2020 MLS Mock Draft: Final Mock 2 Rounds

Round 2

Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: January 9, 2020.

  1. San Jose Earthquakes: Derek Waldeck, M, Stanford

The 5-8 150 lb Derek Waldeck had 4 goals, 8 assists, and 16 points in 2019. Walden can line up at left wing, right wing, attacking midfielder, be used as a playmaker, or play physical as a defensive midfielder. He is talented, but also displays a tendency to play extremely aggressive as he got a yellow card for dinging up Clemson's Generation Adidas guy Robbie Robinson.

Derek Waldeck is a first to second round talent if I am being honest. He may end up going in the back half of the first round, so San Jose would be thrilled to get him at 27. The Earthquakes already got Haji and Rivas a year ago, and getting Derek Waldeck gives their organization more options at midfielder moving forward because Derek Waldeck can play defensive midfielder in this situation.

  2. Nashville S.C.: Tanner Dietrich, M, Clemson

Nashville S.C. gets the man who led Clemson with 10 assists. He did not play in the College Cup game where Clemson was eliminated by Stanford. Re-uniting Robbie Robinson with Tanner Dietrich will do wonders.

Previous Pick: Rey Ortiz, M, Portland

  3. F.C. Cincinnati: Nkossi Burgess, D, Seattle

F.C. Cincinnati gets the 6-4 185 lb Nkossi Burgess here since he provides this second year franchise with a center back who could be a steal like Kamal Miller in last years draft. Stanford needed penalty kicks to beat Seattle. I loved Sergio Rivas and had him as high as twelve. Seattle had 10 shutouts this season including shutout draws over good programs that made the 2018 College Cup Semifinals such as Denver and Indiana. Also Seattle forced Utah Valley and Stanford into penalty kicks this year. Burgess is a second round sleeper that may creep into the back half of the first round.

Previous Pick: Jeremy Kelly, M, North Carolina

  4. New England Revoultion: Gideon Betz, M, Campbell

The 6-0 183 lb Gideon Betz played defensive midfielder, center back, and right back in 2019 with Campbell. Campbell had 10 shutouts on the back line thanks to Betz including one over UNC Wilmington. The Fighting Camels even defeated James Madison in the opening round of the 2019 College Cup so Gideon Betz may be a sleeper to keep an eye on.

Previous Pick: Jack Hallahan, F, Michigan

  5. Orlando City S.C.: Simon Lekressner, D, California

Orlando City S.C. has the center backs and the right back. Now they get the 5-8 155 lb Simon Lekressner to be a guy who they hope fills that weak spot at left back.

  6. Vancouver Whitecaps: Phillip Goodrum, F, UNC Wilmington

Speaking of UNC Wilmington, their best player gets picked here. The 6-0 170 lb Phillip Goodrum had 12 goals, 4 assists, and 28 points in 2018. Goodrum had 11 goals, 4 assists, and 26 points in 2019.

Previous Pick: Tanner Dietrich, M, Clemson

  7. Toronto F.C.: Blake Frischknecht, F, Utah Valley

Toronto F.C. gets a second striker to compliment Jose Altidore here. The 6-3 195 lb Blake Frischknecht had 13 goals, 1 assist, and 27 points in 2019. Fischknecht is making a strong case to be a second round pick with his production in 2019.

Previous Pick: Nkossi Burgess, D, Seattle

  8. Houston Dynamo: Simon Waever, D, Indiana

The 5-11 155 lb Simon Waever is from Denmark. Waever helped Indiana record 10 shutouts in 2019 after playing at Evansville for three seasons. Waever can play left back or right back with his versatility and is considered one the top outside backs in the 2020 MLS Super Draft. He helped Indiana rally to win the Big 10 Championship late in the year so his stock may be up now as a result.

  9. Seattle Sounders: Cherif Dieye, M, Louisville

The Seattle Sounders grab the best player on the board in the second round. Cherif Dieye was Louisville's best prospect in 2019. The Sounders already have Tucker Bone out of Air Force from the 2019 MLS Super Draft.

Previous Pick: Gideon Betz, M, Campbell

  10. Chicago Fire F.C.: Miguel Yuste, F, Yale

The 5-8 146 lb team captain of the Yale Bulldogs soccer team had 8 goals, 4 assists, and 20 points in 2019. He's small, but extremely skilled since Yale shutout Connecticut in Mens Soccer 3-0 earlier this season. Yuste also scored both games in a 2-0 home win over Stony Brook.

Previous Pick: Phillip Goodrum, F, UNC Wilmington

  11. Colorado Rapids: Elliott Panicco, G, Charlotte

With Tim Howard retiring, its time for Colorado to get a successor to Clint Irwing. Elliott Panicco was a guy I spoted as a potential sleeper in the 2018 and 2019 MLS Super Drafts for a Generation Adidas candidate. He ended up returning to school and is one of the better senior goalies in this class so Colorado gets Panicco at this pick.

