2024 WNBA Power Rankings
Lisa Donovan Last Updated: April 2, 2024.
Pheonix Mercury 0-0
- The Phoenix Mercury won a league low 9 games in 2023. Despite having Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner back, without any draft picks in the first two rounds of the 2024 WNBA Draft in what may be the most stacked draft to date, it is hard to see the Mercury doing anything this season.
Seattle Storm 0-0
- Outside of Jewell Lloyd, the Seattle Storm don't have much going for them at the moment. Seattle added Nneka Ogwumike at power forward whose spent all of her WNBA career with the Los Angeles Sparks.
Chicago Sky 0-0
- The Chicago Sky only have one scorer in their starting five that averaged over 10 points per game. Chicago lost quite a bit of key players. Look for Chicago to decline and head towards a rebuild in 2024.
Atlanta Dream 0-0
- The Eastern Conference is extremely tight right now. It's hard to say who the weakest team outside of Chicago is. Indiana is gonna be much better with Caitlin Clark, Connecticut is a center away from challenging the New York Liberty, Washington can contend with a point guard at 6, and Atlanta is also a center away from contention. Atlanta doesn't pick until the last pick in the first round of the 2024 WNBA Draft, so I'll put the Atlanta Dream in this spot for now.
Los Angeles Sparks 0-0
- Los Angeles lost their leading scorer, rebounder, and their leader in assists. Even if the Sparks hit on both first round picks in the 2024 WNBA Draft, they may fall short of the 2024 WNBA Playoffs during this transition. Even if the Sparks get in, they will be eighth or seventh seed at best and be a team that suffers an early exit from the WNBA Playoffs due to a lack of experience even with promising draft picks.
Minnesota Lynx 0-0
- The Minnesota Lynx are a point guard away from competing in the Western Conference as a consistent playoff team. Unfortunately, with Georgia Amoore entering the transfer portal, Minnesota is in a tricky spot where they can reach for Haley Van Lith or trade number seven for possibly a second 2025 first round pick.
Connecticut Sun 0-0
- The Connecticut Sun need a center to round out their starting five. Connecticut made the Conference Finals and second round of the WNBA Playoffs in 2023. Having no championships puts them at a disadvantage against other teams like the Washington Mystics who won the 2019 WNBA Title and have most of their core outside of point guard together for 2024. Indiana could also make a huge leap in 2024.
Previously Ranked: 30th
Washington Mysics
- Washington won the 2019 WNBA Finals. If the Mystics can get a good point guard at 6, this team could make one more run with Elena Delle-Donne leading the way.
Indiana Fever 0-0
- Indiana has the best long-term outlook of any Eastern Conference team. I expect them to emerge by 2025 as the undisputed challenger to the New York Liberty. The Fever have to gain more experience as a team even if Clark ends up taking the WNBA by storm next year.
Dallas Wings 0-0
- Dallas needs depth at center as well as a second starting guard. I believe if the Dallas Wings draft Angel Reese at 5 and then get a shooting guard like Chrisma Osborne out of UCLA at 9. Dallas can assert themselves as the sure fire challenger to the Las Vegas Aces in the Western Conference after making the second round of the 2023 WNBA Playoffs only to get swept by Las Vegas. Dallas can maybe win a game or two in a best of 5 series against Las Vegas with two impact players in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
New York Liberty 0-0
- New York has their entire starting five that averaged over 10 points a game from last year. Something tells me they put everything together this year and win the 2024 WNBA Finals. Whoever the Liberty draft at 11 will get to learn under five quality starters. Breanna Stewart took a paycut to keep this team together and Sabrina Ionescu is also a really good complimentary star player to Stewart.
Las Vegas Aces 0-0-0
- Las Vegas has their starting five back for next season. As long as the Aces maintain this starting five and have Becky Hammond as head coach, the Aces will remain the team to beat in the WNBA. Kelsey Plum, A'ja Wilson, and Jackie Young were all number one picks from 2017-2019 with Plum being the San Antonio Stars final draft pick before San Antonio relocated to Las Vegas to become the Ace's. Candace Parker is on this team too.
