Gerrit Cole dominated the top of the first inning. Yuli Gurriel hit a 2-run RBI in the bottom of the first inning which put the Houston Astros up 2-0.
Washington Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman homered in the top of the second inning. He hit the first home run of this contest off of Gerrit Cole to make it a 2-1 game.
Max Scherzer pitched a scoreless bottom of the second inning. Both pitchers stepped up in the third inning by not giving up a run.
Juan Soto hit the game-tying home run at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning. Washington took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth innning. Soto made it a 5-2 game on a 2 run RBI in the top of the fifth inning.
Max Scherzer finished the bottom of the fifth inning before getting pulled. Gerrit Cole managed to finish the top of the seventh inning before Houston pulled him.
After the seventh inning stretch, George Springer hit a home run to make 5-3. Springer also hit a double which brought in an RBI to make it a 5-4 game.
Daniel Hudson survived the bottom of the eighth inning. Sean Doolittle came in once again in the bottom of the ninth inning to get the save for the Washington Nationals.
The Washington Nationals did their part in the 2019 World Series. They stole game 1 from the Houston Astros which many did not expect them to do. If Justin Verlander has another sloppy performance on short rest in these MLB Playoffs, then Washington may end up ending this series early at Nationals Park.