  12. San Jose Earthquakes: Danny Reynolds, D, UNC Wilmington

San Jose gets a defender here. The 6-1 183 lb Danny Reynolds transferred from Louisville to UNC Wilmington

  13. Orlando City S.C.: Niklas Brodocki, F, Central Arkansas

Orlando City S.C. gets the leading goal scorer in 2017. Niklas Brodocki had 12 goals as a freshman in 2016, led the NCAA with 17 goals as a sophomore, and had 11 goals this year as a senior. He's consistent enough to warrant a tryout on Orlando City S.C. this late in the second round.

Previous Pick: Blake Frischknecht, F, Utah Valley

  14. F.C. Dallas: Dayonn Harris, F, Connecticut

F.C. Dallas takes the best player on the board. Dayonn Harris had 2 goals, 9 assists, and 13 points in 2019.

  15. New York Red Bulls: Felician Dumas, M, Notre Dame

The 6-0 171 lb Felician Dumas led Notre Dame in assists each of the past three seasons. He also has experience in every defensive role whether it be left back, center back, right back, defensive midfielder, left winger, or right winger. Dumas is a player you can plug in on the wing, as a defensive midfielder, a center back, or outside at fullback.

Previous Pick: Cherif Dieye, M, Louisville

  16. D.C. United: Rey Ortiz, M, Portland

D.C. United gets a midfielder for depth here. Rushing Ortiz into a starting role just because he is the best player on the board is the worst thing this organization can do.

Previous Pick: Sergi Nus, D, Duke

  17. New England Revolution: Jack Skahan, M, North Carolina

New England gets another midfielder for depth. Jack Skahan is the best player on the board at this point.

Previous Pick: Miguel Yuste, F, Yale

  18. Orlando City S.C.: Jeremy Kelly, M, North Carolina

Orlando City S.C. grabs a senior with experience. Kelly played in the 2017 College Cup as a sophomore. He has the attitude and sportsmanship you want.

Previous Pick: Niklas Brodocki, F, Central Arkansas

  19. Los Angeles Galaxy: Wallis Lapsley, G, UC Davis

The Los Angeles Galaxy draft a goalie here. Wallis Lapsley is considered a first round prospect by some experts. Los Angeles grabs the best player on the board as a future project here.

Previous Pick: Felician Dumas, M, Notre Dame

  20. Real Salt Lake: Younis Boudadi, D, Creighton

Real Salt Lake drafts the best player on the board. They get a guy from Creighton at 46 that can play in an outside back role.

Previous Pick: Teddy Chaouche, M, Charlotte

  21. Columbus Crew S.C.: Brandon Willamson, M, Duke

The 5-10 135 lb Brandon Williamson is considered Duke's best prospect by some experts. Columbus takes him here hoping for premium value.

Previous Pick: Luka Prpa, M, Marquette

  22. New York City F.C.: Sergi Nus, D, Duke

The 6-2 185 lb Sergi Nus is one of my favorite seniors in the country. Nus dominated at Virginia in 2017 before an injury in 2018 where he missed the entire season. Nus transferred to Duke and showed flashes of his stellar play in 2017. I'm not sure why Duke did not play him against Pittsburgh, but he is humble and has good morals. He's just as disciplined as any defender in this draft, plus with his experience you could be getting a huge steal like with what Orlando City S.C. got when they landed Kamal Miller as a starter in the second round last year.

Previous Pick: Younes Boudadi, D, Creighton

  23. Columbus Crew S.C.: Patrick Seagrist, D, Marquette

Columbus takes the left back on Marquette here. Patrick Seagrist provides great value at this spot.

Previous Pick: Tiago Mendoca, M, Providence

  24. LAFC: Luka Prpa, M, Marquette

The 5-10 165 Luka Prpa is one of the better midfielders in this draft. LAFC can gamble on him this late in the second round.

Previous Pick: Leo Novaes, F, Saint Louis

  25. Toronto F.C.: Jack Hallahan, F, Michigan
Toronto F.C. gets the best player on the board this late in the second round. The 6-0 170 lb Jack Hallahan. Hallahan had double digit goals in 2018 before his play declined in 2019. Hallahan is described as an "Energizer Bunny" by some scouts due to his stamina on the pitch. Hallahan may not bring the goal scoring production he brought last season. He has the stamina and the heart of a top 50 prospect, so I doubt he slips past this spot. This is great value for Hallahan in the second round.

Previous Pick: Samson Sergi, F, Xavier

  26. Seattle Sounders: Paulo Pita, G, Marshall

Seattle drafts a goalie to wrap up the second round. Paulo Pita played goalie at Marshall for four years and recorded 8 shutouts in 2019 after growing up in Santos which has one of the best pro soccer teams in Brazil. Paulo Pita is a guy most have a third or fourth round grade on, but I honestly think he's the best player on the board at this point so he goes earlier than expected in this mock.

Previous Pick: Brandon Willamson, M, Duke
