Sporting Kansas City 2016 Season Preview

Posted By: Chris Ransom on 2/16/2016

Dom Dwyer went from 22 goals to 12 goals. Dwyer still led the team in goals despite the drop off. Midfielder Benny Failhaiber had 10 goals and led the team with 15 assists. Not only is Failhaiber returning, but assist man Brad Evans is joining Sporting Kansas City thanks to a trade with the Houston Dynamo.

Krisztian Nemeth had 10 goals as a secondary striker. Nemeth transferred to Al Gharfara S.C. Justin Mapp also joined Sporting Kansas City and became the first Free Agent to sign with Sporting Kansas City as the MLS introduced a Collective Bargaining Agreement for teams in 2015. Veteran Graham Zusi can generate assists and having him on the wing with Failhaiber and Evans only makes this midfielder group that much deadlier. Connor Hallisley should have a bigger role in year 2.

Nuno Andre Coelho is an awesome Portugese center back. He will play in the MLS with Ike Opara back at full health. Seth Sinovic also missed time with injuries in 2015. Chance Meyers is playing left back and Kevin Ellis plays right back with Matt Besler as a defensive midfielder. Jalil Anibaba is no longer with Sporting Kansas City, but Saad-Abdul Salaam can contnue to develop as a right back for depth.

Sporting Kansas City goalie Tim Meila had 82 saves on 113 shot attempts along with 8 shutouts in 2015. Meila can start for now, even though I think they can upgrade from Meila.

Prediction: Sporting Kansas City has more depth at midfield plus all of their defensive starters are back. Tim Meila showed he can be an effective goalie. Sporting Kansas City could easily make the Western Conference Finals in 2016, and I wouldn't be surprised if this team won another MLS Cup in 2016. It will come down to Nuno Andre Coelho dominating at center back along with Opara and Sinovic staying healthy though because Opara and Sinovic dealt with injuries in 2015 and those guys will be key for Sporting Kansas City in 2016 if they want to make another Cup run.
