Erie Bayhawks: Can They Contend For A Championship In 2014-2015
The Erie Bayhawks will be one of the more exciting teams to watch in the NBA D League In 2014-2015. The transactions and power play moves the Bayhawks made gave this roster the talent to contend.
Point guard Peyton Siva led Louisville to a 2013 NCAA Mens Basketball Championship when he was point guard of the Louisville Cardinal. Then the Detroit Pistons drafted him 56th overall in 2013. He only averaged 2.3 points per game with the Pistons as a backup point guard to Brandon Jennings. In 10 games in the NBA D League, Siva average 12.9 points per game. Siva was part of the 2014 Fort Wayne Mad Ants team that won the NBA D League.
The Orlando Magic signed him hoping they would get a starter at point guard because the team wanted to save cap space. That plan backfired and now Siva will start in the NBA D League which seems to be his natural role.
Starting at shooting guard will be Seth Curry. The former Duke Blue Devil has the size of a point guard and the skill set of a shooting guard. Seth Curry guided the Santa Cruz Warriors to the 2014 NBA D League Finals where the Warriors lost to the Mad Ants. Curry will play shooting guard next to Siva to form arguably the best tandem of guards in the NBA D League.
Drew Crawford is a 6-5 player with the offense of a shooting guard and the defense of a power forward. He will likely play the 3 at small forward when you consider he can play shooting guard, small forward, or power forward. He is versatile, can pass the ball, play defense, and has excellent agility plus some deadly speed. Crawford scored close to 2,000 career points at Northewestern. That makes him a pretty effective starter when you see everything he can do.
Power forward Kadeem Batts played over 100 games at Providence and can average 10 points per game. He is 6-9 and has the ideal size for a starting power forward. I popped in some of Batts tape, and one thing he does real well is block shots. He is not a first class rebounder, but Batts can get you 5 to 8 rebounds per game. He plays outstanding defense and blocks shots effectively on a consistent basis.
Center Jeremy Tyler was a highly touted 6-10 250 lb center from Tokyo. The Bayhawks gave up their first round pick in the 2014 NBA D League Draft to acquire the rights to Tyler. Even if Tyler flops, the Jayhawks spent two second-round picks on centers for depth. Daniel Coursey is a 6-10 220 lb center that played at Mercer last season. He averaged 10 points per game, and can make a difference as a sixth man at the power forward or center position. You also added John Bohannon a 6-11 210 lb center from UTEP as well.
Peyton Siva and Seth Curry have decent backups as well with Kevin Anderson a point guard out of Richmond along with Ohio State shooting guard Lenzell Smith Jr., who succeeded shooting guard William Bufford at Ohio State. Besides a backup small forward for depth, you are set everywhere on both sides of the floor.
There is no question that the Erie Jayhawks have the talent to win. How will newly hired head coach Bill Peterson deal with all this talent? Peterson was an assistant head coach at Colorado State for 7 years before being the assistant head coach to the Milwaukee Bucks for three seasons. Before being an assistant coach and college and the pros, he was the head scout for the Dallas Mavericks from 1998-2000. It was Peterson that discovered the raw talent that is Dirk Nowitzki and sold Nowitzki on then Mavs head coach Don Nelson who knew he wanted to pair Nowitzki and Steve Nash up in Dallas.
Peterson brought the rest of the Bucks assistant coaches to aid him in Erie. There is enough talent to win it all. This season will come down to whether a bunch of former Milwaukee Bucks assistant coaches can come together and mold a roster with a lot of talent for a minor league Basketball team by developing team chemistry and putting a good group of guys together. This is Petersons first gig as a head coach, so he could do either really good or really bad. It will be fun to see what Coach Peterson does with the Bayhawks basketball team.
