Round 1 Picks 15-27

F.C. Dallas: Josh Penn, F, Indiana
- The 5-10 160 lb Josh Penn had 6 goals, 2 assists, and 14 points in his freshman season at Indiana. He signed with Indiana Eleven in 2020 due to Indiana's soccer season in the Fall being cancelled due to Covid-19. Everyone else is mocking a defender to F.C. Dallas at 15, but I cannot figure out why since they got great starters at left back, center back, and right back along with a good center back for depth. Callum Montgomery and John Nelson their 2019 first round picks are both expected to make the jump form USL to MLS in 2021.
- My thought process is F.C. Dallas will fill that void at right winger that they have by taking Penn hoping he becomes their starting right winger at some point since he lined up as both a right winger and a secondary striker at Indiana. Justin McMaster out of Wake Forest is another candidate could consider here. The bottom line is F.C. Dallas should be verry happy if both Josh Penn and Justin McMaster make it to 15.
Previous Pick: Yoni Sorokin, M, Central Florida
Los Angeles Galaxy: Talen Maples, D, SMU
- Los Angeles grabs a defender here at 16 with the pick they got from the Portland Timbers. The 6-0 188 lb Talen Maples also known as Jon-Talen Maples is versatile enough to play center back or defensive midfielder. He will put his body on the line to protect a soccer ball. Maples is a difference maker on the back line and he will make a goalies job easier.
Previous Pick: CC Uche, D, Ohio State
New York City F.C.: Justin Malou, D, Clemson
- The 5-11 175 lb Justin Malou played left back at Clemson for his first three seasons. He made the transition to center back in 2020. He's also versatile enough to play right back. You can line Malou up anywhere on defense. He needs to be more aggressive when opponents create scoring chances. Malou is reliable though since he got promoted to team captain on Clemson in 2020. New York City F.C. has needed to load up on defense for years in the MLS Super Draft ever since they became an expansion team back in 2015. Getting Malou gives their back line a building block for the future.
Previous Pick: Talen Maples, D, SMU
Toronto F.C.: Justin McMaster, F, Wake Forest
- Toronto grabs a right winger here. The 5-9 165 lb Justin McMaster may have the best kicking power and kicking accuracy of any prospect I've seen on tape in this draft despite receiving limited minutes at Wake Forest. If he didn't tear his ACL in 2019, he'd probably be in my top 10. I strongly considered McMaster at 15 when F.C. Dallas was on the clock. Justin McMaster is an excellent addition for any team drafting in the top twenty.
Previous Pick: Brandon Hackenberg, D, Penn State
Orlando City S.C.: Louis Perez, M, Central Florida
- Orlando City S.C. goes with the best player on the board at 19. The 5-11 182 lb Louis Perez had 4 goals, 11 assists, and 19 points in 2019. His playmaking along with the consistent scoring of Cal Jennings were two reasons why Central Florida dominated in 2019. You could argue Perez is a top 15 player, but the reason Perez is sliding in mocks is due to his international status. I don't think Orlando City S.C. is going to pass on this local prospect at 19.
Previous Pick: Jamil Roberts, M, Marshall
Nashville S.C.: Derek Dodson, F, Georgetown
- Nashville S.C. gets Derek Dodson here. The 6-0 162 lb Derek Dodson had 11 goals, 8 assists, and 30 points in 2019. He was Georgetown's striker on their 2019 team that won the NCAA College Cup.
Previous Pick: Kimarni Smith, F, Clemson
Colorado Rapids: David Egbo, F, Akron
- Colorado gets the best player on their board at 21. There are reports that Colorado may move striker Andre Shinyashiki from forward to midfielder. David Egbo is the best forward on the board and I've seen him mocked as high as sixth overall to the Colorado Rapids. The 6-1 185 lb David Egbo had 13 goals, 5 assists, and 31 points in his sophomore year in 2018 when he led Akron to the 2018 College Cup Final where Maryland defeated Akron. David Egbo also led Akron with 7 goals, 4 assists, and 18 points in 2019.
Previous Pick: Derek Dodson, F, Georgetown
Orlando City S.C.: Logan Panchot, D, Stanford
- Orlando City S.C. gets a right back here. The 5-10 160 lb Logan Panchot started all 22 games at right back when Stanford won the College Cup in 2017 when they three peated. Panchot played defensive midfielder in 2018 after Tomas Hilliard-Arce got drafted second overall. He moved back to right back in 2019 and had more success there. Orlando City S.C. grabs Panchot here hoping he solves their problems on the back line.
Previous Pick: Ben Di Rosa, D, Maryland
Vancouver Whitecaps: Freddy Kleemann, D, Washington
- The 6-4 194 lb Freddy Kleemann played center back at Washington complimenting Ethan Bartlow. Freddy Kleemann is taller and just as lethal when it comes to defending on the back line as Bartlow despite being not as offensively gifted as Bartlow. Freddy Kleemann is considered the top junior redshirt with a degree in this years draft which is why I see him sneaking into the back half of the first round.
Previous Pick: Alex Welch, M, Northern Illinois
New England Revoultion: Colin Shutler, G, Virginia
- New England gets the best player on their board at 24. The 6-1 185 lb Colin Shutler had a 0.52 goals against average in 2019 which was best in the NCAA. His .827 save percentage, 63 saves, and 14 shutouts, while playing every minute in all 24 games with the Virginia Cavaliers certainly stood out. Shutler only had 2 shutouts in 2020, but he re-unites with his Virginia teammate Henry Kessler. I can see Shutler recapturing his 2019 form in New England.
Previous Pick: Jacob Montes, M, Georgetown
Minnesota United F.C.: Luther Archimede, F, Syracuse
- Minnesota goes with the best player on the board at 25. The 6-2 170 lb Luther Archimede is 21-years-old. He only has two years of experience at the NCAA level as he played College overseas his first two seasons before transferring to Syracuse.
Inter Miami C.F.: Aedan Stanley, D, Duke
- Inter Miami C.F. gets a left back to replace Mikey Ambrose here. Aedan Stanley went from the Timbers USL team to signing a contract with Sporting Kansas City four days ago. Stanley had a lackluster game when I saw him in person against Pittsburgh back in 2019. He really grew in the USL this year. If a team drafts him, they will have to start him or pay Stanley what he wants to ride the bench because I doubt he leaves Sporting Kansas City unless he gets a starting job or an offer he wants elsewhere. Inter Miami C.F. needs a left back and they are one team that can give Stanley what he wants without reaching for him in the first round.
Previous Pick: Jonas Fjeldberg, M, Dayton
Columbus Crew S.C.: Ben Di Rosa, D, Maryland
- Columbus Crew S.C. gets a player who can be effective. The 5-10 171 lb Ben Di Rosa is a three year starter at right back for Maryland. He even started at right back as a sophomore on that Maryland team that was loaded which won the 2018 College Cup over Akron. Getting Ben Di Rosa is big for Columbus as they open up a brand new stadium in 2021.
Previous Pick: Spencer Glass, M, Indiana
