Los Angeles Galaxy 2016 Season Preview

Posted By: Chris Ransom on 2/16/2016

The Los Angeles Galaxy had 3 players that had 10 goals and 10 assists in 2014. Robbie Keane led the Galaxy with 20 goals and 8 assists in 2015 after leading the Galaxy with 19 goals in 2014. Keane showed he could lead the Galaxy without Landon Donovan in 2015 even though the Galaxy didn't repeat as MLS Cup Champions. Gyasi Zardes had 6 goals.

Juninho did not become a double digit assist player at midfielder. Juninho is now gone and now 31-year-old Mike Magee who has not been the same since his season ending surgery in September of 2014 that caused him to only start 3 games in 2015. Mike Magee will likely play left wing with Jeff Larentowicz playing right wing. I have no doubt these guys can score goals when playing the wing, but who will set up the assists.

The Los Angeles Galaxy ignored their dire need in the 2016 MLS Super Draft, but they went after a bunch of quality defenseman Internationally overseas. Los Angeles used those picks on quality defensemen though despite losing left back Todd Dunivant and Omar Gonzalez.

Center back A.J. DeLaGarza and right back Dan Gargan return. Los Angeles Galaxy added Nigel de Jong as a defensive midfielder a Deutch defensive midfielder. They also added Jelle Van Damme, a left back from Belgium. Then they signed Ashley Cole who can play both left back and center back. Cole played with Chelsea and Roma overseas. The Galaxy may have lost a lot of core pieces, but they appear to have made up for it with these international signings.

Jaime Penedo only had 60 saves in 2015 after having 81 saves in 2014. The Galaxy brought in Dan Kennedy as a backup for depth behind Penendo.

Prediction: The Los Angeles Galaxy should return to the 2016 MLS Playoffs. It's hard to see the Galaxy winning a series until the defensive additions they signed show they can have the same impact and team chemistry as last years veterans. Los Angeles lost quite a bit of players to Free Agency so I don't see them making a run.
