San Francisco Giants 2016 Season Preview

Madison Bumgarner had to carry the San Francisco Giants the past two years. Bumgarner is finally getting the assistance he deserves in 2016.

San Francisco Giants Batting Lineup Summary: San Francisco has a solid combination of 5 tool bats, base stealers, batting average pros, and home run hitters.

Buster Posey is still the heart of this batting lineup. Center fielder Denard Span is an emerging lead off bat. Hunter Pence had a down year in 2015, but he should rebound in 2016.

Joe Panik had a .312 batting average last season. Panik displayed an impressive batting average, yet he's batting seventh in this lineup.

Madison Bumgarner, Jeff Samardzjia, Jake Peavy were surprisingly effective when batting last year. Some of the pitchers in the Giants rotation are just as good with their bats as they are on the mound which makes the Giants a very effective hitting team.

San Francisco Giants Starting Rotation Summary: Bumgarner and Cueto are the heart of the rotation. Samardzjia regressed a lot with the White Sox in 2015. Jake Peavy and Matt Cain have regressed quite a bit over the past three years, but round out this starting rotation.

It feels like the Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants all have quality #1 and #2 starters. All 3 teams have question marks with their 3-5 starters. The NL West team with the most quality production from their 3-5 starters will probably be the team that wins the NL West.

San Francisco Giants Bullpen Summary: The San Francisco Giants have a pretty deep bullpen. Santiago Casilla had 38 saves in 2015. All 4 middle relievers, set up pitcher Sergio Romo, and closer Santiago Casilla have ERA's of under 3.00. If Romo gets injured, middle reliever Hunter Strickland can come in as a set up pitcher. Strickland had 10 relief appearances in the set up role last season and with his experience, the Giants have quality depth in the bullpen.

Prediction: San Francisco can be a playoff team if their 3-5 starters can pitch 6 innings along with Bumgarner and Cueto. Arizona and Los Angeles will provide quality competition in the NL West. I still believe the Giants will win this division.

The Giants won the World Series in every even numbered year since 2010 with three championships in 2010, 2012, and 2014. That trend may continue in 2016.

I think the Mets and Cubs will get the top 2 seeds in the National League. The Giants will be the 3 seed with the Cardinals and Dodgers playing in the wild card game. The Dodgers will reach the NLDS only to lose to the Mets while the Giants defeat the 2 seed Cubs only to lose to the Mets in the NLCS.
