Jose Fernandez Back And Better Than Ever

Posted By: Emily Rosario on 8/8/2015

Jose Fernandez has been phenomenal since returning as the Marlins ace and #1 starter in their rotation despite having a no decision on Friday against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. Fernandez got his seventh start in 2015 since being placed on the Marlins disabled list for 13 months.

Fernandez made his debut on July, 2, 2015 against the San Francisco Giants where he out pitched Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants to go to 1-0 on the season. Fernandez had 6 strikeouts against the Giants before posting 9 strikeouts against the Cincinnati Reds in 7 innings a week later putting him at 2-0.

Following the MLB All Star Game Fernandez had his first no decision of the season against the Phillies. He responded with his third win of the season against the Arizona Diamondbacks where he posted 11 strikeouts in 7 innings.

Jose Fernandez got two more wins against the Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres following his third victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Fernandez is now 5-0 with 53 strikeouts, and 10 walks with 43 innings pitched in those seven starts following tonight's contest against the Braves.

That is something the Miami Marlins desperately need right now. The Marlins ranked 11th in team ERA in the National League heading into July and fourth among National League East teams in their division. Since Fernandez returned the Marlins now rank 8th in the National League in team ERA and are now 3rd among NL East teams in Team ERA.

You cannot really blame the pitching for the Miami Marlins as Fernandez has been phenomenal since returning to the mound. The Miami Marlins have scored fewer runs than any team in the MLB at this point. The Marlins' 391 runs scored is the fewest in the entire MLB.

Jose Fernandez next start has not been announced yet. It is safe to say that the Miami Marlins will start Fernandez again next Friday at Busch Stadium when the Marlins travel to face the St. Louis Cardinals. The Marlins have already set their rotation for the remaining two games against the Atlanta Braves along with their 3 starters for the 3 game home series versus the Boston Red Sox. Fernandez is not pitching in any of the next five games which is why there is a strong chance Fernandez faces the Cardinals next Friday.

Fernandez will make a very strong case for being the 2015 MLB Comeback player of the year if he can defeat the 70-39 St. Louis Cardinals on the road since the Cardinals have the best record in the entire MLB right now. For now Marlins fans just need to be greatful that Fernandez is off to such a strong start after missing 13 months of baseball.
