2015 MLB Mock Draft: Final Mock 3 Rounds

Round 2

Posted By: Chris Ransom Last Updated: June, 8, 2015

  1. Arizona Diamondbacks: Austin Smith, P, Park Vista HS (FL)

Smith may have some growing up to do. Spending a few seasons in the minors will have him ready for the Diamondbacks eventually.

  2. Colorado Rockies: Kyle Molnar, P, Aliso Niguel HS (CA)

The Rockies use their first pick in the second round to complete the rebuilding process of finding a quality starting rotation. After drafting Molnar as your #5 pitcher all you have to do is wait for these guys to develop in th minors.

  3. Texas Rangers: Cole McKay, P, Spring Branch HS (TX)

The Texas Rangers get a high school pitcher that may end up being the best right-handed pitcher in the entire state of Texas. With Cole McKay and shortstop Travis Swanson in the system, the Texas Rangers have a bright future.

  4. Houston Astros: Luken Baker, 1B, Oak Ridge HS (TX)

Houston has nobody with a batting average of .200 playing first base. Clearly addressing first base in Round 2 is a priority for the Astros.

Luke Baker is a two-way player that can play first base or pitcher. His arm and gold glove ability will make him an outstanding fielder. Having a batting average of .500 along with a power bat that will allow him to hit line drives and home runs is another tool at his disposal. Baker needs to improve his speed, but other than that he is a pretty good prospect.

  5. Chicago Cubs: Scott Kingery, 2B, Arizona

The Chicago Cubs may have rushed Javier Baez through their system. Scott Kingery leads the Arizona Wildcats .418 batting average and is an awesome pickup at this point in the second round with his ability as a second baseman.

  6. Philadelphia Phillies: Andrew Suarez, P, Miami FL

Andrew Suarez did not sign with the Nationals after they took him in the second round. Now Suarez gets drafted by the Phillies. Philadelphia and Washington sports fans cannot stand each other. These cities are division rivals in practically every sport. NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, and MLS. Philadelphia gets the best pitcher available after passing on a pitcher in the first round.

  7. Cincinnati Reds: Skye Bolt, CF, North Carolina

The Reds add Skye Bolt. Bolt has the versatility to play left field, center field, or right field with his speed, agility, and versatility as mentioned earlier. The Reds can make this guy their center fielder for the future.

  8. Miami Marlins: Kyler Murray, SS, Allen HS (TX)

Kyler Murray is one of the best second basemen in the country and he also has the versatility to play shortstop. He is committed to play quarterback at Texas A&M. The Aggies are pretty stable at quarterback so you have to like Murray's chances of committing to baseball. Murray was the first player to play in both the Under Armour All American Football Game and the Under Armour All American Baseball Game. Your move Primetime!

  9. San Diego Padres: Kyle Cody, P, Kentucky

San Diego could use another pitcher. Kyle Cody a 6-7 240 lb pitcher out of Kentucky is still on the board. The reason Cody fell this far is because he is 3-4 in 2015 with a 5.49 ERA after entering the preseason as a top 20 pick.

Cody has one MLB pitch in his 97 mph fastball. The rest of his pitches are a work in progress and it's uncertain as to whether he will be a starter or a relief pitcher. McKenzie will need to go to Single A, then the San Antonio Missions in AA, before going to the El Paso Chihuahuas in AAA.

  10. Tampa Bay Rays: Tyler Stevenson, C, Kennesaw Mountain HS (GA)

Tampa Bay has two lousy catchers. Both catchers have batting averages of under .200. Tyler Stevenson is the unanimous #2 catcher in the draft after Chris Betts.

  11. New York Mets: Blake Trahan, SS, Louisiana Lafayette

The Mets get the top shortstop on the board with two shortstops with .239 and .233 batting averages. Blake Trahan has two consecutive seasons with a batting average of .350 of higher in 2014 and in 2015.

  12. Atlanta Braves: Tate Matheny, CF, Missouri State

The Braves take the top college bat here. Tate Matheny is the son of Mike Matheny.

  13. Milwaukee Brewers: Alex Young, P, TCU

Alex Young has a 1.46 ERA and a 9-2 record in 2015. He's only pitched 68 innings this season, but he's still an upgrade over anyone in the Brewers' starting rotation in 2015.

  14. Toronto Blue Jays: Cadyn Grenier, SS, Bishop Gorman HS (NV)

Bishop Gorman High School is one of those high schools with knack for getting players drafted into the MLB. Caden Grenier has the ability to make it as a shortstop. He is average in every skill set. Does not excel in anything, but at the same time this guy is not mediocre in anything. Perfect leadoff batter.

  15. New York Yankees: Mariano Rivera Jr., P, Iona

Mariano Rivera was a legacy with the New York Yankees. Now the Yankees draft his son.

  16. Washington Nationals: Mikey White, SS, Alabama

Washington could use a shortstop in their farm system. It took almost 60 picks, but a player from Alabama finally comes off the board.

