Round 7

Chris Ransom follow @DraftUtopia Last Updated: June 28, 2023.

  1. Tampa Bay Lightning: Connor MacPherson, RW, Leamington Flyers (GOJHL)

The Tampa Bay Lightning got this 2023 seventh round pick from the Anaheim Ducks. Tampa Bay kicks off the seventh round with a winger.

Connor MacPherson is a first line right winger on the 2023 GOJHL Champion Leamington Flyers. His twin brother Ryan MacPherson is the first line center on the Leamington Flyers. Connor MacPherson lined up as a first line left winger on one shift and tried to take a face off as the first line center before his twin brother Ryan asked him to move aside to the wing. Connor MacPherson may be versatile enough to play left wing, center, and right wing at the next level if he gets an NHL entry level contract.

The 6-0 176 lb Connor MacPherson had 28 goals, 35 assists, and 63 points, in 43 GOJHL games as an alternate captaiin on the Leamington Flyers in 2022-2023. Connor MacPherson had 20 goals, 14 assists, and 34 points in 22 games during the 2023 GOJHL Playoffs. Connor MacPherson's impact with the Leamington Flyers led to him winning the 2023 GOJHL MVP this past season in the GOJHL.

Connor MacPherson has the skating, versatility, playmaking, passing, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, offensive awareness, and hockey IQ to succeed in the NHL. Connor MacPherson needs to develop a slap shot and improve his defensive awareness.

Connor MacPherson has the skating, versatility, stick handling, playmaking, passing, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, offensive awareness, defensive awareness, and hockey IQ to succeed in the NHL. Connor MacPherson stole the puck on a play in the deciding game of the 2023 GOJHL Championship and scored a goal while demonstrating superb stick handling.

Connor MacPherson will go to the Penticon Vees in the BCHL in 2023. The year after that Connor MacPherson will begin his NCAA journey at New Hampshire in 2024. His twin brother Ryan MacPherson will play with Connor on those teams as well, and Ryan MacPherson is the next player I'm doing a writeup on in my 2023 NHL Mock Draft.

  2. Columbus Blue Jackets: Ryan MacPherson, C, Leamington Flyers (GOJHL)

The 6-0 176 lb Ryan MacPherson had 25 goals, 36 assists, and 61 points in 49 games with the Leamington Flyers in the GOJHL in 2022-2023. Ryan MacPherson had 14 goals, 24 assists, and 38 points in 24 games during the 2023 GOJHL Playoffs. Ryan MacPherson was a first line player on the Leamington Flyers as the first line center being line mates with his twin brother Connor MacPherson.

Ryan MacPherson has the skating, versatility, playmaking, passing, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, offensive awareness, defensive awareness, and hockey IQ to succeed in the NHL. Ryan MacPherson is great at winning faceoffs and checked off just as many boxes as his twin brother Connor MacPherson despite the fact that Connor MacPherson won the 2023 GOJHL MVP.

Ryan MacPherson will go to the Penticon Vees in the BCHL in 2023. The year after that Ryan MacPherson will begin his NCAA journey at New Hampshire in 2024. The MacPherson twins played together on the Leamington Flyers in the GOJHL. These twins will play with each other in the BCHL on the Penticon Vees in 2023 before playing with each other on New Hampshire in the NCAA in 2024.

  3. Chicago Blackhawks: Saige Weinstein, D, Spokane Chiefs (WHL)

The Spokane Chiefs drafted Saige Weinstein in the first round of the 2020 WHL Draft. Saige Weinstein was a first line defenseman who played on the left side complimenting the best defenseman on the Spokane Chiefs this past season.

The 6-0 179 lb Saige Weinstein had 1 goal, 13 assists, 14 points, and a -9 +/- ratio in 59 WHL games in 2021-2022. Saige Weinstein had 0 goals, 0 assists, and 0 point during 4 games in the 2022 WHL Playoffs. Saige Weinstein had 4 goals, 14 assists, 18 points, and a -9 +/- ratio in 57 WHL games in 2022-2023. Saige Weinstein's final game this season was on March 1st during the regular season in the WHL.

