My name is Carmack Lloyd and I'll be covering CHL content in different leagues like the OHL, QMJHL, or WHL for the NHL Draft at Draft Utopia. Every month you'll hear my unique insight on something in the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, or the Western Hockey League.
Olli Juolevi impressed in the 2016 OHL Playoffs. He helped the London Knights win the OHL with his stellar defense. He's done enough on tape to surpass Jakob Chychrun as the top defenseman in the 2016 NHL Draft.
Juolevi had 9 goals, 33 assists, 42 points, and a +38 +/- ratio on defense during the regular season. In 18 OHL Playoff games he had 3 goals, 11 assists, 14 points, and a +15 +/- ratio. Juolevi has been superb. Through 3 games of the 2016 Memorial Cup the London Knights have scored 20 goals and only allowed 5. London has averaged at least 3 goals a game and allowed just under 2 goals per game. This is mainly due to Juolevi who reminds me of Dallas Stars defenseman John Klingberg even though a lot of NHL Scouts are comparing him to Olli Maata.
Edmonton and Vancouver both sent their scouts to the 2016 Memorial Cup for a better look at both Olli Juolevi and his teammate Matthew Tkachuk of the London Knights.
Juolevi should be the top defenseman drafted. I think him and Jakob Chychrun both need one more year in the OHL before making the jump to the NHL. At the same time, I could see both Juolevi and Chychrun on NHL teams right away as rookies.
How do you feel about Juolevi and should he get drafted ahead of Chychrun. Let us know in the comments page below.
I may have more updates on London Knights players at some point in the near future. For now Olli Juolevi has to be the top prospect from the London Knights as we enter the home stretch for assessing players in the 2016 NHL Draft.
