Alex Nylander Is The Top Prospect From Sweden In The 2016 NHL Entry Draft

Posted By: Carmack Lloyd on 1/18/2016

My name is Carmack Lloyd and I'll be covering CHL content in different leagues like the OHL, QMJHL, or WHL for the NHL Draft at Draft Utopia. In my first piece I compared OHL defensemen Jakob Chychrun and Sean Day. Then I talked about Pierre-Luc Dubois. After that, I mentioned Kale Clauge as the top defenseman on the Brandon Wheat Kings. Today I'm gonna mention why the Mississauga Steelheads have the top prospect that hails from Sweden. Mellisa Scanladi will cover some NHL Draft pieces for Sweden and Finland prospects in the Elitserien and SM Liiga leagues at some point, but with Nylander playing in the OHL, I'll be doing the writeup on Alex Nylander.

Alex Nylander is the little brother of William Nylander who the Toronto Maple Leafs took eighth overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Nylander is having a very strong 2015-2016 season with the Mississauga Steelheads.

In 36 OHL games, Alex Nylander has 23 goals, 28 assists, and 51 points in his first season in the Ontario Hockey League after previously playing for A.I.K. in the Elitserien league. A lot of NHL Draft boards have Nylander at 6 or 7. I've even seen some NHL Mock Drafts put Alex Nylander in their top 5 at #4 overall.

Alex Nylander is on pace to get drafted ahead of his older brother in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. If the Toronto Maple Leafs can develop a winning streak near the end of the season they may miss out on a top prospect and end up settling for Alex Nylander hoping a reunion with his older brother will make both players better.

Unlike, William Nylander who was a center with the versatility to play left wing or right wing, Alex Nylander is pure winger. Alex Nylander has the versatility to play both left wing and right wing.

NHL scouts rave about Alex Nylander's offensive awareness. In addition to being a playmaker, he also has exceptional slap shot power and slap shot accuracy. His wrist shot power and wrist shot accuracy is deadly as well. Nylander has all the intangibles that NHL scouts covet, and I'd rank him right behind Pierre-Luc Dubois.

I may have more updates on Mississauga Steelheads players at some point in the near future. For now read up on the emerging Alex Nylander.
