Sky News WNBA: The Chicago Sky hope to keep their playoff streak alive after barely making the 2023 WNBA Playoffs as the eight seed last year.

Chicago Sky 2024 Season Preview

Mariana Mabrey was the only returning player on the Chicago Sky to average over 10 points per game in 2023.

The Chicago Sky went 18-24 in 2023. The Chicago Sky have Mariana Mabrey at point guard, Angel Reese at power forward, and a center combination featuring Elizabeth Williams as the starting center and Kamilla Cardoso the third overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft as the backup center to Williams.

The Chicago Sky will be one of the best defensive teams in the league with three quality front court players. The offense will depend heavily on Mariana Mabrey and Angel Reese with those two starting and Cardoso coming off the bench to start the season.

Mariana Mabrey averaged 15 points per game, 3.7 rebounds per game, and 3.6 assists per game in 2023. Mariana Mabrey is under contract until 2026. Elizabeth Williams enters a contract year and I bet she starts this year with Kamilla Cardoso taking over in 2025. Chicago still needs a shooting guard and small forward to round out this starting five.

The Chicago Sky will be in a rebuild this year and that could end in 2025 with a good free agent and a good draft pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, but Chicago's rebuild could also last until 2027 if they lose Mariana Mabrey to Free Agency in 2026. Chicago needs to get a starting shooting guard and small forward to compliment point guard Mariana Mabrey, power forward Angel Reese, and center Kamilla Cardoso. Even if both Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso pan out, Chicago is not in a great spot as they have the Dallas Wings 2025 first round pick which will most likely be in the 7-12 range as well as their own first round pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft.

I expect the Chicago Sky to be a bottom two team in 2024. The Dallas Wings could end up getting Paige Buekers because of the trade they made with the Chicago Sky where they swapped 2025 first round picks with the Chicago Sky which means the Sky only go as far as Mabrey, Reese, Williams, and Cardoso take them in 2024.
