New England Patriots Free Agency Recap

New England got Cordarrelle Patterson as a slot receiver in Free Agency. They also got Danny Shelton at defensive tackle via trade. New England signed Adrian Clayborn as a 4-3 right end. New England also got Jason McCourty the brother of Devin McCourty to bolster their defense.

New England Patriots Draft Recap

The New England Patriots drafted Isaiah Wynn out of Georgia in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. They also drafted his teammate Sony Michel at running back. Wynn and Michel were room mates at Georgia. Wynn is out for the season because Belichick opted to play his starters in the first half versus the Philadelphia Eagles. Michel is injured, but not out for the year at the moment. This felt like New England's worst draft in years.

New England Patriots Quarterback Summary: Tom Brady is the Patriots starting quarterback. Now Brian Hoyer is the backup. Josh McDaniels returns. He's the offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach.

New England Patriots Running Back Summary: The Patriots have James White as a starter in 1 RB sets. James White and Rex Burkhead are both starters in 2 RB sets. You also got Jeremy Hill, Brandon Bolden, Mike Gillislee, and Sony Michel as backups for depth. Noah Develin is a great fullback too.

Running backs coach Ivan Fears is one of the best running backs coaches in the NFL. He has a lot to work with having at least six running backs that can run the football effectively.

New England Patriots Wide Receiver Summary: Julian Edelman will be suspended for the first four games. Chris Hogan is the number one target for the first four games. Cordarrelle Patterson and Phillip Dorsett will compliment Hogan in the first four games until Edelman returns. The Patriots went from being stacked at wide receiver to being pretty thin at it with some of the cuts they made at the wide receiver position.

Chad O'Shea was hired by the Patriots in 2009. Chad O'Shea has been an awesome wide receivers coach for the New England Patriots during his tenure in New England.

New England Patriots Tight End Summary: The New England Patriots use two tight end sets quite frequently. This year will be no different with the leagues best tight end Rob Gronkowski plus Dwayne Allen. Both tight ends are great. Nick Caley returns as the tight ends coach in 2018.

New England Patriots Offensive Line Summary: Right now the Patriots have Trent Brown at left tackle, Joe Thuney at left guard, David Andrews at center, Shaq Mason at right guard, and Marcus Cannon at right tackle. New England is thinner then usual at offensive tackle with Isaiah Wynn out for the year now that Nate Solder is gone. I like Trent Brown, but I'm not sure how he will do as a left tackle being Tom Brady's blindside.

Dante Scarnecchia enters year two as the Patriots offensive line coach in his second stint with the team. The Patriots thrived with Scarnecchia's pass blocking scheme the last two years. Now New England has a glaring weakness at left tackle that teams can exploit in order to get pressure on Tom Brady.

New England is going to be tested. We may see them decline slightly in some categories. New England should still be a top 10 team in points scored, total yards, and passing yards even though they may not be a top 5 team withiout a left tackle or Julian Edelman for the first four games.

New England Patriots Defensive Line Summary: Adrian Clayborn will start at 4-3 right end with Trey Flowers starting at 4-3 left end. Derek Rivers is being used as a 4-3 right end for depth behind Adrian Clayborn and Deatrich Wise Jr. is being used a 4-3 left end for depth behind Trey Flowers.

Malcolm Brown and Danny Shelton will start at 4-3 defensive tackle. Lawrence Guy and Vincent Valentine provide great depth t 4-3 defensive tackle.

Brendan Daly is one of the better defensive line coaches in the NFL. He has experience coaching the Minnesota Vikings defensive line as well as the New England Patriots defensive line.

New England Patriots Linebacker Summary: Dont'a Hightower will start at 4-3 right outside linebacker. Elandon Roberts will start at 4-3 middle linebacker. Kyle Van Noy will start at 4-3 left outside linebacker. The Patriots are very thin with linebacker depth. They don't have the linebacker depth they had a year ago.

The Patriots have thwo coaches that specialize in developing linebackers. Head coach Bill Belichick and linebackers coach Brian Flores. These three really know how to develop linebackers. Flores has called the defensive plays during the preseason despite New England not having a defensive coordinator. You can say that Flores is the unofficial defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.

New England Patriots Defensive Backs Summary: The Patriots have Stephon Gilmore as the field cornerback. Eric Rowe is going to compliment Gilmore as the boundary cornerback. Essentially New England has two #1 cornerbacks starting. Patrick Chung is expected to start at strong safety. Devin McCourty will start at free safety.

The Patriots have incredible depth at cornerback. Jason McCourty is a good nickel cornerback. You also got Jonathan Jones as a dime cornerback. Cyrus Jones their 2016 second round pick plays quarter cornerback.

New England has Duron Harmon as a backup free safety and Jordan Richards as a backup strong safety. New England's secondary lost Malcolm Butler. It's still a very good unit and should be the back bone of the defense once again in 2018.

The Patriots have one of the best safeties coaches in Steve Belichick the son of Bill Belichick. Their cornerback coach Steve Boyer is the defensive backs coach.

The Patriots should finish in the top 30 in sacks until Derek Rivers starts. I think New England can be a top 5 defense in points allowed for fewest points allowed. New England is a top 25 defense in points allowed. Their run defense can be a top 10 unit if D'Onta Hightower stays healthy. It could also be one of the worst units in the league if he gets injured again. I see New England having a top 10 pass defense without Malcolm Butler. It's still a good unit, but you can argue it won't be a top 5 pass defense without Butler.

New England Patriots Special Teams Summary: Stephen Gostkowski will start at kicker. Gostkowski is arguably one of the two best kickers in the NFL along with Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens. Punter Ryan Allen will start for the Patriots. Cordarrelle Patterson will be the kick returner and punt returner for the New England Patriots. Joe Judge is back at special teams coordinator as well.

New England Patriots Worst Case Scenario: The New England Patriots go 11-5. They lose in the wild card round.

New England Patriots Best Case Scenario: New England goes 15-1 and wins Super Bowl 53. New England will always be in the Super Bowl conversation as long as Brady and Belichick are there.

New England Patriots 2018 Projected Record (11-5): New England has a difficult schedule this year. They also have a much weaker offensive line.

I have New England winning this division at 11-5. I have Miami finishing second in the AFC East at 5-11. New York finished third in my NFC East projections at 3-13. Buffalo is most likely to be the bottom feeder of this division again after breaking their playoff drought. I have them at 2-14 with the NFL's worst record.

New England should reach the Divisional round of the AFC Playoffs. I don't see them getting to Super Bowl 53 unless they avoid Pittsburgh or Jacksonville. I have them beating the Los Angeles Chargers in the wild card round before losing in the divisional round.
