Buffalo Bills Free Agency Recap

The Bills got a #4 receiver in Andre Holmes who they are gonna try at the slot. Buffalo also got safeties Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde who are both borderline starters in my eyes.

Buffalo Bills Draft Recap

Buffalo got Tre'Davious White, Zay Jones, and Dion Dawkins with their first three picks. I talked about how Buffalo got two immediate starters in the first two rounds of the 2016 NFL Draft. They did the same thing in the first two rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Buffalo Bills Quarterback Summary: Buffalo has Tyrod Taylor returning as a starting quarterback. Nate Peterman will be the backup now with Cardale Jones being traded to the Chargers. Rick Dennison is a much better offensive coordinator than Greg Roman he had success with Houston under Gary Kubiak was a quarterback coach when Kubiak was an offensive coordinator in Baltimore, and was also Denver's offensive coordinator. David Culley was a wide receivers coach his entire career. Buffalo made Culley their quarterbacks coach which does concern me a bit.

Buffalo Bills Running Back Summary: Buffalo should continue giving LeSean McCoy the football. McCoy will get a majority of the carries once again. Kelly Skipper is a huge downgrade from Anthony Lynn since Lynn became a head coach where as Skipper got fired from the Jacksonville Jaguars as their running backs coach.

Buffalo Bills Wide Receiver Summary: Jordan Matthews and Zay Jones are the two receivers in this lineup that I trust. Andre Holmes was a backup last year so I'm sort of concerned about how he will perform.

Phil McGeoghan is the wide receivers coach at East Carolina. I had a first round grade on Zay Jones so don't be surprised if Jones ends up having a huge fantasy year in 2017. McGeoghan could be good, but he could also end up being terrible. We will see since coaches who jump from the College ranks to the NFL can succeed or fail depending on the situation they are in.

Buffalo Bills Tight End Summary: Charles Clay is the only quality tight end on Buffalo's depth chart. Buffalo's starting tight end needs to step up this season and take some pressure off of Watkins.

Buffalo Bills Offensive Line Summary: Cordy Glenn is a premium blindside at left tackle. Richie Incognito is a quality left guard. Eric Wood has been a reliable center for years since the Bills drafted him in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Right guard John Miller showed he could step up right away. Dion Dawkins is expected to start at right tackle as a rookie. Juan Castillo was an offensive line coach with the Baltimore Ravens the last three years. He is also going to be a running game coordinator calling the running plays during Buffalo's practice sessions.

Buffalo ranked 10th in points per game, 16th in yards per game, 30th in passing yards per game, and 1st in rushing yards per game. Buffalo led the NFL in rushing yards for the second year in a row.

Buffalo Bills Defensive Line Summary: Buffalo will have Jerry Hughes at 4-3 right end, Kyle Williams at 4-3 defensive tackle, Marcel Dareus at 4-3 defensive tackle, and Shaq Lawson at 4-3 left end. Mike Waufle was a defensive line coach with the Rams for five years where he got the best out of Robert Quinn, Michael Brockers, Aaron Donald, and Chris Long.

Buffalo Bills Linebacker Summary: Ramon Humber is playing 4-3 right outside linebacker. This move baffles me. You got Preston Brown starting at 4-3 middle linebacker with Lorenzo Alexander starting at 4-3 left outside linebacker. Reggie Ragland and Matt Milano provide great depth at 4-3 middle linebacker and 4-3 left outside linebacker.

The weak side linebacker spot will be the weakness of this linebacking core. The middle and strong side will be strengths though.

Head coach Sean McDermott specializes with developing linebackers. Linebacker coach Bob Babich also specializes in this department.

Buffalo Bills Defensive Backs Summary: Buffalo has rookie Tre'Davious White at field cornerback with Kevon Seymour at boundary cornerback. Micah Hyde is starting at strong safety with Jordan Poyer starting at free safety.

Buffalo isn't as deep as I thought they were last year. The Bills were sort of disappointing in this department, but Leslie Frazier specializes in developing defensive backs so his coaching compliments McDermott well. Gill Byrd was the cornerbacks coach with Tampa Bay until 2015. He gets back into coaching after a year off so with Buffalo's defensive backs coach having little experience with coaching safeties, that's another thing that makes their safety play suspect against tight ends like Rob Gronkowski.

Buffalo has a middle of the pack defense. The Bills finished 8th in sacks last season after having 31 in 2015. The Bills also finished 17th in points allowed. Buffalo was 19th in total yards, 6th in pass defense, and 29th in run defense due the suspension of Marcel Dareus at the beginning of the year along with injuries on the defensive side of the ball.

Buffalo Bills Special Teams Summary: Steven Hauschka is a huge upgrade over Dan Carpenter. I'm not sold on Colton Schmidt at punter, but unlike Dan Carpenter he kept his job. Brandon Tate is expected to be the kick returner and punt returner.

Danny Crossman returns as the special teams coordinator. I am pretty sure Crossman was the only coach on this entire staff to keep his job from last season.

Buffalo Bills Worst Case Scenario: The Bills post another losing record. This results in them disappointing their fans.

Buffalo Bills Best Case Scenario: Buffalo starts 6-0 and this allows them to go 10-6 with their schedule and somehow makes the 2018 NFL Playoffs. This would come as a huge surprise.

Buffalo Bills 2017 Projected Record (7-9): Buffalo should go 7-9. I had them at 8-8. Once they traded Sammy Watkins and Ronald Darby, I docked them a win.
