2016 MLS Combine: Day 2 Recap

Posted By: Chris Ransom on 1/10/2016

The two games at Day 2 of the 2016 MLS Combine took place. First up was Team Control VS Team X. Then the second game featured Team Ace VS Team Chaos.

Team Control VS Team X Game Recap

Eric Verso started for Team Control. Team X did not have left back Brandon Vincent and moved Joshua Yaro to right back where he struggled in the first half. Yaro got benched in the first half, but he returned to center back in the second half and did much better there.

Verso put Team Control up 1-0 and he got his second assist of the 2016 MLS Combine. You really cannot blame an MLS team if they spend a late first round pick on Eric Verso with his emergence at the 2016 MLS Combine.

Team Control led 1-0 at halftime. Tyler David dominated once again at right back. David may sneak into the late first round. Center back Tony Alfaro of Cal State Dominguez Hills also did well in the first half. Alfaro has tremendous size at 6-3 204 lbs along with outstanding kicking power on his shots. Alfaro had 5 goals, 6 assists, and 16 points in 2015 as a center back which is pretty good. Alfaro looks like an early second round pick at this point.

North Florida right winger Alex Morrell showed great promise in this game putting Team Control up 2-0.

As for Syracuse's players, Julian Buescher got injured in Day 1 of the 2016 MLS Combine. Buescher is done for the entire MLS Combine. Ben Polk put Team X back in the game with a 2-2 tie. Joshua Yaro did a good job passing the ball to Polk to get an assist by distancing himself at center back.

Yaro had more success. Joshua Yaro won a one-on-one matchup with North Carolina midfielder Omar Holness. Yaro should still be the #1 pick in the 2016 MLS Super Draft despite his struggles earlier in the first half today.

Timo Pitter of Creighton may fall to 18 or 19 in the first round of the 2016 MLS Super Draft. Princeton forward Thomas Sanner scored off of the bench today. Sanner could be a good forward for depth for a team in the MLS.

Wade Hamilton is not an MLS goalie. Connor Sparrow may be a good backup, but he's not gonna be a reliable starter after giving up two goals to Team X.

This game ended in a 2-2 tie. Both Day 1 winners ended their second game with a tie. If Brandon Vincent had played the result may have been different.

Team Ace VS Team Chaos Game Recap

This was a defensive game for the first half. Liam Doyle scored an assist from Nico Brett on a header. Robert Morris's forward had an impressive showing today getting an assist and showing the versatility to start on the wing as Brett started Day 2 of the 2016 MLS Combine at right wing for Team Chaos. Doyle did well on defense and has cemented himself as a late first round pick barring an injury on Day 3 of the 2016 MLS Combine.

Justin Bilyeu looked good at center back on Day 2 of the 2015 MLS Combine. The fact that Bilyeu has the versatility to play both center back and left back like former teammate Matt Polster could get Bilyeu pushed into the second round.

Cole Seiler was a late first pick heading into the Combine. Seiler has been okay, but not great. Seiler came in off the bench in game 1, but started at center back in game 2. Seiler got benched in the first half who got a Yellow Card, but he came back in during the second half since Seiler was too aggressive. I think Liam Doyle may be better than both Kyle Fisher and Seiler after how he played today for Team Chaos. At the same time, I still expect Fisher to be the first of those three center backs drafted.

Team Chaos won 2-1. Team Ace sat out Zach Carroll for the second game. That makes you wonder what happened. Team Ace didn't have a good showing on defense from Taylor Washington who struggled at left back once again. Sven Lissek gave up 2 goals in a loss.

I'll be interviewing Sven Lissek on my podcast this Wednesday at 1 PM EST. Lissek needs to have a strong Day 3 after having a solid day. The only two goals he allowed were goals on a header and a free kick. When shots came his way from passes, he recognized those saves and made some acrobatic plays with his stealth gloves.

Team Chaos goes to 1-1-0 while Team Ace falls to 0-2-1. Team Control and Team X are still unbeaten with one day left. Team Chaos will face Team X and Team Ace will face Team control on Day 3 of the 2016 MLS Combine.

The MLS prospects will be saving their best for last on Tuesday. We'll find out what happens then. This week will be huge with Day 3 of the 2016 MLS Combine on Tuesday before 3 consecutive soccer podcasts on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at noon.
