The Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals exactly sixteen years after winning the 2008 NBA Finals. Boston dominated this series for the most part outside of game 4 where Dallas won it. The Boston Celtics won all three NBA Finals games at TD Garden.
Everyone in Boston's starting five stepped up except for center Al Horford who filled in for Kristaps Porzingis who had 9 points. Point guard Jrue Holliday had 15 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 block in game 5 of the 2024 NBA Finals dominating defensively against Dallas Mavericks point guard and former Boston Celtic Kyrie Irving. Shooting guard Derrick White had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, and 1 block. Small forward Jaylen Brown had 21 poits, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals in game 5. Jayson Tatum had 31 points, 11 assists, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals in game 5.
I figured Jayson Tatum would win 2024 NBA Finals MVP. That honor went to Jaylen Brown who said he and Tatum won this together that it's our trophy. The unselfishness of the Boston Celtics is what amazes me.
Boston has everyone under contract next year. Milwaukee, Golden State, and Denver were all in the same situation as the Boston Celtics earlier this decade and all of those teams failed to repeat before their Championship windows closed.
Boston's in a unique spot with Holliday, White, Brown, Tatum, and Porzingis all under contract next year. Milwaukee, Indiana, Cleveland, Atlanta, Orlando, and the New York Knicks if they get a center could all emerge as challengers. Dallas doesn't have the forwards to compliment Luka and Kyrie and Denver still has their starting five for one more year. Minnesota does as well. The Los Angeles Lakers might get aggressive this offseason before LeBron retires. There's a bunch of teams with good starting fives like Detroit, Charlotte, Portland, and San Antonio that have the pieces, but need to stay healthy next season. The 2024 NBA Offseason will take place soon and I'm currently working on my 2024 NBA Mock Draft.