  17. Cleveland Indians: Steven Duggar, RF, Clemson

Steven Duggar has the base stealing that center fielder Michael Bourne has. He has the versatility to play left field, center field, or right field. Duggar does his best at right fielder.

  18. Seattle Mariners: Kyle Holder, SS, San Diego

Seattle needs an upgrade at shortstop. Kyle Holder is the top shortstop left and he played next to Kris Bryant as a freshman on the Toreros when Bryant went second overall to the Chicago Cubs back in 2013.

  19. San Francisco Giants: Marcus Brakeman, P, Stanford

The #1 pitcher in Stanford's rotation is no longer Mark Appel. Brakeman would make a good prospect to develop for an impressive Giants squad that needs more pitching on their minor league teams.

  20. Pittsburgh Pirates: Tyler Nevin, 3B, Poway HS (CA)

Pedro Alvarez moved to first base. The Pirates need to bring in another infielder to develop in the minors. Tyler Nevin is the son of former #1 overall pick Phil Nevin.

  21. Oakland Athletics: John Aiello, 3B, Germantown Academy HS (PA)

Oakland could use another third baseman in their farm system. John Aiello is a steal at this point.

  22. Kansas City Royals: Cole Sands, P, North Florida Christian HS (FL)

Cole Sands is a backend starter that can be a #4 or #5 starter in the MLB. He also has the versatility to slide into a front end reliever role at either long reliever or middle reliever. His fastball maxes out at 93 mph when starting, but his fastball could probably touch 97 miles per hour if you moved Sands to the bullpen.

  23. Detroit Tigers: Gray Fenter, P, West Memphis HS (AR)

Gray Fenter is the best player here. The Tigers might lose some pitchers to free agency. Now is an opportune time to reload the rotation.

  24. St. Louis Cardinals: Thomas Szapuski, P, William Dwyer HS (FL)

The Cardinals get a pitcher to send down to their farm system. Thomas Szapuski is a guy they can take as much time with to develop. There is a possibility he has to switch to a reliever role at long reliever in the MLB.

  25. Los Angeles Dodgers: Matthew McGarry, P, Menlo-Atherton HS (CA)

I love Menlo-Atheron's logo. It should be the Memphis Grizzlies logo. In all seriousness, the Dodgers are thin on pitchers in their farm system even though one could argue they have one of the best rotations in the MLB.

  26. Baltimore Orioles: Chris Andritos, P, The Woodlands HS (TX)

Chris Andritos projects anywhere from a #5 starter to a middle reliever. The Orioles need long relievers and that seems like the best fit for Andritos at the next level.

  27. Washington Nationals: Edwin Rios, 2B, Florida International

Edwin Rios had a phenomenal freshman campaign. He batted .332 posting 20 doubles and 9 home runs. Rios also 72 hits and 52 RBI's in his freshman year at third baseman.

Rios switched to second base in 2014. His numbers dropped as he only hit 2 home runs and had a .296 batting average. One thing to love about Rios is his versatility. This is a guy that can play anywhere at infield or outfield except catcher. Third base, shortstop, second base, first base, left field, center field, right field. You name it he can plug in and play there.

The Nationals are set at most positions. Adding a player like Rios would certainly help though.

  28. Los Angeles Angels Of Anaheim: Cody Poteet, P, UCLA

Cody Poteet was the #3 pitcher in UCLA's rotation. He has a really bad ERA along with a losing record.

Best case scenario Poteet is a #3 pitcher. Worst case scenario you are getting a middle reliever. Putting this guy in your rotation as a #5 starter and moving him down to long reliever in the bullpen is what you want to do with a pitcher like this.

The Angels have a pretty strong rotation. One thing the Angels lack is a #5 starter. Poteet can fill that need.

  29. Cincinnati Reds: Tyler Ferguson, P, Vanderbilt

The Cincinnati Reds need a middle reliever. Tyler Ferguson makes a lot of sense here since he is the middle reliever on Vanderbilt's bullpen.

  30. Seattle Mariners: Joe McCarthy, RF, Virginia

The Seattle Mariners need a right fielder. Joe McCarthy is the top right fielder left and some think he's better than Clemson right fielder Steven Duggar.

  31. Minnesota Twins: Bryce Denton, 3B, Ravenwood HS (TN)

Bryce Denton would make a good third baseman for the Twins. Minnesota has done an awesome job building through the draft the last few years reloading at shortstop, pitcher, and centerfielder. Third Baseman seems like the next position for the Twins to reload at.

  32. Los Angeles Dodgers: Nolan Watson, P, Lawrence North HS (IN)

Nolan Watson is a top 50 prospect. Some have him ranked as high as 43 overall on their power rankings. To get him this late in round 2 is an absolute steal.

  33. Atlanta Braves: Eric Jenkins, CF, West Columbus HS (NC)

Atlanta adds a centerfielder. Eric Jenkins is the top center fielder available.
