking midfielder as a sophomore in 2023.
- Carson Hodgson had 0 goals, 4 assists, 4 points, and helped Western Michigan record 12 shutouts, and started all 21 games before winning the 2022 MAC Freshman Of The Year Award as a true freshman in 2022. Carson Hodgson had 8 goals, 11 assists, 27 points, 12 shutouts, and started all 23 games averaging over a point per game as a sophomore in 2023.
- Carson Hodgson is the thirty sixth underclassmen in the draft pool of 391 draft eligible prospects for the 2024 MLS Super Draft that is not a senior. Carson Hodgson has been too consistent these past two seasons at Western Michigan not to go in the first two rounds. The team drafting Hodgson can either let him return to college, give him an MLS Next contract, or give him an opportunity in the MLS perhaps if he blows the team away that drafts him in training camp.
Previous Pick: Trace Alphin, G, Wake Forest
Houston Dynamo F.C.:
Trace Alphin, G, Wake Forest
- Houston Dynamo F.C. goalie Steve Clark is 37-years-old. A goalie to be groomed for the future will be needed. The one goalie in the 2024 MLS Super Draft who did well enough on tape to challenge Notre Dame goalie Bryan Dowd to be the first goalie off the board is Wake Forest goalie Trace Alphin.
- Trace Alphin is a 21-year-old junior redshirt at Wake Forest as well as a three year starter at goalie. He's younger than Notre Dame goalie Bryan Dowd. He's not as complete of a goalie as Dowd right now, but some will argue Alphin has a higher ceiling and upside strictly from a traits standpoint. Trace Alphin also has more experience as a starting goalie than SIU Edwardsville goalie Sam Gomez who was the top goalie off of the board in my last 2024 MLS Mock Draft. Gomez dominated in 2023, but this was his only year as a starting goalie while Trace Alphin is a three year starter at goalie for Wake Forest.
- Trace Alphin had a 0.90 goals against average, a .691 save percentage, 5 shutouts, and a 11-3-5 record playing the 1 at goalie at Wake Forest in 2023. I'm a little bit concerned about Alphin's save percentage which is why I mocked him here to the Houston Dynamo behind my top goalie Bryan Dowd who I got going at 12 now, but it wouldn't shock me if he was the first goalie off the board in this wide open goalie class.
- Trace Alphin had 15 career shutouts in 3 seasons at Wake Forest if you exlude his redshirt year where he didn't play in 2020-2021. Trace Alphin was the most consistent goalie at the 2023 MLS College Showcase. He displayed the accrobatics, reflexes, good hands, communication, and confidence you want from a starting goalie.
- He will need a year at Wake Forest or MLS Next in 2024, but should be ready for a promotion from MLS Next to MLS by the Summer of 2025. His learning curve is similar to Patrick Schulte, but he's not as advanced as Schulte was coming out of Saint Louis. He's the thirty fourth underclassmen to get picked in my 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
Previous Pick: Cole Johnson, G, SMU
FC Cincinnati: Joel Sangwa, D, Akron
- FC Cincinnati already has a strong back line. One more center back for insurance just in case Matt Miazga gets another red card wouldn't hurt.
- The 6-1 168 lb Joel Sangwa is a fast athletic center back who can create plays for his teammates while neutralizing opponents on defense. Joel Sangwa had 1 goal, 2 assists, 4 points, and helped Akron record 10 shutouts in 2023. One of those ten shutouts was against Notre Dame, who entred the 2023 ACC Tournament as the top seed in the ACC after a 0-0 draw with Akron.
- I've seen Joel Sangwa mocked in the first round. I had him in the third round of my intial final mock, but opted to move him into the second round.
Previous Pick: Griffin Roach, D, Boston University
LAFC: Jayden Hibbert, G, Connecticut
- LAFC could draft a goalie at some point. Bryan Dowd is my only first round goalie. Trace Alphin just came off the board, and somehow Jayden Hibbert the youngest goalie in the 2024 MLS Super Draft is available in the late second round. Now LAFC can develop him behind Maxime Crepeau and Hibbert may succeed down the road in this scenario since Jayden Hibbert has a high ceiling despite being raw.
- The 6-2 165 lb Jayden Hibbert plays the 1 at goalie for Connecticut. Jayden Hibbert doubled his shutout total from 2 shutouts in 6 starts as a freshman in 2022 to 4 shutouts in 14 starts as a sophomore in 2023. Jayden Hibbert also improved his goals allowed from 10 goals in 6 starts to 9 goals allowed in 14 starts. He improved his goals against average from 1.72 to 1.27. His saves improved from 15 to 17 saves. His save percentage improved from .600 to .654 as a sophomore in 2023. Jayden Hibbert was 4-2 in 2022 and 7-6 in 2023.
- I love the intensity Jayden Hibbert plays with as he will do whatever it takes to protect the soccer ball even if it means tackling a defender like a linebacker and knocking that defender on their rear end. The 19-year-old goalie has the ceiling to develop into Connecticut's best goalie since Andre Blake if he can channel that level play which is a big if. The problem is that domineering style of play got him a red card in Connecticut's regular season finale which cost him a chance to start for Connecticut in the 2023 Big East Tournament.
- Jayden Hibbert is rawer than Wake Forest goalie Trace Alphin, but you can argue he's got more of a ceiling than Notre Dame goalie Bryan Dowd, my only goalie with a first round grade or Trace Alphin if he puts everything together. Jayden Hibbert did well enough to earn an invite to the 2023 MLS College Showcase where he performed in front of MLS Scouts leading up to the 2024 MLS Super Draft. He's the thirty fifth underclassmen to get picked in in my 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
- LAFC wouldn't have to sign Jayden Hibbert to a contract in the MLS or MLS Next until December 31, 2025 under the new MLS Draft rules that go into effect this year for the 2024 MLS Super Draft. These new rules for the 2024 MLS Super Draft give LAFC the luxury to gamble on Jayden Hibbert at pick 57.
Previous Pick: Femi Awodesu, D, Penn State
Columbus Crew: Kyle Genenbacher, D, Notre Dame
- The Columbus Crew could draft another center back for depth to push their 2022 first round pick Phillip Quinton and 2023 first round pick Xavier Zengue a center back that the Columbus Crew drafted out of Dayton in the 2023 MLS Super Draft for minutes in MLS Next in 2024. The thing is Columbus needs better fullback depth at both left back and right back which is why I have another senior right back coming off the board.
- The 5-10 182 lb Kyle Genenbacher played the 3 at right back on Notre Dame. Kyle Genebacher had 1 goal, 5 assists, 7 points, and helped Notre Dame record 11 shutouts in 20 sstarts when starting in 2023. Kyle Genenbacher is the thirty sixth underclassmen to come off my board in this 2024 MLS Mock Draft.
