Houston Dynamo 2016 Season Preview

Posted By: Chris Ransom on 2/6/2016

The Houston Dynamo still have Will Bruin who led the team with 11 goals in 2015. You also got Giles Barnes and Rob Lovejoy both returning. Omar Cummings left the Dynamo in 2015 and this year the Dynamo lost Chandler Hoffman who now plays for Louisville City F.C. in the United Soccer League

Houston traded midfielder Brad Davis to Sporting Kansas City. They are getting Christian Maidana at midfielder to be a playmaker and an attacking midfielder. Maidana was one of the league leaders in assists for the Philadelphia Union last season. Andrew Wenger will play right wing across from Giles Barnes.

Left back DaMarcus Beasley is the only returning starter on defense. Beasley played in 4 FIFA World Cups in a row in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014. Beasley is training for the 2018 FIFA World Cup despite being 33-years-old. The Dynamo lost 3 of their four center backs in Jermaine Taylor, Kofi Sarkodie, and A.J. Cochran. Right back Corey Ashe is also gone. The Dynamo went out and found some replacements. Spanish players David Rocha and Agus join this roster with Rocha at defensive midfielder and Agus at center back. Sebastian Ibehaga a four year starter as a center back at Duke joins the Dynamo at center back after spending a year in Europe. The team also brought in Tulsa center back Bradley Bourgeois as a home grown player. Jalil Anibaba, a right back from Sporting Kansas City joins the Dynamo.

Houston needed to bring in a goalie. The decision to bring in Calle Brown from the Pittsburgh Riverhounds may pay off as Brown led Virginia to the 2014 College Cup and then led the Riverhounds to the playoffs as a rookie.

Prediction: The Dynamo may have a more explosive offense than last year. They don't have the same depth on defense though and they lost a couple of backup forwards. How their free agents on defense and how Calle Brown plays in 2016 will decide how good the Dynamo end up being. The Dynamo could end up with a top 3 draft pick or they could end up making the playoffs. This is another tough team to assess. I'll say they do slightly better than last year, but still end up missing the playoffs in a deep Western Conference by one spot.
