The New York Liberty went 32-8 in 2023, but can they improve on that in 2024? The New York Liberty have Courtney Vandersloot at point guard, Sabrina Ionescu at shooting guard, Betnijah Laney-Hamilton at small forward, Jonquel Jones at power forward, and Breanna Stewart at center. The New York Liberty have the best starting five in the WNBA entering the 2024 WNBA Season with Candace Parker retiring for the Las Vegas Aces.
Courtney Vandersloot had 10.5 points per game, 8.1 assists per game, and 3.5 rebounds per game in 2023 at point guard on the New York Liberty. Sabrina Ionescu had 17 points per game, 5.6 rebounds per game, 5.4 assists per game, 1 steal per game, and challenged Steph Curry to a three point contest during the 2024 NBA All Star Weekend as the shooting guard on the New York Liberty in 2023.
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton had 12.8 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per game, and 2.4 assists per game in 2023 at small forward on the New York Liberty. Jonquel Jones had 11.3 points per game, 8.4 rebounds per game, and 1.8 assists per game as the power forward on the New York Liberty in 2023.
Breanna Stewart had 23 points per game, 9.3 rebounds per game, and 3.8 assists per game in 2023 at center on the New York Liberty. Breanna Stewart won 2023 WNBA MVP and took a paycut to keep the New York Liberty starting five in tact for the 2024 WNBA Season. Breanna Stewart won 2 WNBA Finals with the Seattle Storm in 2018 and 2020 before signing with the New York Liberty in January of 2023.
Courtney Vandersloot and Breanna Stewart enter contract years. Sabrina Ionescu, Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, and Jonquel Jones are under contract until 2026. Breanna Stewart and Courtney Vandersloot will cost $450,000 in cap space and New York only has $436,000 for 2025 in cap space at the moment, so one of those two will probably go somewhere else once the 2025 WNBA Free Agency Period starts next season. My guess is Stewart ends up getting retained with Vandersloot testing Free Agency and Marquesha Davis, the New York Liberty's 2024 first round pick taking over at point guard in 2025.