Saige Weinstein has the skating, playmaking, passing, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, offensive awareness, defensive awareness, and hockey IQ to succeed in the NHL. Saige Weinstein has the floor of a first line defenseman in the WHL and the ceiling of a first line defenseman in the NHL. He's got to add more muscle and stay healthy next season showing the team that drafts him that durability will not be an issue.

Chicago will not have to sign Saige Weinstein to an entry level contract until 2025. He would probably play on the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL by that point.

  4. San Jose Sharks: Jani Lampanen, G, Keiko-Espoo (Metsis)

The 6-2 176 lb Jani Lampanen had a 2.08 goals against average and a .924 save percentage in 14 games in Metsis in 2021-2022. Jani Lampanen had a 2.35 goals against average and a .902 save percentage in 24 games in Metsis in 2022-2023.

Jani Lampanen helped Keiko-Espoo win the 2023 Metsis league championship which was the first in league history for Keiko-Espoo. Jani Lampanen also had a 31 save shutout against Latvia as the starting goalie for Finland at the IIHF World Championship as the starting goalie for Finland.

San Jose failed to sign their 2021 third round pick Benjamin Gaudreau to an entry level contract after he regressed with the Sarnia Sting in the OHL following the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Jani Lampanen is a goalie you can develop while Mackenzie Blackwood gets a second chance as a starting goalie in San Jose.

  5. Montreal Canadiens: Logan Wormald, LW, Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL)

The 5-10 144 lb Logan Wormald had 22 goals, 22 assists, 44 points, and a +0 +/- ratio in in 2022-2023. Logan Wormald had 0 goals, 0 assists, and 0 points in 4 games during the 2023 WHL Playoffs. Wormald still has 0 points through 7 games in the WHL Playoffs playing three games for the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the 2022 WHL Playoffs before playing 4 games during the 2023 WHL Playoffs.

Logan Wormald has the skating, playmaking, passing, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, offensive awareness, defensive awareness, and hockey IQ to succeed in the NHL. Logan Wormald was the Lethbridge Hurricanes 2020 third round pick in the 2020 WHL Draft and has been a steady player for the Lethbridge Hurricanes. He can develop for two more seasons before Montreal has to sign him.

  6. Florida Panthers: Samuel Urban, G, Sioux City Musketeers (USHL)

The Florida Panthers lose goalie Alex Lyon to Free Agency. Florida still has Sergei Bobrovsky and Spencer Knight their 2019 first round pick before Knight was injured and unable to play during the Panthers Stanley Cup run forcing Alex Lyon to being Florida's backup goalie during their Stanley Cup run. Florida traded Devon Levi their 2020 seventh round pick to Buffalo for Sam Reinhardt, so now Florida gets another goalie to develop here.

The 6-1 183 lb Samuel Urban had a 2.80 goals against average and a .918 save percentage in 4 starts with the Sioux City Musketeers in the USHL. Samuel Urban is from Slovakia nad hasn't committed to a college in the NCAA yet. This means he's probably returning to the Sioux City Musketeers next season before enrolling into a college. Samuel Urban has potential to develop into a backup goalie in the NHL, but he's a massive project. Florida can gamble on a backup goalie this late in the seventh round with two established goalies in Sergei Bobrovsky and Spencer Knight.

  7. Philadelphia Flyers: Magomed Sharaknov, D, UHC Dynamo Moscow (KHL)

The 6-1 201 lb Magomed Sharaknov had 7 goals, 25 assists, and 32 points in the MHL in 2022-2023. Magomed Sharaknov is returning to the MHL next season and still needs to do more if he wants to get promoted to UHC Dyamo Moscow in the KHL.

  8. Washington Capitals: Damian Clara, G, Farjestads BK (Elitserien)

Washington can draft a goalie to groom behind Darcy Kuemper as a long-term project. Damian Clara was born in Brunico, Italy and started in the 2021 IIHF World Championships for Italy as a sixteen year old due to Italy's top two goalies both being ruled out due to Covid-19. Italy faced Canada, USA, Germany, and Latvia with Damian Clara starting for Italy as a sixteen year old due to Italy's starting goalie and backup goalie were two of the fifteen Italian players ineligible for the 2021 IIHF World Championships due to Covid-19.

