Colorado Rapids 2016 Season Preview

Posted By: Chris Ransom on 2/2/2016

Forward DeShorn Brown was a difference maker. He signed with another team overseas prior to the start of 2015. The Rapids failed to find a forward that can replace him long-term in the 2016 MLS Super Draft which is the biggest reason why this team will remain irrelevant. Not having DeShorn Brown was a huge curveball because I presumed he'd be with the Rapids in 2015. To make matters worse, both of the other Rapids starting forwards left the team in Free Agency and the Rapids did not bring in a replacement at forward

Colorado has an array of midfielders Attacking midfielder Dillon Powers led the Rapids with 5 goals and 6 assists in 2015. The addition of Marco Pappa at left wing from the Seattle Sounders will take some pressure off of Dillon Powers. This misfielding group should take the next step on both offense and defense with Pablo Masteroni as head coach.

Grant Van De Casteele was captain of the Notre Dame soccer team that beat Maryland to win the 2013 College World Cup. Grant Van De Casteele barely saw any action last season, but he got demoted to the Rochester Rhinos in the North American Soccer League. Defensive midfielder Jared Watts is going to anchor this defense. Axel Sjoberg did a good job at center back as a rookie. Colorado also lost their right back to the Chicago Fire.

Colorado got Zack McMath from the Philadelphia Union on a loan in 2015. McMath became a full time member of the Rapids after Colorado traded their 2017 second round pick to the Union. Their other goalie Clint Irwin got traded to the Colorado Rapids.

Prediction: I said the Rapids could have the third worst record and worst record in the Western Conference as a worst case scenario. I thought this team would be seventh in the Western Conference, but the Rapids fell apart after Brown left the team and even did worse than I thought in 2015.

The Rapids have some good core pieces in place, but still need a striker before they can compete which is why I'm predicting they get the worse MLS record in 2016. I said the Montreal Impact would have the worst overall record followed by the Fire in 2015 so I could be wrong.

A guy like Rutgers forward Jason Wright in the 2017 MLS Super Draft with the second overall pick would solve this teams problem at striker. There were rumors the Rapids would get a forward from Mexico which is one of the reasons they traded the second overall pick in the 2016 MLS Super Draft as well as rumors about the team getting Tim Wright from Team USA at goalie. Neither rumor came to fruition. I got Tim Kubel going first overall to Atlanta United F.C. with Wright going second to Colorado in 2017 this time around as the Rapids will learn their lesson from dealing the #2 pick in the 2016 MLS Super Draft.
