Arizona Coyotes 2017 Season Preview

Oliver Ekman-Larsson anchors the Arizona Coyotes defense. The Coyotes must do much better in 2017-2018.

Arizona Coyotes Forwards Review: The Arizona Coyotes have a lot of forwards they drafted from 2013 and beyond on their NHL roster. After numerous years of developing first round picks, it appears the Coyotes finally have the group of forwards they want. Things could fall apart though if Dylan Strome is not playing on the second line. There is speculation that Strome may play in the AHL until he gets up to 200 lbs and if that's the case the Coyotes will have problems this season on offense.

In 2016-2017, the Arizona Coyotes ranked 27th out of 30 teams in goals scored and 26th out of 30 teams on the power play. These numbers have to improve in 2017-2018 with the league expanding to 31 teams.

Arizona Coyotes Defensemen Review: The Arizona Coyotes have a very good defense when healthy. Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Jakob Chychurn are the only two-way defenders on this roster. Chychurn had knee surgery so he may be out for an extended period of time which really could hurt the Coyotes chances of making a run towards the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs this year.

Arizona finished 28th in goals allowed and 27th in penalty killing. Arizona will allow less goals, but the penalty killing will still be an issue this season with the Coyotes.

Arizona Coyotes Goaltender Review: Arizona is making a backup goalie a starting goalie. I feel like this is a short-term option until Adin Hill develops.

Arizona Coyotes Prospect Pool: Arizona has left winger Christian Fischer who has the versatility to play all 3 forward roles in the AHL. They also have Adil Hill, Brendan Warren at left wing, and Jense Looke at right wing as AHL prospects even though a vast majority of their prospects are in the NHL now.

Arizona Coyotes 2017-2018 Prediction

Arizona has most of the pieces you want for them to be a contender long-term. Chychurn's injury, Dylan Strome possibly not making the roster until he gets up to 200 lbs, and the uncertainty of their goalie situation have me thinking this team is another year away from contending. I expect the Coyotes to be a bottom 5 team once again in 2017-2018.