The 6-6 207 lb Damian Clara had a 2.79 goals against average and a .903 save percentage with the Farjestads BK Under 20 Team in 2022-2023. Damian Clara agreed to be loaned to Brynas IF another highly regarded hockey program in Sweden in 2023. He would go back to Farjestads BK in 2024 with one year of experience in the SHL. If an NHL team drafts Damian Clara that team would have to sign him to an entry level contract by 2025. The Capitals can gamble on Damian Clara in the seventh round.

Damian Clara's three goals are to get drafted by an NHL team, play well enough to sign an entry level contract with the team that drafts him, and to be the starting goalie for Italy in the 2026 Winter Olympics. His favorite goalie to watch is Jake Oettinger of the Dallas Stars.

  9. Detroit Red Wings: Ryan Fine, C, USNTDP (USHL)

The 5-9 183 lb Ryan Fine had 16 goals, 26 assists, and 42 points with the US-Under 18 Team in 2022-2023. Jackson Nevers has an NCAA scholarship to Minnesota which will either begin in 2023 or 2024. This means Jackson Nevers cannot sign his NHL entry level contract until 2026 or 2027 depending on when he enrolls into Minnesota.

  12. Ottawa Senators: Matteo Fabrizi, D, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)

Matteo Fabrizi was the Red Deer Rebels 2020 second round pick in the 2020 WHL Draft. Fabrizi has the traits of a two-way defenseman, but needs to showcase those traits more consistently moving forward. Right now he's a player that I have graded out as a seventh round pick because of this.

The 6-5 238 lb Matteo Fabrizi had 2 goals, 5 assists, 7 points, and a +5 +/- ratio with the Red Deer Rebels in 38 WHL games in 2021-2022. Oliver Tulk had 1 goal, 2 assists, and 3 points in the 2023 WHL Playoffs. The Calgary Hitmen and Calgary Flames play in the same stadium, so Calgary can spend their last pick on a hometown player.

The 5-10 164 lb Ivan Anoshko had 21 goals, 32 assists, and 53 points in the MHL in 2022-2023. He will return to the MHL next season and still hasn't gotten promoted to Dinamo Minsk in the KHL.

Winnipeg drafts one more center for depth. Cooper Conway was an eighteenth round pick in the 2021 USHL Draft. The Green Bay Gamblers took Cooper Conway in the eighteenth round of the 2021 USHL Draft and the crazy thing is Conway did well enough as a late round pick to make the Green Bay Gamblers roster in the USHL.

The 6-0 163 lb Cooper Conway had 46 goals, 1 assists, and 87 points in 31 games at Andover High School with the Andover Huskies in 2022-2023. Cooper Conway only played 6 games in the USHL where he had 0 goals, 0 assists, and 0 points with the Green Bay Gamblers in 2022-2023.

Hunter Mayo was drafted in the second round of the 2020 WHL Draft by the Red Deer Rebels. Hunter Mayo went undrafted in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, but improved enough to warrant a late round selection this past season.

Most of the top German prospects play in DEL. This might be the second year in a row a DEL player goes undrafted, but there is a German goalie in DEL 2 who could get drafted in the late rounds of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft in Nico Pertuch who plays for Eislaufverin Landshut in DEL 2 which is a minor league to DEL in Germany.

The 6-3 198 lb Nico Pertuch had a 3.12 goals against average and a .865 save percentage in 4 games with Eislaufverein Landshut in 2022-2023. 32. Vegas Golden Knights: Tyler Duke, D, Ohio State

The 5-8 179 lb Tyler Duke played two sesaons on the United States National Team Developmental Program before going undrafted in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Tyler Duke had 4 goals, 8 assists, 12 points, and a +9 +/- ratio as a freshman at Ohio State in 2022-2023.

Tyler Duke has the skating, passing playmaking, sniping, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, offensive awareness, defensive awareness, and hockey IQ you want. Tyler Duke is transferring from Ohio State to Michigan and while this offends me as an Ohio State fan, the realist in me understands why he wants to play with his older brother at Michigan. Still, someone has to be Mr. Irrelevant in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft and I'm doing with Tyler Duke because he's too skilled to go undrafted, but at the same time he still transferred from Ohio State to Michigan. Yes, it's just as bad as transferring from Michigan to Ohio State.
